- Introduction
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~ This program is designed to allow easy installation of desktop
- backdrops. Normally this is done by dragging a sprite file onto the
- Pinboard, then selecting the "Make Backdrop" option from the Pinboard menu.
- This is fine for occasional use, but gets tedious if you regularly want to
- change backdrops. To make life easier, I have written the BackTool
- utilities.
-
- Usage
- ~~~~~ BackTool is a Wimp application which will install itself on the icon
- bar when run. It can be used in two ways:
- by dragging a sprite file onto its icon
- by double-clicking on a file in a designated Backdrops directory.
-
- You drag a directory onto the BackTool icon to select it as the Backdrops
- directory. Clicking with Select on the icon will open a viewer on the
- Backdrops directory.
-
- The Backdrops directory is identified by an environment variable called
- "BackDrop$Dir". When BackTool spots a sprite file being double-clicked on
- it will check to see if it is in this directory. If it is, it will be loaded
- as a backdrop. This variable could be set in a boot file (see below).
-
- When you cause BackTool to install a backdrop by one of these means, it
- has to decide which of the Pinboard's display modes to use. In order to do
- this, it looks at the name of the first sprite in the file. If the name is
- "centre", "tile" or "scale" then the appropriate method will be used.
- Otherwise, a small window will pop up and allow you to choose the right
- method.
-
- If you have a collection of backdrops which you regularly use, it's probably
- a good idea to change the names of the sprites in this way; do so by
- dragging the file onto !Paint, and choosing the Rename option for the sprite
- in question, entering the new name as "centre", "tile" or "scale".
-
- NB: Double-clicking on files in the Backdrops directory will only load them
- as backdrops if BackTool is loaded *before* any other programs which
- respond to double-clicks on sprites, eg. !Paint.
-
- Desktop boot files
- ~~~~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~~ BackTool is aware of RISC OS 3's "Desktop Boot"
- facility. If a Desktop Boot file is created while BackTool is running it
- will add lines to set BackDrop$Dir and run itself.
-
- Previous BackTools
- ~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ This program does not completely replace the original
- BackTool (version 1.0x). BackTool 2 is different in that it is not a module
- task, and it provides the iconbar icon and its associated facilities. If you
- have no need for these, the old BackTool may do just as well.
-
- Copyright
- ~~~~~~~~~ This program is Public Domain. You may do anything you want with
- it as long as you don't make a profit out of it, claim you wrote it, or
- distribute it in an altered form without my permission.
-
- Thanks
- ~~~~~~ To Storm-Eye for upstaging the first version of BackTool and thus
- causing me to write this extremely useful sequel, which offers the
- functionality of both my earlier program and his, in a compact form.
