  22. Text processing systems are now in heavy use in many companies
  23. to format documents.
  24. With many documents stored
  25. on line, it has become possible to use computers
  26. to study writing style itself and to help writers
  27. produce better written and more readable prose.
  28. The system of programs described here is an initial step
  29. toward such help.
  30. It includes programs and a data base designed
  31. to produce a stylistic profile of writing at the word and
  32. sentence level.
  33. The system measures read\%ability, sentence and word length,
  34. sentence type, word usage, and sentence openers.
  35. It also locates common examples of wordy phrasing and bad diction.
  36. The system is useful for evaluating a document's style,
  37. locating sentences that may be difficult to read or
  38. excessively wordy, and determining
  39. a particular writer's style over several documents.
