- Options for startup configuration

- To stop startup configuration from starting one file should be locked against changes as by typing this command at a command prompt.
- access boot:choices.boot.desktop RL/R
- To allow changes again the command is:
- access boot:choices.boot.desktop RWL/R/W
- Alternatively the whole boot application can be locked.

- Double click on the !Boot application to configure the startup operation.

- To save the options you have made click on the 'Save' button.
- To cancel any options you have made click on the 'Cancel' button.
- To select default options click on the 'Default' button.
- Where possible use interactive help to show you what options are available,
- click on the 'Help' button to load interactive help.

- This window will accept many different files being dragged into it:
-
- Sprite files: Installed to use as window borders, desktop icons and
- backgrounds.

- Desktop boot files: Processed and saved so that they are run when the
- desktop starts. They are split so that pinboard settings are kept
- separate.

- Pinboard : Processed and saved so that the pinboard is restored when the
- computer starts. They are filtered so that the background is still set on
- configuration.

- !Sytem, !Scrap, !Fonts: Are installed or merged with an older copy in the
- resources directory. Use this funtion to install new fonts and to update
- your !System and !Scrap applications.

- There are two option areas, appearance and applications options:

- Appearance Options
- ==================

- Appearance options set how the computer looks when it starts up.
- To see what your chosen appearance looks like click on the 'Try appearance'
- button.

- The 'Window Borders' option controls what kind of border sprites are used to
- draw windows. To choose from a list of the installed window borders click on
- the menu icon on the right.

- The 'Desktop Icons' option controls what kind of sprites are used to draw the
- standard icons on the desktop. To choose from a list of the installed desktop
- icons click on the menu icon on the right.

- The 'Background' option chooses what background to use. To choose from a list
- of the installed background click on the menu icon on the right. When a
- background is chosen select whether it should be tiled, scaled or centred.

- The '3D windows' option will tell compliant applications if they should use
- 3D style or old style windows.

- The 'Solid icon dragging' option selects solid dragging of file icons.

- To install new appearances for your computer drag a sprite file into the
- Startup Configuration window and a window will pop up to ask what you want
- to use the sprites for, select an option and click on 'Ok' to install.

- Application Options
- ===================

- Applications options set what applications are booted or installed into the
- 'Apps' directory on the icon bar.

- The !Boot application works best when all applications that respond to file
- loading are in a single applications directory, but this isn't necessary.

- The 'Auto boot main applications directory' option will boot all the
- applications in the main applications directory, this lets them load files
- without being seen by the filer. To set where the main applications
- directory is type in its path or click on the menu button to show a icon
- that can be dragged to a display of your chosen directory.

- The 'Show main applications in apps dir' option will show each application
- in the main applications directory in the apps directory on the icon bar.

- The 'Show selected applications in apps dir' option will show selective
- applications in the apps directory on the icon bar. To change this selection
- click on the 'Alter selected'. To make a selection drag applications into
- the window, to remove applications select them from the list and click on
- the 'Remove Item' button. When finished click on the 'Done' button.

- The 'Show auto start directory' button open a directory where files are run
- when the desktop has started. Drag an application into this directory if you
- want it to start automatically.

- The 'Show Pre Desk start directory' button open a directory. Drag files into
- this directory to start them before the desktop has started, use this to
- load modules that should be run before everything else. The !Sprites
- application will load iconsprites depending on which mode the computer is
- started in. Put the high definition sprites here to load them automatically.
