- o What is ScreenLight ?
-
- ScreenLight is an application which runs under System 7. It is a simple engine
- for creative ScreenSaver graphics aimed particularly at the PowerPC.
-
- To run on the PowerPC so well, ScreenLight uses instructions written specifically
- for the PowerPC processor. Most modules also use PowerPC instructions, called
- 'native code'. ScreenLight graphics will run very well on Power Macintoshes.
-
-
- o What Kind of Macintosh Do I Need to Run ScreenLight ?
-
- ScreenLight will run on any Macintosh running System 7, and is capable of
- Color QuickDraw - that is if your Macintosh is any model other than 128, 512,
- Mac SE, MacXL, Portable or PowerBook 100, you can run ScreenLight.
-
- ScreenLight is designed to run best on a IIci, Quadra or PowerPC.
-
-
- o Can I Run on my Black&White Monitor ?
-
- ScreenLight is designed to support Black&White very well. Most modules
- understand Black&White settings of a color monitor, and a true monochrome
- (meaning 'one color') monitor. Try it and see!
-
-
- o How Do I Install ScreenLight ?
-
- There are no special requirements for installing ScreenLight.
-
- Simply drag a copy of the ScreenLight application from the Master Disk onto
- your Hard Disk. The application can be anywhere on the Hard Disk, or on a floppy.
- Make sure to copy the folder named 'ScreenSavers' along with the application.
-
- ScreenLight is not copy-protected.
-
- If you want ScreenLight to start up when your machine starts, you must make an
- alias to the application and put it in the 'StartUp Items' folder in the
- System Folder.
-
- To Make an Alias of ScreenLight for Automatic ScreenSaving:
-
- 1) Drag the ScreenLight Application and folder ScreenSavers onto your
- Macintosh Hard Disk.
-
- 2) Select the ScreenLight application.
-
- 3) Select 'Make Alias' from your File Menu.
-
- 4) Open your System Folder. Find the folder named 'Startup Items'
-
- 5) Drag the File named 'ScreenLight Alias' into 'Startup Items'.
-
- 6) The next time you start your Macintosh, ScreenLight will open automatically.
-
-
- o How Much Memory will ScreenLight use ?
-
- ScreenLight is designed to use very little hard-disk space and RAM.
-
- ScreenLight will use only a minimum amount of memory an application can use
- under System 7, set by default to 384k on a 68k Macintosh, or in this case
- 444k on a Power Macintosh.
-
-
- o How Do I use the ScreenLight Application ?
-
- In ScreenLight, there are several controls. You can choose a Module by
- clicking on one of the available Module Icons in the main window.
-
- You can hide the application by clicking on the Hide button the upper
- right hand corner of the window, just below the Preferences button.
-
- You can show the About Box by clicking on the About Icon in the Title
- area of the main window.
-
- The Preview window is always present. If you do not wish to see the
- Preview window while you are working, click on the Hide button, or
- select 'Hide ScreenLight' under the menu in the upper right hand
- corner of your Macintosh menu bar.
-
- In the Preferences window, you can set the number of minutes until
- ScreenSaving, the HotSpot and NeverSpot (places to put the mouse
- to cause the ScreenSaver to work immediately, or never), set the
- kind of actions which will WakeUp ScreenSaving, and set a
- Password on WakeUp (when the ScreenSaving is done).
-
- Note that the Password protection in ScreenLight is NOT meant to
- replace a security package. For strong password protection of
- your Macintosh, consider a commercial security package such as
- DiskLock by Symantec.
-
-
- o How Does ScreenSaving Work ?
-
- ScreenSaving is available only while the ScreenLight application is
- running. If you quit ScreenLight, ScreenSaving will no longer be active.
-
- If you are running other ScreenSavers, try turning them off before using
- ScreenLight. This is not required, but otherwise you may get unexpected
- results !
-
- If you have an EnergyStar Monitor and one of the EnergyStar control panels
- installed, you may see your monitor 'sleep' after a specified amount of
- time. This is completely compatible with ScreenLight.
-
- A ScreenSaver does what is says, it prevents damage to the monitor by
- burning of the phosphers in spots where pixels are ususally bright. Turning
- the monitor off when not in use, or by using an EnergyStar monitor will
- also save the monitor's phospher.
-
- Some estimates are that a completely black ScreenSaver will only save
- about 23% of the monitors power consumption. EnergyStar monitors save
- 90-100% of the power consumption while 'sleeping. So why use
- a ScreenSaver ? Because ScreenSavers are fun, easy and creative!
-
-
- o Will Other Programs Run in the Background while ScreenLight is running ?
-
- Yes. ScreenLight follows the Macintosh Way for cooperative multitasking.
- ScreenLight does not play tricks on other programs to prevent them from
- running in the background. You will find that Network Connections, File
- Servers, EMail, Modem Transfers, AppleScript, Finder Copies, Background
- Printing and other Macintosh bakground processing will run correctly
- using ScreenLight.
