-
- 1) When will the other disk sets be released?
-
- I am hoping to release GCC and the Network disk sets this weekend
- (11/5/96). However, the others will be a little while, due to
- technical difficulties [my main 1GB drive needs a service].
-
- 2) Is hardware xxx supported?
-
- As of 11/5/96, in the 1.3.35 kernel in the distribution, only the
- ether3 and acorn scsi drivers were compiled in. However, in total,
- I have drivers for the following:
-
- Description State
- Network cards
- -------------
- + Acorn Ether1 Tested ok
- + Ant Ether3 Tested ok
-
- SCSI cards
- ----------
- + Acorn SCSI 3 Tested ok, not fully
- implemented
- + Cumana 8-bit Written for 1.1.59,
- not tested on 1.3.35
-
- Serial cards
- ------------
- + Atomwide 1, 2, 3 port high Only one port at a time
- speed tested.
-
- Internal hardware
- -----------------
- + up to 2 IDE drives
- + A5000 serial port
- + A5000 parrallel port
- + A5000 floppy drive
- + Keyboard, mouse, console
- + A3/4/5xx floppy drive Development state
- + A3/4/5xx MFM hard drives Development state
-
- 3) Why doesn't my floppy drive work?
-
- It would appear that some A5000's were shipped with the floppy
- drive cable (34-Way IDC) connected to the 'wrong' connector on
- the motherboard. Exactly why this is, I don't know. However,
- if you turn the computer off, and plug the drive into the left
- hand (as you look at the front of the computer) connector, next
- to the IDE drive. This should enable it to work.
-
- 4) What is meant by 'A5000 and compatible' ?
-
- Linux is hardware specific - it needs to know how to control the
- hardware in your machine. Examples are the floppy drivers, and
- ide drivers.
-
- This means that if you have an A3000 and upgrade it to ARM3,
- RiscOS 3.11 and IDE hard disk, it isn't up to the A5000
- specification, and Linux will not run on it.
-
- There is however work on a port of Linux that runs on the older
- machines.
-
- 5) Where is the 'Bits' module that !Linux asks for?
-
- Unfortunately, I have been unable to contact the author of the
- Bits module, and so can't distribute this incredibly useful
- module with the ARM Linux distribution.
-
- However, there are two solutions to this problem:
- a) You can obtain the module by ftp from the hensa archive
- (micros.hensa.ac.uk) or elsewhere in the !Virtual and
- !Memphis applications.
-
- b) You can comment out '|' the relevent lines in !Linux.!Run
- since it is only there to print up a nice message if you
- haven't configured it first...
-
- The first solution is recommended though.
-
- If the author of the Bits module reads this, or anyone can get in
- contact with him, please mail me!!!
