- Subject: Index & full-text archive of these lists
-
- As I mentioned now and then, here and there, I've put together an
- World-Wide Web archive of a number of mailing lists accessible via a
- hierarchical menu system. My system automatically converts the text of the
- message to HTML, including making HREFs live. The conversion doesn't deal
- very well with detecting formatted text and it interprets all HTML it finds
- in the text, since its presence can be ambiguous. Messages are somewhat
- threaded -- there are pointers to replies in each parent message.
-
- The newest addition to this system is a full-text engine for the archived
- messages. I'm using AppleSearch via a beta of Chuck Shotten's
- AppleWebSearch.cgi, through MacHTTP. The archives are files that contain
- complete threads with internal links.
-
- This whole system is experimental, so I can't promise it'll always work
- just as you expect, but it's been fairly stable for several weeks, so I'm
- comfortable with this informal announcement. You'll find a few menus that
- might not work exactly as advertised and there are things that are under
- construction. What you can't see is the system I'm building for creating
- and maintaining the hierarchical menu system.
-
- Enjoy! Feedback, bug reports, suggestions, etc. are welcome. Please e-mail me.

- Did you notice that the trash can on Novel volume (3.12) is named "Network Trash
- Folder" which contains folders "Trash Can #1", "Trash Can #2" etc. and also the
- "Trash Can Usage Map" while pure Mac volume contains only the folder "trash".

- Thanks for the responses. (Yea! I finally got some!) There were some
- valuable hints that spurred me on to further adventures. I'll try to
- recreate some of them for you if I can. No really good solutions yet, so I
- hope this generates some new ideas.
-
- (Too bad no one seems to be trying to script Quark, so they could confirm
- my findings.)
-
- I'm going to throw the quotes in at random without attribution. You know
- who you are.
-
- > The correct way, documented in the language errata file on disk is:
- > set foo to "This is a test"
- > text from word 1 to word 3 of foo

-
- Ah, that would be much better. I was almost about to get into dealing with
- one of those lists of characters, replacing them one at a time and putting
- them back together. (almost)
-
- BUT, unfortunately, Quark doesn't do this. It returns an error, "can't
- make some data into expected type." when you try to get text from ___ to
- ___ of ____.
-
- > You usually cannot change individual words in a paragraph (or string)
- > unless the app supports it. I don't have Quark, but you may be able

- >
- > select last word of paragraph x set contents of selection to "NEW WORD"
-
- Nope, Quark doesn't seem to have any selection properties. I was looking
- for that right away when I started into this.
-
- > If you want to do word replacement in AS strings you must cut & paste
- > yourself.
-
- I'm beginning to think I'll have to do this. Would have been better to
- keep it in Quark, though.
-
- > I don't have XPress--which is why I didn't answer earlier, but...it
- > has one of the better Apple event implementations around.
-
- Well, it looks like it does. It has a huge dictionary and reams of
- documentation. It just doesn't seem to do anything right.
-
- > I think we need to see more of the context. How are you making clear
- > to XPress what contains the paragraph you care about?
-
- Okay, if you want the grizzly details. The idea is that you've got catalog
- entries with an order number at the beginning of a paragraph and the price
- at the end. Say that one of the things that changes most often in the
- catalog is the prices, it would be a natural use of scripting to update
- them. So, I want to find the entry by the order # and change the price.
- Sounded really basic to me.
-
- I'm referencing the paragraph with the construct:
-
- tell every story of front document
- tell (every paragraph where it contains "490-85-110")
-
- (I'm not always using the second tell, the part in parenthesis is the
- crux, and has been used with many, many different statements in the course
- of my test.
-
- This way of finding the paragraph does have some bearing on the problem
- with accessing words of the paragraph. For those who came in late, if I say:
-
- word -1 of (every paragraph where it contains "490-85-110")
-
- I get the whole paragraph returned. If I put it into a variable, I get the
- price returned as I would hope. The other issue, besides referencing the
- word, is doing anything with it once i've got it. I can set the "word"
- (the whole paragraph) to another word, but when I went about trying to
- deal with the characters, I couldn't do anything to them.
-
- I did find one statement that Quark wouldn't choke on, involving making
- words or text with data "foo" after or at somewhere, but....nothing seemed
- to happen! It executed, but "foo" never appeared anywhere in the document.
-
- Late-breaking news in the word defining scene: I just found that I could
- get less than the whole paragraph returned if I use:
-
- text of (every paragraph where it contains "490-85-110")
-
- (Didn't I do that before?)
-
- BUT...now, the last word is returned as just the two digits after the
- decimal!!! (Applescript returned the whole price as a word.)
- Seems to be a catch at every turn. Oh, yeah, I also didn't mention that
- the price should be a different color than the rest of the text, which is
- another reason it would be better to be able to refer to the word in Quark
- and deal with it there. sigh.

