- Serenade ReadMe file (Single User version)
- =============================================
-
- This file contains up to date information on Serenade along with the
- current version number and release date.
-
- Version 1.00 Release Date 01.03.93
- -----------------------------------
-
- The size of file that you can create in Serenade is dependant on memory. On
- 1Mb RISC OS 2 machines the amount of free memory is limited. An application,
- !Max, is provided on the disc which will attempt to maximise the memory
- available. Click on the !Max icon to run it. You should not have any other
- applications loaded whilst running Serenade.
-
- To create large files on Serenade we advise that you have a minimum of 2Mb
- of memory.
-
- By default, the program uses low resolution sprites. If you have more than
- 1Mb of memory and a multi-sync monitor, you will get much better icons if
- you set 'high res sprites' in the Setup window, available from the icon bar
- menu. Don't forget to Save the new setup. Serenade will use the high
- resolution icons from then on when the program is run.
-
- In Draw mode it is possible to position notes using the cursor keys. Left
- and right moves horizontally across the grid, up and down moves vertically.
- Return will enter the current note at the cursor position on the grid.
-
- The up and down cursor keys can also be used in Transpose mode. Moving the
- mouse pointer over the note and clicking on the up or down cursor causes the
- current note to be transposed by one semi-tone.
-
- The left and right cursors can be used in Nudge mode to move notes
- horizontally according to the current grid setting.
-
- Version 1.01 Release Date 10.03.93
- -----------------------------------
-
- Event List Bug Fixed (Crash with certain control events).
-
- Version 1.02 Release Date 12.03.93
- -----------------------------------
-
- This release has a major change in the way that you select instrument
- voices. The method described in the manual is still applicable but if you
- click on the new 'Folder' icon below the parameters panel in the Track
- sheet, a window pops up showing all the instruments in the current patch
- file. You can then select a voice by clicking on the one required. The new
- voice number and name is also shown in the parameters list.
-
- Windows now re-sized to full screen if the screen mode is changed.
-
- Version 1.03 Release Date 05.04.93
- -----------------------------------
-
- When you record a piece which is longer than the current number of bars,
- this version of Serenade will automatically create extra bars for you.
-
- To avoid problems with a few unusual keyboards, all controller events from
- controllers above 121 are filtered out on capture.
-
- We have received a number of calls from users with Midi instruments which do
- not have a percussion channel, complaining that the metronome does not
- sound. This arises because the user has set the metronome to a channel which
- is allocated a voice with a slow attack phase. A string voice is a good
- example. The metronome beat is a very short one which is just what is needed
- for a percussive sound but with a string sound, the event is finished before
- the sound has has time to become audible. The solution is to ensure that the
- voice used for the metronome had a rapid attack phase. A piano will work
- fine. We have also added an option for an internal metronome which uses the
- computer's sound system. See below
-
- There is a small change to the format of the midi files saved by Serenade.
- This release will load files created by the earlier versions. Some
- sequencers may not load the old files however. We suggest you load any files
- you have created with Serenade and resave them from this version.
-
-
- There are 3 new options on the setup window
-
-
- External Sync
- -------------
-
- In this sync mode Serenade will sync to an external source of midi time
- clocks + MidiStart & MidiStop. Serenade must be in play/record mode with the
- play / record & play buttons pressed. Serenade will then wait until a
- MidiStart event is received. External tempo changes will be followed and the
- tempo icon will show the current tempo. It is now possible to do a real
- time sequence dump from an external sequencer - Follow normal record
- procedure. All data received will be recorded to the current record track.
- This can then be demixed to other tracks. Serenade should now sync to a
- click track from tape. Song pointers are not implemented.
-
- Internal Metronome
- ------------------
-
- If Int Metro is selected in the Setup window AND the metro on icon is active
- in internal bleep will be sounded as well as the midi click this has been
- added in an attempt to overcome the problems some people are having with non
- - multi-timbral keyboards .The metronome will be sounded on internal channel
- 1 - by default wavesynth-beep.
-
-
- One button record
- -----------------
-
- This release introduces the notion of one press record. This is an option
- which can be set in the setup box. If this option is set, you only need to
- press Record to start recording instead of having to press Record and then
- Play. This option is OFF by default.
