  14. This application is intended to guard private directories from the prying 
  15. eyes of other users.

  21. Couldn't be easier.

  23. DELETE ALL OTHER COPIES OF PROTECTOR 3 & 4

  25. Copy this application to a place of your choice (do not use root directory).
  26. If you require Protection when you turn your machine on you will have to 
  27. include the application in your boot-up sequence otherwise protection will
  28. only be available when Protector is loaded.

  32. Setting up the appliation

  36. After you have installed protector on your disc, it is now time to setup
  37. the directories you wish to guard.
  38.  
  39. Load the application if you already have not done so.
  40.  
  41. Nothing will happen until you press 'Select A N D Alt Left O R Alt Right'
  42.  
  43. Now you should have a window appear by your mouse pointer like below :-

  57. The application is asking you for a 'Master' password which will allow
  58. access to various settings of security and setting up of the directories
  59. to guard.

  61. Click Select over the blank white space at the bottom of the window and a
  62. caret appears.

  64. Since this is the first time you use this application the password you 
  65. should enter is 'PROTECTOR' then press Return. This password can be changed
  66. later.

  109. This is the area where you can set the protection level.
  110. You do this by clicking in the radio icon of your choice which is Low, 
  111. Medium or High.
  112.  
  113. Protection Levels :
  114.  
  115. The High setting makes protector keep on alert for 'Task Window" starting
  116. or F12 (access to CLI prompt) or mouse pointer going near task manager.
  117. These are basic security features to stop access to the guarded directories
  118. by using *Filer_Open <name> *DIR etc. This may be the option for schools
  119. to stop access to games directories etc etc. However any advanced user who
  120. know the archimedes very will can quite easily find other ways around this.
  121. This will stop the novice user.
  122.  
  123. The Medium just stops the F12 options and access to the guarded directories.
  124.  
  125. The Low setting just gives the protection to the directories but does not
  126. keep aware for F12 options or task window starting. This may be the option
  127. for home users who want to deter the outsider/novice user.

  130. Section B

  134. This section allows you to have one of three sound samples that will take
  135. effect when a wrong password has been entered to gain access to a directory.               
  136.  
  137. The 3 samples are :-
  138.  
  139. 1) The Hammer  - "U Can't touch this"
  140. 2) The Bouncer - "Your names not down your not coming in"
  141. 3) Rebel MC    - Street Tuff sample.

  144. Section C

  147. In this section you can enter a new master password to gain access to the
  148. Master Control window (this one). Click select over the white rectangle
  149. and a caret will appear. Here you can enter your new password which will
  150. appear on the screen as *'s. After you have entered the password press
  151. return.
  152.  
  153. If you wish to save the protecion level, sound effect and master password
  154. for default loading you can click on the 'Save Setup' icon. Otherwise
  155. these effects will only last until the machine is turned off.
  156.  
  157. The Kill icon 'kills' the application if you do not require any protection
  158. anymore. This and using the quit option from the menu is the only way to 
  159. kill the application. You can not kill it from task manager.

  161. The 'Edit Directories' icon opens a window like below :-

  174. There are 12 slots which allows the details for 12 directories to be guarded
  175.                        
  176. The A is the slot number
  177.     B        FULL path name of the directory to be protected
  178.     C        password for the directory protected
  179.     D        opens a menu offering 1 of 4 actions which will be covered
  180.              later on.
  181.  
  182. To guard a directory :- 
  183.  
  184. Just DRAG the directory onto the window and the path name will appear in
  185. the next free slot.
  186.  
  187. You can perform a multiple drag (ie drag several dirs to the window in one
  188. go) which will fill each slot one by one.
  189.  
  190. If all slots are full, click SELECT over one of the slots in the 'B' box
  191. so that the caret appears, then drag the directory over and it will replace
  192. the pathname with the new one you wish to protect. If you drag the directory
  193. over and ypu have not selected a slot, it will be placed at the top.

  195. You then have to enter passwords for the directories you want to protect.
  196. Click SELECT over the corresponding 'C' box and enter the password at the
  197. caret. The password can be 10 characters in length.
  198.  
  199. To DELETE an entry simply delete the path name from the slot and press
  200. return which will wipe the password and flags.
  201.  
  202. You have told 'Protector' what directories you wish to protect and the
  203. corresponding passwords to use. If you now click SELECT over the 'D' box
  204. over an occupied slot, it will open a menu offering 4 actions. If these
  205. are all shaded, it means no directory information has been entered into the
  206. slot. 
  207.  
  208. The four actions mean :
  209.   
  210. Action 1 : This is the default. This will open a security window and request
  211.            a password to gain access to the directory. If the password
  212.            entered is incorrect, it will play the sound sample selected in
  213.            the 'Master Control' window. This will happen every time access
  214.            to this directory is requested by a user double clicking or using
  215.            a shift double click.

  217. Action 2 : Performs the same as Action 1 except does not play a sound sample
  218.  
  219. Action 3 : Performs same as Action 1 except remembers if the password has
  220.            been entered correctly and never asks again until the next time
  221.            protector has been reloaded.

  223. Action 4 : Perfoms same as Action 3 without sound samples.

  227. Please Note:
  228. ============

  230. If you are running protector from a floppy disk, you are advised to use
  231. actions 2 and 4. The actions as mentioned do not play sound samples.
  232. This advise if for one reason. The samples are loaded on request of the
  233. application and does not remain in memory, this would not be suitable as
  234. samples can obtain valuable work space. Therefor you would have to insert
  235. the disk holding !Protector every time a password was entered incorrectly.

  237. Using the sound sample options 1 and 3 are recommended if !Protector runs
  238. from a harddisc drive or similar (DAT ? :-) ) where it does not have to
  239. request disk insertion.

  241. Now you have setup all the information you will probably want to save the
  242. information. To do this goto the 'Master Control' window and click on
  243. the 'Save Directories' icon.

  246. Quitting !Protector
  247. ___________________

  249. You can not quit protector from the task manager. Instead you have to quit
  250. the program from the Master Control window. This is because a user could
  251. quit the application from the task window resulting in no protection.

  257. !Protector will recreate its own table and config file if they appear
  258. missing or corrupt.

  260. !Protector guards its parent directory.

  267. I can not be held responsible for data loss/machine trouble and every thing
  268. else nasty which might be linked with the application !Protector. You use
  269. this appliation at your own risk.

  271. The application is still in development stage and is a project being worked
  272. on all the time. There probably are bugs here and there but on the whole the
  273. application runs fairly stable.

  275. There are ways around the protection, but only real advanced users will 
  276. know of them. These methods around protection will be covered all in good
  277. time.