- My company has just announced a Newton developer kit which lets you

-
- I'm especially interested if anyone has any good samples scripts for

- XPress is being scripted heavily around the country, producing newspaper
- classified sections, large catalogs with pictures, etc etc. When I talk to
- the portion of these users who call UserLand for support with Frontier
- scripting of Quark, I tend to get EMail addresses on commercial services,
- not here, when I ask. And, there are active discussions in such places as
- the Desktop Publishing forum on CIS, and the UserLand forum on CIS (which
- has a section devoted to XPress).
-
- There may also be an active area on the Internet...I haven't looked.

-
- On the contrary, XPress' scripting support was put in by a developer to
- took great care to implement things according to the Registry. And worked
- hard in many cases to be sure that his reading of the Registry agreed with
- others (sometimes I agreed with him, sometimes I didn't).
-
- Nonetheless, there are glitches. There is also a simple fact: what one
- expects out of an application may not be what one gets, yet BOTH your
- expectations and the application can be completely right. There are many
- different ways to correctly implement this stuff.
-
- Since you don't seem to be having luck changing one word of the contents of
- a textbox, you may have to get the whole contents, change them in your
- script, and put them back as a unit. I would hope not.
-
- You should also look around for Quark Xtensions which help with this stuff.
- There are some, and more appear regularly, so I'm told. [No, I don't have
- a source to point you to.]

-
- FrontWindow() returns the front window in *your layer*. The checking
- you're thinking of dates back to the time of DAs under pre-MultiFinder
- System 6. One is still supposed to check that the FrontWindow() in your
- layer is one of your own windows, and not something put there by the
- System. Nothing in the System currently puts windows into applications'
- layers, but that could change in the future...
-
- Examining another application's windows could be done from an INIT,
- which can execute while another application is active. It gets kind of
- hairy, though, and one can't collect much meaningful information. It
- would be possible to determine the title of the window, but not much
- else.

- I am quite familiar with scripting Quark, but unfortunately (for you) all of
- this scripting has been done with Frontier.
-
- In Frontier, getting the last word of a paragragh could be done like
-
- with document[1].page[1].textbox[foo]
- wordcount = count(paragraph[bar],word)
- theword = get(paragraph[bar].word[wordcount])
-
- 'theword' will be the text of the last word of the paragraph. (Please note
- that non a-z or 0-9 characters are not considered to be a part of the word.
- This can be changed by use of the delimittable property.)
-
- The support for scripting in Quark is extensive, as almost anything can be
- done. I have on many occasions been extremely frustrated by Quark not
- appearing to respond to scripts correctly, but have always found out that the
- error was mine. Quark is extremely picky about how you specify something or
- how you ask for info about something.
-
- I'm not sure if this will help you at all, so I'll stop now. Let me know if
- you have any other questions.

- Hi, David...
- Thanks for the post. You *ought* to be able to reduce your most welcome
- example to (assuming you don't need wordcount for something else, of
- course)
-
- with document[1].page[1].textbox[foo]
- theword = get(paragraph[bar].word[-1])
-
- Negative indices should count from the end of a container forward.
-
- Fairly direct translation of the above
-
- tell application "QuarkXPress" -- or whatever
- tell textbox foo of page 1 of document 1
- set theword to word -1 of paragraph bar
- --or: last word of paragraph bar
- end tell
- end tell
-
- I don't, of course, know whether the translation works.

- Is anyone on the list scripting FileMaker Pro? I've found it pretty

- Is there a better source of documentation on scripting FileMaker

-
- Two problems I am having:
-
- 1) Get data returns records which are the nearest match e.g.
-
- set rec to Get Data (first Record whose first Cell = partnum)
- of Window dbname
-
-
- with a partnum of "1" will return records "100", "110" etc. Is there any way to
- do an exact match?
-
- 2) Can you get a count of found records as opposed to total records? E.g.
-
- Show (every Record of Database "mydatabase" whose Cell "Name" = "Todd")
- set n to (Count of Database "mydatabase" Class Record)
-
- returns the total number of records rather than the found set.
-
- Thanks for any help.

