  27. Welcome to misc.kids, the newsgroup for parents, soon-to-be
  28. parents, and other people interested in children.  In this group, 
  29. we discuss issues relevant to pregnancy and child rearing, solicit 
  30. advice from other netters on a host of parenting concerns, 
  31. and generally seek and provide support and encouragement with 
  32. respect to raising kids.  This is a group intended for parents of 
  33. children of *all* ages, though questions about babies and younger 
  34. children seem to predominate.  
  35.  
  36. This document introduces new readers both to the preferred
  37. etiquette for misc.kids and to a service we have devised
  38. in this group:  a compilation of files of Frequently Asked
  39. Questions (FAQ).
  40.  
  41.         *** Etiquette Guidelines ***
  42.  
  43. Most of the guidelines here are the same as in
  44. news.announce.newusers.  In fact, it is *strongly* recommended that
  45. you read the etiquette guidelines in news.announce.newusers (or in
  46. any other introductory text on news readers) before you post any
  47. articles.
  48.  
  49. o  Please be very careful when asking for or giving medical advice.
  50.    It is one thing to state what your experience with X might have
  51.    been, and another thing entirely to dispense medical advice to
  52.    complete strangers.  If you are asking for medical advice, please
  53.    consider the source, and consult with a trusted medical
  54.    professional before using any advice you obtain from the net.
  55.  
  56. o  Please respond via e-mail whenever possible; if the
  57.    original poster was soliciting advice/information, s/he should
  58.    post a summary to the net.  This helps cut down on net traffic.
  59.  
  60. o  Please read all follow-ups before posting one of your own;
  61.    in many cases, someone else has already covered the same point.
  62.  
  63. o  Please limit the amount of material included from previous
  64.    postings as much as possible, and try to be concise.  Certainly,
  65.    .signatures should be excised.  Remember that most of the audience 
  66.    for misc.kids are busy parents.  However, please make sure you 
  67.    include enough of the original article so as to make your follow-up 
  68.    sensible.  (For example, follow-ups such as "I totally agree!" with 
  69.    no material included from the previous article make no sense at all, 
  70.    due to the nature of news readers.  And of course, if *ALL* that
  71.    you want to say is "I totally agree!", that should certainly be
  72.    handled via private e-mail)
  73.  
  74. o  Please watch your attributions carefully; avoid misquotes and 
  75.    misconstructions.  
  76.  
  77. o  Please avoid cross-postings to other newsgroups unless you are
  78.    absolutely sure there is relevance to the other group(s).  There
  79.    is usually nothing that will spark a flame war faster than to 
  80.    cross-post an article to groups such as soc.men, soc.women, or 
  81.    alt.sex.  If you feel you must cross-post or respond to
  82.    a cross-posting, please delete misc.kids from the Newsgroups
  83.    line as soon as the relevance to this newsgroup disappears.

  85. o  Please check your Subject line carefully!  If you are starting a
  86.    new thread, do not use the standard follow-up command.  (If you
  87.    aren't sure about how to post a new article, read some help
  88.    articles, or read news.announce.newusers (strongly recommended
  89.    reading for any new netter anyway).)  Similarly, if you want folks
  90.    to read your article, and especially, if you want people to offer
  91.    advice/comments, tailor your Subject line accordingly.  This is a
  92.    very busy newsgroup, and Subject lines that are vague might not
  93.    catch the eye of the very people who might have something to
  94.    offer.  For example, if you have questions about breastfeeding 
  95.    and sibling rivalry, please take the time to write two separate 
  96.    articles with appropriate Subject lines.
  97.  
  98. o  Please remember that this newsgroup has a world-wide readership.
  99.    With that in mind, please note the following:  First, readers
  100.    whose primary language is not English might not know what a
  101.    VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Caesarian) is, or what Tylenol is.  
  102.    (There is an FAQ file entitled "Acronyms" -- please check the
  103.    FAQ File Index for instructions on how to request that file.)
  104.    Second, check your Distribution line before posting an article.  
  105.    If you are looking for an occasional babysitter in Idaho, you're 
  106.    unlikely to find interested readers in New Zealand!  Third, please 
  107.    be understanding and patient with spelling or style errors made by 
  108.    people who are obviously posting from a non-English speaking country.  
  109.    (For that matter, spelling and/or grammatical errors should not be 
  110.    pointed out via the newsgroup, but through private e-mail if you feel 
  111.    it is absolutely necessary to show someone the error of their
  112.    ways.)

  114. o  Before posting an article to misc.kids, please be sure it
  115.    is actually relevant to parenting or children.  Misc.kids can
  116.    be a great source of support, but it is not the only newsgroup
  117.    on Usenet.  Thus, queries regarding the best dishwasher to get
  118.    would be entirely inappropriate for this newsgroup.
  119.    
  120. o  While there is a newsgroup (alt.kids-talk) for non-adults to
  121.    participate in, comments from children and teens are very welcome
  122.    in this newsgroup.
  123.  
  124. o  Please refrain from name-calling, tantrums or other hysterics--
  125.    we get enough of that from our children :-).

  129. If you are interested in any of the following topics, please
  130. e-mail the contact person directly, who will then
  131. send you a copy of the file.  Please be specific when requesting
  132. files, as some folks maintain more than one FAQ file.  If you would like 
  133. to add something to the files listed, please also do so via e-mail,
  134. and indicate that you would like your comments added to the
  135. FAQ file.  Please read the instructions carefully.  If a notation
  136. follows the person's e-mail address, e.g. (Subject "send toys"),
  137. the subject line should read "send toys", *WITHOUT* the quotation
  138. marks, of course.  Such files are sent out automatically, and if you
  139. don't put the correct subject line in your e-mail, it will not be
  140. processed as quickly.  Also, please do *not* request FAQ files using
  141. an anonymous address--files will most likely bounce or get truncated
  142. because of the automatic stripping of the headers by the anonymous
  143. mail server.

  145. If you ask for an FAQ file and don't get it within a week, it
  146. may have bounced.  When you ask again, please be sure to include your
  147. e-mail address in the body of your request, in case 'reply' doesn't
  148. work.  ("Rec." = "Recommendations")  Please also keep in mind that
  149. some of the files are quite long, which might confuse/bollux some 
  150. mailers.
