  2. Options for startup configuration
  3. =================================

  5. To stop startup configuration from starting one file should be locked against changes as by typing this command at a command prompt.
  6. access boot:choices.boot.desktop RL/R
  7. To allow changes again the command is:
  8. access boot:choices.boot.desktop RWL/R/W
  9. Alternatively the whole boot application can be locked.

  11. Double click on the !Boot application to configure the startup operation.
  12.  
  13. To save the options you have made click on the 'Save' button.
  14. To cancel any options you have made click on the 'Cancel' button.
  15. To select default options click on the 'Default' button.
  16. Where possible use interactive help to show you what options are available,
  17. click on the 'Help' button to load interactive help.

  19. This window will accept many different files being dragged into it:
  20.  
  21.    Sprite files: Installed to use as window borders, desktop icons and
  22.    backgrounds.
  23.  
  24.    Desktop boot files: Processed and saved so that they are run when the
  25.    desktop starts. They are split so that pinboard settings are kept
  26.    separate.
  27.  
  28.    Pinboard : Processed and saved so that the pinboard is restored when the
  29.    computer starts. They are filtered so that the background is still set on
  30.    configuration.

  32.    !Sytem, !Scrap, !Fonts: Are installed or merged with an older copy in the
  33.    resources directory. Use this funtion to install new fonts and to update 
  34.    your !System and !Scrap applications.

  36. There are two option areas, appearance and applications options:

  39. Appearance Options

  42. Appearance options set how the computer looks when it starts up.
  43. To see what your chosen appearance looks like click on the 'Try appearance'
  44. button.

  46. The 'Window Borders' option controls what kind of border sprites are used to
  47. draw windows. To choose from a list of the installed window borders click on
  48. the menu icon on the right.

  50. The 'Desktop Icons' option controls what kind of sprites are used to draw the
  51. standard icons on the desktop. To choose from a list of the installed desktop
  52. icons click on the menu icon on the right.

  54. The 'Background' option chooses what background to use. To choose from a list
  55. of the installed background click on the menu icon on the right. When a
  56. background is chosen select whether it should be tiled, scaled or centred.

  58. The '3D windows' option will tell compliant applications if they should use
  59. 3D style or old style windows.

  61. The 'Solid icon dragging' option selects solid dragging of file icons.

  63. To install new appearances for your computer drag a sprite file into the
  64. Startup Configuration window and a window will pop up to ask what you want
  65. to use the sprites for, select an option and click on 'Ok' to install.

  69. Application Options

  72. Applications options set what applications are booted or installed into the
  73. 'Apps' directory on the icon bar.
  74.  
  75. The !Boot application works best when all applications that respond to file
  76. loading are in a single applications directory, but this isn't necessary.
  77.  
  78. The 'Auto boot main applications directory' option will boot all the
  79. applications in the main applications directory, this lets them load files
  80. without being seen by the filer. To set where the main applications
  81. directory is type in its path or click on the menu button to show a icon
  82. that can be dragged to a display of your chosen directory.

  84. The 'Show main applications in apps dir' option will show each application
  85. in the main applications directory in the apps directory on the icon bar.

  87. The 'Show selected applications in apps dir' option will show selective
  88. applications in the apps directory on the icon bar. To change this selection
  89. click on the 'Alter selected'. To make a selection drag applications into
  90. the window, to remove applications select them from the list and click on
  91. the 'Remove Item' button. When finished click on the 'Done' button.

  93. The 'Show auto start directory' button open a directory where files are run
  94. when the desktop has started. Drag an application into this directory if you
  95. want it to start automatically.

  97. The 'Show Pre Desk start directory' button open a directory. Drag files into
  98. this directory to start them before the desktop has started, use this to
  99. load modules that should be run before everything else. The !Sprites
  100. application will load iconsprites depending on which mode the computer is
  101. started in. Put the high definition sprites here to load them automatically.