- Subject: Debugging an applet properly
-
- I'm writing a large AppleScript applet, and have two problems:
-
- 1. I need to have a reliable way to refer to the applet's own
- parent folder, because that's where I store some configuration
- files the applet uses (I donUt want to hardcode the path).
- "path to me" returns the path to the applet only when it's running
- as an applet. When it's run from inside Script Editor, "me" is
- interpreted to be Script Editor -- not the desirable effect. I'm
- tired of having to hardcode in a path every time I need to debug
- the applet; is there any way to say, path to this very script file?
-
- 2. I have a large idle handler in my applet, and there doesn't seem
- to be a way to have Script Editor send an idle message to the applet
- when it's being debugged in it. Consequently, I have to comment out
- the on idle and end idle statements every time I debug. It's annoying,
- like item 1.
-
- I would appreciate any suggestions.

-
- Indeed they do! Thanks! It never occured to me... it makes perfect sense, but
- somehow I never thought... wow :>
-
- If paragraph bar (in the Quark document) is
- Go to the end of the road to see what you can see.
-
- theword will be 'see'
-
- Please note that the period is missing.
-
- set(delimittable[1].delimititem["."],canstartorendorbecontainedinword)
-
- will tell Quark to include period in the set of characters that can start or
- end or be contained in a word. Other possible values are notwordmember,
- canstartorendword, canbecontainedinword. These changes to the delimit table
- are not saved in documents or in the Quark app itself, so they must be set
- every time if your script needs them.
-
-
- with document[1].page[1].textbox[foo]
- thedata = get(word[contents == bar].offset)
-
- thedata will be a list of the integer locations of the word bar in the
- textbox if there is more than one match, an integer otherwise. If you want to
- search a whole textflow (or story, textflow[1] seems to me to be identical to
- story[1])
-
- with document[1].page[1].textbox[foo].story[1]
-
- will search the entire textflow (a potentially slow process) and also return
- a list or integer.
-
- One more potential problem (it has caused me many frustrating moments)
-
- with document[1].page[foo].textbox[bar]
-
- foo may be any type that is coercable to an integer.
-
- If bar is a string, Quark assumes that it is the name of the textbox rather
- than its number.
-
- Don't give up! Quark is extremely scriptable, it really does work.

- There is a QuickTime Player that can be used within Director that can
- trigger AppleScript. You can define hot buttons inside a QuickTime movie
- and when the user presses that button you either transfer to another
- quicktime movie or you trigger an ApleScript. It is Video Navigator sold by
- Radiant Enterprises <radiant@applelink.apple.com> I understand it works
- quite well from within Director.

-
- Frontmost is the original name of FaceSpan (also referred to as FaceSpam by
- the mailing list wags). The name was changed when the AppleScript Scripter's
- Kit was released in Dec 93 (it is also included in the AppleScript Developer's
- Kit and the Updates--for those who bought earlier versions of the Scripter's
- and Developer's kits). In the simplest terms, FaceSpan is a user interface
- builder for your AppleScripts. It allows you to create windows, dialog boxes,
- etc. with attached scripts. Though it is a bit buggy, some users on the list
- seem to have used it successfully.
-
- I'm sure others will contribute more to this sketchy bit of info.

-
- Hi folks,
-
- We are going to start a mailing list for users of, and people
- interested in, ScriptWizard. This mailing list will run on our UUCP
- server here at Full Moon Software, via email only.
-
- To join the list, or remove yourself from the list, or to ask
- administrative questions, please send email to:
- list.admin@ctalk.exnet.com
- (please note this list is administered manually, so it may take
- up to a few days to add or remove names).
-
- The ScriptWizard mailing list will be a forum for us to announce new
- versions, and (most important) for users to discuss their likes,
- dislikes, and suggestions for new versions of the product. It is not
- intended to stop people discussing general scripting issues that relate
- to SW on the MACSCRPT mailing list, but we expect it will help to limit
- commercially oriented traffic on the main MACSCRPT list (which, we
- are sure, will please the MACSCRPT moderators :-) ).
-
-
- best regards, Paul

-
- ----
- From: Berrie.Kremers@kub.nl
- Subject: Quit It
- Date: Mon, 31 Jan 1994 22:44:35 +0100
-
- Enclosed is Quit It v1.2.1, which is a replacement of v1.1 and
- v1.2. Please remove all versions 1.2, because they contain a
- serious bug!!!
-
- A description of Quit It:
- A Macintosh is very easy to use, but neverteless there are naive
- users who don't understand anything about processes etc. All they
- see is windows on the screen, and to stop working they just close
- the window using the close box. But this leaves the application open,
- which can lead to confusion on one side, and on a shortage of memory
- on the other side. Quit It can take away this problem: whenever the
- last window of an application is closed using the close box, it will
- quit the application. That's all there is to it.
- ----
-
- Of course, if you insist on reinventing the wheel with Applescript ...

