  1. Introduction
  2. ============

  4. HardBack is a hard disc backup utility which allows you to protect 
  5. your data from unforeseen events.  If your hard disc crashes or you 
  6. accidentally delete an important file, having a backup copy can 
  7. save you a great deal of trouble and prevent you losing what may 
  8. be many hours work.  It can also help, for example, if your 
  9. computer is stolen or some errant virus deletes your hard work.
  10.  
  11. HardBack is Shareware, which means that, if you like it, use it 
  12. regularly or want the features of the full version, then you send £10 
  13. to the author: see Appendix A for details.
  14.  
  15. This is a demonstration version of HardBack, which means that 
  16. some of the features - compression being a major one - have been 
  17. removed.  There will be no further demo versions of HardBack, 
  18. except possibly small bug fixes, as I shall now spend time 
  19. improving the registered version.

  21. Features of this demo of HardBack include:-

  23. •    StrongARM compliance
  24. •    Splitting of large files between discs
  25. •    Filling up of discs completely
  26. •    Multitasking backup and restore operations, allowing you to 
  27.     get on with other work while the backup proceeds
  28. •    Restoring selected items from windows which look and 
  29.     behave almost exactly like Filer windows
  30. •    Dragging of objects from the selected items window directly 
  31.     onto programs, without having to drag them to a disc first
  32. •    Selecting of many destinations from any FileCore filing 
  33.     system, such as ADFS, SCSI, IDE etc.
  34. •    Backing up on media of any size, from 12K RAM discs to 
  35.     4Gb+ hard drives
  36. •    Mixing of media size within the same backup
  37. •    Choosing to backup particular files/directories or backup the 
  38.     contents of one directory
  39. •    Choosing to backup only particular types of files, including 
  40.     Impression documents
  41. •    Ignoring certain files/directories, if you do not want them to 
  42.     be backed up
  43. •    Backing up of objects created after either the last backup or 
  44.     created after a specified date and time
  45. •    Choosing various options about how to backup PC partitions 
  46.     and similar files
  47. •    Optimising HardBack to work as efficiently as possible 
  48.     through various configuration options
  49. •    Saving of all options as a script file, which, as well as being 
  50.     able to be reloaded into HardBack, can be run from other 
  51.     programs or double clicked to start the backup procedure
  52. •    Saving of a script file as the default to be loaded when 
  53.     HardBack starts up. This script file can be anywhere and 
  54.     need not be inside the !Backup application
  55. •    Requiring no disc workspace for Backup and Restore: they 
  56.     do not write to files inside their applications, so they could 
  57.     easily be put onto a CD-Rom
  58. •    Carrying out of a backup operation without human assistance 
  59.     - for example, in the middle of the night - due to several 
  60.     command line options
  61. •    Managing of memory dynamically, which allows you to alter 
  62.     the amount of memory used as workspace by HardBack
  63. •    Formatting of discs automatically, if necessary
  64. •    Preserving of all the other files on backup discs, which need 
  65.     not be empty: the files will remain intact, if you wish
  66. •    Informing you comprehensively of how the backup is 
  67.     proceeding and giving you an estimate of time to go
  68. •    Pausing of the backup operation option, which allows you to 
  69.     halt it temporarily
  70. •    Backing up can be stopped at any point, without quitting the 
  71.     application
  72. •    Restoring the whole backup or only selected items, as you 
  73.     prefer
  74. •    Working on all versions of Risc OS, under Risc OS 3, 
  75.     with nice 3D windows and solid sprite drags for all drag 
  76.     operations
  77. •    Containing all messages in a file which can be translated into 
  78.     any language
  79. •    Backing up of individual files directly from the source entry, 
  80.     a way to archive large files over several discs
  81. •    Supporting fully of Interactive help

  83. Installation
  84. ============

  86. To install HardBack onto your hard disc, simply drag the 
  87. applications !Backup and !Restore to a suitable directory viewer on 
  88. your hard disc.  But remember that, if you pass this demo version 
  89. of HardBack onto anyone else, you must include the 
  90. documentation and all other files in the HardBack directory; it only 
  91. inconveniences them if they don’t have any instructions.