-
- Please note that if you wish to sync Serenade and Rhythm-Bed you should set
- Midi-Sync to OFF in the setup window
-
- If you have Rhapsody and Serenade loaded at the same time, switch Rhapsody's
- Midi Thru option OFF before using Serenade.
-
- If you have Rhapsody and Serenade loaded at the same time and wish to
- capture into Rhapsody, make sure Serenade is not in play & record mode
- first.
-
-
-
- Version 1.04 Release Date 13.04.93
- ----------------------------------
-
- This version introduces smooth tempo changes. There is an extra icon on the
- tempo track window which allows you to toggle between instantaneous and
- gradual tempo changes. When in gradual mode, the tempo will change smoothly
- from the old to the new tempo. This is represented as a diagonal line on the
- tempo map.
-
- There is a file info option on the main menu which allows you to enter text
- to identify the work and its composer.
-
- Spaces are now permitted in patch names.
-
- The keyboard short cuts for play and record now work in any mode. You no
- longer have to switch to play&record mode first.
-
- Locked tracks are not now saved in Midi files. Previously, all 16 tracks
- were always saved. Now if you have a 1 track piece, you can suppress the
- saving of the 15 other tracks by locking them. This gives a shorter file and
- avoids spurious staves when the file is loaded into Rhapsody.
-
- Controller snapshots are now saved in Midi files.
-
-
- Version 1.05 Release Date 30.04.93
- ----------------------------------
-
- This version stores arrangement data in the file.
-
- Better support is provided for Yamaha keyboards and others which handle note
- offs in a similar manner.
-
- Midi fast clock used for greater accuracy.
-
- Version 1.06 Release Date 27.07.93
- ----------------------------------
-
- Copying bars now copies tempo data.
-

- A problem which could cause notes to be duplicated has been fixed.
- Merging files now works more logically.
- The speed of loading Midi files has been improved.
-
- Version 1.07 Release Date 27.09.93
- ----------------------------------
-
- IMPORTANT CHANGE. The Midi Manufacturer's Association allocated the wrong
- manufacturer's ID to Acorn. This has now been corrected and Serenade now
- uses the correct Acorn ID. This version of Serenade will also recognise the
- old, incorrect ID used by previous versions. However, old versions of
- Serenade will not read Sequencer specific information stored by the new
- version. This means that any arrangement data and controller snapshots
- stored in a file by this version of Serenade will not be read by older
- versions.
-
- Problems which could arise when loading Midi files from Rhythmbed have been
- fixed.
-
- Problems with cut and paste when pasting past the end of the file have been
- cured.
-
- Performing a cut and paste no longer clears any arrangement present.
-
- There is a new icon on the controller window which allows you to send an all
- notes off message. This is useful if any notes get stuck on.
-
- Step names are now saved with arrangements.
-
- It is possible to enter pitch bend information from the controller window.
- Use Adjust to move to the controller before number 1.
-
- Tempo changes now take effect in arrangements.
-
- Version 1.08 Release Date 09.12.94
- -----------------------------------
-
- This version stores its data in a dynamic area if used on a Risc Pc.
-
- There is a new keyboard short cut ; keyboard * This has the same effect as
- Keyboard # and is provided for Risc PC users, since the Risc PC has no

-
-
- When the track sheet is open, clicking adjust on the channel number with the
- CTRL key down, sets all track to 'Org' (use original channel).
-
- When you save the Serenade setup, the Midi thru channel is now saved.
-
- There is a new option in the setup window. If you keep clicking adjust on
- the midi thru icon, it will eventually go to 'All'. This means that the midi
- thru facility works on all channels and all the time, not just when
- recording and playing. This has involved considerable changes to the
- program. THE FACILITY APPEARS TO WORK, BUT AT THIS STAGE, CAN'T BE
- GUARANTEED TO WORK CORRECTLY. If you have problems with this facility,
- switch it off and contact Clares with the details of the problem.
-
-
- N.B This facility appear to work only when not in Play/Record mode. When in
- Play/Record mode and not actually playing or recording, the midi thru
- doesn't seem to work. If you press PLAY or RECORD or go to edit mode or
- cut/paste mode, the midi thru seems to work correctly.
-
- THE EXPERIMENTAL MIDI THRU FEATURE IS OFF BY DEFAULT. USE THE SET UP WINDOW
