- CurlBack - Alternative Application Launcher
- -------------------------------------------
- v1.01
- =====

-
- --------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- This application may be freely distributed providing
-
- - All files, including this !Help file are included
- - No charge is made other than for the cost of the media
-
- Profit making organisations may only distribute this application
- with my express permission.
-
- You use CurlBack at your own risk. I've got to say this, and you'd
- better take it seriously, because I know that there are nutters out
- there who try to take advantage of kind hearted people even though
- they write software for free distribution and use.
-
- --------------------------------------------------------------------
- What does it do:
- ================
-
- CurlBack places your most frequently used files at your fingertips
- however messy your desktop is and does so without using key shortcuts.
-
- CurlBack is a simple desktop application, written in 100% ArmCode,
- using completely legal system calls.
-
- It has extra (including DragASprite) support for RISC OS 3, but
- works (nearly) as well under RISC OS 2. It also seems to work
- on the Risc-PC (Ok, so my first attempt didn't because of the
- smaller page size)
-
-
- --------------------------------------------------------------------
- How can I make it work:
- =======================
-
- Once run, the top left corner of the screen turns down. Since
- I've not implemented AI, you'll have to drag your most commonly
- used applications onto the corner icon to tell CurlBack where
- they may be found.
-
- At any time, you can zoom the mouse into the top left corner,
- and the CurlBack window pops open, displaying all your most
- commonly used files.
-
- You can start an application by double clicking on its icon,
- or by dragging it onto the icon bar.
-
- Select an icon by clicking on it or dragging a box to completely
- surround it. Add more icons by adjust clicking, or by adjust dragging.
-
- Move selected icons by dragging with adjust (that's the right
- hand mouse button).
-
- To open the parent application, double click on an icon while
- holding down the [Alt] key.
-
- Once you are happy with the positions of your icons, you can
- save the settings. Click menu over the open CurlBack window,
- and choose the "Save" option.
-
- --------------------------------------------------------------------
- You want MORE?
- ==============
-
- Ok, so there are a few interesting menu options.
-
- The main menu:
-
- Info - move to the right to find out information about CurlBack
- Save - click on this option to save all the icons so that next
- time CurlBack starts up, all your icons are ready for
- action
- Icon - move to the right for a menu dedicated to any selected icons
- Select All - click on this option to select all the icons. Not
- very useful really...
- Default - move to the right to define how new icons will appear
- when initially dropped into CurlBack
- Options - change CurlBack's behavior
- Quit - since CurlBack only takes 32k in use, you'll never
- need this one.
-
-
- The icon menu:
-
- Remove - when you're tired of an icon, retire it with this option
- Small - ah ha! So CurlBack takes up too much room does it!?
- Run - um. Not a useful option. If you can't work it out
- for yourself, you'll not understand any description...
- Text - much more useful. Why call an application by it's real
- name. No character is disallowed, and there is almost
- no limit on length.
- Sprite - and why use the same boring old icon? Name your sprite.
- Font - system font is fastest, but outline fonts look better.
- One day, I'll add a font menu, but for now you have to
- type in the name of the font.
- Size - if you're not using system font, you might want a different
- height for your text
- Height - use this option to change the text aspect ratio
-
-
- The default menu:
-
- Small - select this option, and all new icons will start small
- Font - choose which font to apply to all new icons. Existing
- icons will not change.
- Size - choose the default text size
- Height - and you can even change the aspect ratio
-
-
- The options:
-
- Grid Lock - turns on a very slight grid, that makes aligning much
- easier
- Menu to open - Sometimes, CurlBack is too eager to respond. With
- this option selected, you'll have to click menu on the
- top left corner in order to open the CurlBack window
-
- --------------------------------------------------------------------
- Why is it so tacky?
- ===================
-
- Hey! That's not fair.
-
- I happen rather to like it.
-
- --------------------------------------------------------------------
- Why should I use CurlBack?
- ==========================
-
- There are hundreds of application launchers out there. Very few
- actually work under pressure. Because I needed something better, I
- wrote CurlBack in 1993 for my own use. After such an extensive
- (and selfish) period of testing, I think it's about time it saw
- light of day.
-
- Try it. You'll either love it or hate it.
-
- Oh yes. There are some reasons why I like it, and you will too.
-
- - it's 32k in size, even in use.
- - it doesn't slow the machine down
- - you can still use Pinboard (I do), or an equivalent.
-
- --------------------------------------------------------------------
- Why aren't there any bugs?
- ==========================
-
- Come again?
-
- Of course there are bugs. All software has bugs, but I've been
- using CurlBack in isolation for around a year, and it hasn't
- killed me yet. I think its safe.
-
- If you do find any problems, you can contact me using the addresses
- at the end of this help file.
-
- --------------------------------------------------------------------
- Known Pecularities.
- ===================
-
- That's a funny way of putting it.
-
- Well, there are a few:
-
- - Dropping icons onto the corner icon places them in weird positions.
- - Text colour is supported, except in the menus (where it matters)
- - On RISC OS 2, the sprites don't invert (even though they bl**dy well ought to!)
- - To save memory (and effort), you'll have to type in your font names.
- No fancy font menus here.
- - The help system doesn't work. Hey, I wrote it for myself, why
- does it need help?
-
