FetchNews is the result of a one day effort on my part. It is as minimal as I could make it. Its no use to me, since I have a direct connection anyway, and besides, I have no room on my Hard Disk for news.
FetchNews downloads news from an NNTP server into the demo folder for use with NewsWatcher in demo mode. To use it, place the FetchNews application and the FetchNews Data file in the same folder with NewsWatcher, open the FetchNews Data file with ResEdit (I did say minimal, and one day effort, didn't I?), and edit the STR# resource there. The first item should be the name of your server (eg server.your.domain), and the rest should be patterns of news groups you want to download (eg aus.mac, comp.sys.mac.* (*'s are only allowed at the end of the name)). Close FetchNews Data, and quit ResEdit. Launch FetchNews, and wait. With a lot of luck, it will download your news into the Demo folder (which it will create). I've tested this program ONCE, it worked ONCE, so if it doesn't work, don't be suprised, just tell me and maybe I'll put in the effort to make it work for you (probably, I'm a nice guy :-).
FetchNews should work in System 6 or 7, with MacTCP 1.1 or later.
