  21. You use CurlBack at your own risk.  I've got to say this, and you'd
  22. better take it seriously, because I know that there are nutters out
  23. there who try to take advantage of kind hearted people even though
  24. they write software for free distribution and use.

  27. What does it do:
  28. ================
  29.  
  30.  CurlBack places your most frequently used files at your fingertips
  31.  however messy your desktop is and does so without using key shortcuts.
  32.  
  33.  CurlBack is a simple desktop application, written in 100% ArmCode,
  34.  using completely legal system calls.
  35.  
  36.  It has extra (including DragASprite) support for RISC OS 3, but
  37.  works (nearly) as well under RISC OS 2.  It also seems to work
  38.  on the Risc-PC (Ok, so my first attempt didn't because of the
  39.  smaller page size)

  43. How can I make it work:
  44. =======================
  45.  
  46.  Once run, the top left corner of the screen turns down.  Since
  47.  I've not implemented AI, you'll have to drag your most commonly
  48.  used applications onto the corner icon to tell CurlBack where
  49.  they may be found.
  50.  
  51.  At any time, you can zoom the mouse into the top left corner,
  52.  and the CurlBack window pops open, displaying all your most
  53.  commonly used files.
  54.  
  55.  You can start an application by double clicking on its icon,
  56.  or by dragging it onto the icon bar.
  57.  
  58.  Select an icon by clicking on it or dragging a box to completely
  59.  surround it.  Add more icons by adjust clicking, or by adjust dragging.
  60.  
  61.  Move selected icons by dragging with adjust (that's the right
  62.  hand mouse button).
  63.  
  64.  To open the parent application, double click on an icon while
  65.  holding down the [Alt] key.
  66.  
  67.  Once you are happy with the positions of your icons, you can
  68.  save the settings.  Click menu over the open CurlBack window,
  69.  and choose the "Save" option.

  75.  Ok, so there are a few interesting menu options.
  76.  
  77. The main menu:
  78.  
  79. Info       - move to the right to find out information about CurlBack
  80. Save       - click on this option to save all the icons so that next
  81.              time CurlBack starts up, all your icons are ready for
  82.              action
  83. Icon       - move to the right for a menu dedicated to any selected icons
  84. Select All - click on this option to select all the icons.  Not
  85.              very useful really...
  86. Default    - move to the right to define how new icons will appear
  87.              when initially dropped into CurlBack
  88. Options    - change CurlBack's behavior
  89. Quit       - since CurlBack only takes 32k in use, you'll never
  90.              need this one.

  93. The icon menu:
  94.  
  95. Remove     - when you're tired of an icon, retire it with this option
  96. Small      - ah ha!  So CurlBack takes up too much room does it!?
  97. Run        - um.  Not a useful option.  If you can't work it out
  98.              for yourself, you'll not understand any description...
  99. Text       - much more useful.  Why call an application by it's real
  100.              name.  No character is disallowed, and there is almost
  101.              no limit on length.
  102. Sprite     - and why use the same boring old icon?  Name your sprite.
  103. Font       - system font is fastest, but outline fonts look better.
  104.              One day, I'll add a font menu, but for now you have to
  105.              type in the name of the font.
  106. Size       - if you're not using system font, you might want a different
  107.              height for your text
  108. Height     - use this option to change the text aspect ratio
  109.

  111. The default menu:
  112.  
  113. Small      - select this option, and all new icons will start small
  114. Font       - choose which font to apply to all new icons.  Existing
  115.              icons will not change.
  116. Size       - choose the default text size
  117. Height     - and you can even change the aspect ratio
  118.

  120. The options:
  121.  
  122. Grid Lock    - turns on a very slight grid, that makes aligning much
  123.              easier
  124. Menu to open - Sometimes, CurlBack is too eager to respond.  With
  125.              this option selected, you'll have to click menu on the
  126.              top left corner in order to open the CurlBack window

  129. Why is it so tacky?
  130. ===================

  137. Why should I use CurlBack?
  138. ==========================
  139.  
  140.  There are hundreds of application launchers out there.  Very few
  141.  actually work under pressure.  Because I needed something better, I
  142.  wrote CurlBack in 1993 for my own use.  After such an extensive
  143.  (and selfish) period of testing, I think it's about time it saw
  144.  light of day.
  145.  
  146.  Try it.  You'll either love it or hate it.
  147.  
  148.  Oh yes.  There are some reasons why I like it, and you will too.
  149.  
  150.   - it's 32k in size, even in use.
  151.   - it doesn't slow the machine down
  152.   - you can still use Pinboard (I do), or an equivalent.

  155. Why aren't there any bugs?
  156. ==========================

  158.  Come again?

  160.  Of course there are bugs.  All software has bugs, but I've been
  161.  using CurlBack in isolation for around a year, and it hasn't
  162.  killed me yet.  I think its safe.

  168. Known Pecularities.
  169. ===================
  170.  
  171.  That's a funny way of putting it.
  172.  
  173.  Well, there are a few:
  174.  
  175.  - Dropping icons onto the corner icon places them in weird positions.
  176.  - Text colour is supported, except in the menus (where it matters)
  177.  - On RISC OS 2, the sprites don't invert (even though they bl**dy well ought      to!)
  178.  - To save memory (and effort), you'll have to type in your font names.
  179.    No fancy font menus here.
  180.  - The help system doesn't work.  Hey, I wrote it for myself, why
  181.    does it need help?
