FileT&C is an useful application for changing file type and/or creator…
It's very useful for normal desktop usage, but is really cool when works, fine, fast and in background, with a lot of files. Also it can scan, quickly, disks and folders looking for files to treat...
FileT&C is Internet Config aware and has a couple of options to change, according to name extension, following the Internet Config's File Mapping setting.
FileT&C has some useful hot keys for changing, on the fly skipping the "Request Dialog", by using the preferred type and/or creator set in the preferences. You can also instruct it to ignore during its performance, some kind of files or to treat only some other specific types.
FileT&C is Macintosh Drag and Drop aware and requires at least System 7 to run.
Open items.
You can open disks, folders, files by Drag&Drop onto FileT&C desktop icon, by selecting them through "File menu" or by dragging theirs icons on FileT&C "Drag Window" (shown below).
Setting Dialog.
After dragging on one file, the "Setting Dialog" appears:
The texts displayed are the current Type and Creator of file dropped. The "Choose" buttons copies type or creator from another file. The "Both" button copies type and creator from another file. The "Cancel" button quits without perform any change. The "OK" button sets type and creator...
If you want to leave type or creator untouched simply set one of two checkboxes (both checkboxes checked="Cancel").
After dragging on folders, disks or more than one file, the same window appears, but Type and Creator displayed are those you have set in the preferences (see below). The text displayed says: "Your preferred Type/Creator" instead than "Current Type & Creator".
Note: if you're using the "Use only Internet Config" feature (see preferences), the "Setting Dialog" never appears.
After you have pressed the "OK" button and while FileT&C id working, the window below (the "Info Window") returns some informations:
Preferences.
The "Preferences Dialog" is reachable through "File menu":
The buttons are auto-explaining, I think...
The preferred types will be shown in the "Setting Dialog" when you drag on more than one file, besides FileT&C uses they when you drag on its icon one or more file, holding down an HotKey (see below)…
In the "Preferences Dialog" you can set up to four file type (just in the "Skip files of type" area), if FileT&C, while is running, finds a file having type matching one type you have set, then lets this file untouched. You can also set up to four further file type (in the "Treat only files of type" area), if FileT&C, while is running, finds a file having type matching one of four type you have set, then change it, contrariwise lets it untouched.
If both "Skip" and "Treat only " features are active, "Skip" has the priority, so if you tell FileT&C to skip and treat the same type then it lets the file untouched.
Note: in both "Skip files of type" and "Treat only files of type" areas, you may find a checkbox to the left of each of the 8 boxes for the types. The way to use this feature is:
◊ type the four letter code for the filetype (or choose a file type by the button to the left of the checkbox);
◊ check the checkbox (using the mouse).
If you don't check the checkbox then the typed code is not used by FileT&C. In fact, if you close the dialog (by pressing the "OK" button) and then re-open it, then the four-letter code that you have just entered (but forgot to check the checkbox) is not there! It has disappeared! So, I hope you understand because the checkbox is there: simply for security confirmation. Furthermore if you check the checkbox but don't insert some text in the related field, when you re-open the "Preferences Dialog" the checkbox will be un-checked.
Are you perplexed about "Skip files of type" and "Treat only files of type" features? If you don't perceive theirs sense, simply don't activate them. When you need them you will understand them!
Internet Config.
Through the "Preferences Dialog" you can activate a cooperation with Internet Config (if available). When you open Internet Config (you may use the FileT&C "Internet menu" to open it) you find this button:
by pressing "File Mappings" button the "File Mappings" window appears:
from Internet Config documentation:
"The File Mappings window lets you view and edit the table that is used to set the Macintosh file type and creator of incoming files based on their extension. If you don't understand this window then please don't worry. We've done our best to set up appropriate defaults. If you have any problems with file transfers, then resetting to factory defaults will probably help."
Well, in fact File Mappings is an useful, customizable, database of types, creators and name exensions that FileT&C may use with benefit:
◊ If you check "Try Internet Config" checkbox then FileT&C attempts first to change type and/or creator by using Internet Config 's File Mappings, if fails then changes by using your setting. This is an optimal option.
◊ If you check "Use only Internet Config" checkbox then FileT&C attempts to change type and creator by using Internet Config 's File Mappings, if fails then ignores your setting and, consequently, the file currently examinated. This option is useful, for example, to check a folder containig the last downoalded files.
Note: even if you're using Internet Config 's File Mappings, FileT&C considers always "Skip files of type" and "Treat only files of type" (if active).
Hot Keys.
FileT&C has some useful Hot Keys. When you're using these keys FileT&C skips always the "Setting Dialog" and shows immediately the "Info Window", making its job:
<command> = if you hold down this key then FileT&C changes only the type, by using the preferred type or, if suitable and if you've set "Try Internet Config", by using File Mappings.
<option> = the same of above, but concerning the creator.
<command+option> = the same of above, but concerning both creator and type.
Note: if "Use only Internet Config" feature is active then FileT&C ignores Hot Keys.
Menus.
You may perform any action of above by using the "Open" menuitem inside the "File Menu". You can also use Hot Keys, while you're selecting a file.
From "Internet Menu" you can open Internet Config , send me e-mails, visit my web pages or copy my addresses.
More.
While FileT&C is the foreground application, you can press escape or command-period to exit during its performance. Instead if FileT&C is the background application you can use only escape key to stop its job.
When FileT&C completes its job and if it's in background, then attempts to call back your attention, to show its statistics, by a simple notification procedure. If you does nothing or are working with another application, after a brief waiting time (about 30 seconds), it quits.

And don't forget to register your copy of FileT&C. Remember that a shareware author should be supported. If you don’t pay for shareware software today, you will pay much more tomorrow for exactly the same features (but enclosed in a 'nice' commercial box).