- as the archive maintainer , i would like you all to know about
- availability of this control-strip-modules-site (i am also thinking of
- puttin a script and a source dir in the archive)
-
- attached is my announcement posting on usenet.
- --- cut from posting ---
- Hi, Control Strip Fans:
-
- Welcome to the first "Control Strip Module Archive" on the net(as far
- as I know and hope) :-) It will run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week until
- the end of August 1994 (I will have an IP address change then, so just
- email me and i will send you the new site address)
-
- The current archive site is at:
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- matrix29.schapiro.dorm.columbia.edu
- 128.59.222.82
-
- To ensure that this archive is up-to-date, I will be compiling Freeware,
- Shareware, and "any-other-ware" Modules off the net, CompuServe, America
- OnLine, etc. on a regular basis(ususally dialy). However, Control Strip
- Developers, please upload or emai me your new module(s), and It will be
- available to the net within 1-4 hours.
-
- The modules contained in this archive are NOT commerical softwares.
-
- I would like to thank the following people for their advice and support:
- (the names are in the order of their product releases)
- Mr. Robert S. Mah<rmah@panix.com>, author of "Control Strip Patcher"
- Patrick McClaughry<patm@parcplace.com>, author of "Ballon Help ME"
- Jeremy Kezer<jbkezer@aol.com>, author of "Jeremy's Control Strip Modules"
-
- Last but maybe the most, please do expect some connection refused messages
- as well as the slow transfer rate between the hours of 20:00 - 24:00 EST, for
- the simple reason that I am at the console (unfortunately system 7 does
- still
- crash too often)

- Hi,
-
- Script Tools allows you to figure out the file spec of the running script
- (compiled script applications only). Try the following:
-
- get process (get current process)
- display dialog ((application file of the result) as string)

- In my mind, there is only one non-wimpy text editor on the Mac. It's an Apple
- product: MPW Shell. It's a combination shell/editor, you can drive it via
- scripts, define custom menus, redefine key bindings, and write new tools that
- run under it. You can also feed it commands via "Do Script" AppleEvents. You
- can fix the creator codes on all your text files with one "SetFile" command,

- Subject: How to pause in scripts (trying to script mail operations)
-
- This is my first posting so please ecxuse any mistakes, excessive length,
- points covered in faqs etc. Does anyone know of a way to pause a script
- either for a set period of time or until something has happened. I need to
- do this as I am trying to script my mail programs, Eudora to logon, get my
- mail then close the connection and quit and Leemail to receive my mail. My
- service provider, Demon, sends SMTP mail as soon as I login so all I have
- to do is have my PPP connection opened by Leemail which it does
- automatically or have it running when the connection is opened.
-
- I am using the MacPPP Control scripting addition to control any opening or
- closing of my PPP connection where necessary, and the Menu Events Scripting
- Addition to select send queued mail from within Eudora.
-
- The main problem is making the scripts wait until Eudora has finished
- sending mail before quitting and until Leemail has finished receiving
- before quitting.
-
- I have tried using timeouts and dialog boxes but they require me to be
- present defeating the purpose of the programs. I have also tried using the
- time the program has been running returned by the Application Info
- scripting addition in a repeat until. A sort of repeat until time = 180
- with the get the info line just before and also within the loop to give the
- programs three minutes but this didn't work. I know that Eudora is
- AppleScriptable but its commands are mainly related to filing messages and
- replying to existing messages. At present I am using Eudora v1.4, maybe the
- later versions are more scriptable I will have to have a look.
-
- I ideally want to be able to set the scripts to run at a certain time of
- the day, any suggestions as to how, preferably allowing the mac to be used
- in the meantime.
-
- If anyone has already scripted these mail operations using any non
- commercial applications particularly the two I am using then scripts or
- details of these other programs would be greatly appreciated.
-
- Thanks a lot, Neil.

-
- For the CD and hard disk which came with my early Power Mac, the answers
- are that a bare AppleScript (1.1) comes with the Power Mac, but the
- Scriptable Finder doesn't.

-
- If you're willing to wait anyhow, then perhaps you can wait until System 7.5.
-
- But...if you put any reasonable value on your time (what you could sell it
- for, what having more of it is worth to you in terms of doing free time
- things, etc), the time wasted fooling with FinderLib, Finder Liaison,
- Scripting Additions, etc etc is worth more than the cost of the Scriptable
- Finder today. [But...the outlay is real cash, while the gain is unreal:
- even better, since there's no income tax on the gain as there would be if
- you sold that much time to someone.]

- It will come with AS1.1 (mine did). The scriptable Finder hadn't been
- released when I bought mine, so I don't know if it is included now.
-
- You could wait for Sys7.5, though.
-
- Hope this helps,
