- Chinese for RiscOs - Version 1.02
- _____________________________________________________________________________
-
- Chinese for RISCOS has now been set up as a single package. At the moment it
- only consists of two applications - a flashcard tuition program and a text
- reader but hopefully new applications will be added in future.
-
- One possibility is a more sophisticated tuition program which would keep a
- record of the characters and phrases known and give an indication of
- progress. (I would certainly like something along these lines this because
- I've no idea how many characters I know). The main problem with this is
- compiling the appropriate databases which is a lot of work. I would also like
- to develop !CCR into a proper Chinese editor along the lines of the various
- Shareware Word Processors which are available for the PC. It would be nice to
- have some sort of translation capabilities too but again this would involve
- building some sort of dictionary. It is possible to use !FlashCard as it
- stands and Steve Simpson's `PCR' files to look up words (see !FlashCard
- ReadMe files).
-
- I still haven't decided what sort of encoding to use - big5 is probably
- better in the long term because it provides more characters and there *are*
- simplified bitmaps available for it as well. I need to find out for sure
- which ones can be freely distributed though.
-
- Version 1.02
- -------------------
- Ooops! Sorry! I forgot to include the card files in V1.01.
- Thanks to Thomas Marx for mailing me to point this out.
-
- Version 1.01
- --------------------
-
- Alterations have been made to !FlashCard to prevent redrawing of the text
- icon borders and the associated flickering which was really bugging me.
-
- !CCR:
- -----
-
- Improved (ie. hopefully faster) redraws. It's still a bit slow even with an
- ARM3 but there is a lot of plotting involved.
-
- The `messy blob' character problem has been solved!
-
- A PD pinyin dictionary has now been added so you can find out what a
- character is by clicking SELECT over it. This pops up a box with the
- appropriate pinyin pronunciation(s). These can then be used to look up the
- English (or whatever) meaning in a conventional dictionary (ie a paper one).
- A lot of dictionaries include pinyin and this is easier for us latin alphabet
- types than counting the strokes in the character :-).
-
- Latin text is now displayed, though not very well. Previously it was just
- ignored.
- A more appropriate Sprite (kan4 - to look at, read).
