  7. This readme file contains important information about this
  8. PowerAlbum release.  It includes a list of new features,
  9. restrictions, and solutions to problems you may encounter.

  25. 1. Installation
  26. ---------------
  27.   If you plan on adding Video files to your albums, you must first
  28.   run Setup on the enclosed CD-ROM.  This will install the
  29.   Microsoft Video for Windows drivers onto your system so that
  30.   they may be used by PowerAlbum.

  34. 2. New and Improved Features
  35. ----------------------------
  36.   This release contains a substantial amount of new functionality.
  37.  
  38.     a.  NOTEBOOK STYLES.
  39.         There are 3 notebook styles form which to choose from. See
  40.         the "Options|Styles" menu item for a selection.
  41.  
  42.     b.  MULTIMEDIA SUPPORT.
  43.         You can now add Sound (WAV) and Video (AVI) files to your
  44.         albums.  If you plan on adding and/or playing video files,
  45.         you must first install the Microsoft Video Drivers by
  46.         running Setup on the enclosed CD-ROM.  You must have a
  47.         sound card properly installed on your system in order to
  48.         play sound files.

  50.     c.  PLAY SOUNDS AND DISPLAY PICTURES SIMULTANEOUSLY.
  51.         Select the "Picture|Assign sounds to pictures" or
  52.         "Picture|Assign pictures to sounds" menu items to
  53.         associate pictures and sounds.

  55.     d.  REMOVABLE MEDIA SUPPORT.
  56.         When adding pictures from removable media (e.g. CD-ROMs,
  57.         floppy disks, etc.), you can tell PowerAlbum the name of
  58.         the disk and it will prompt you for that disk later.

  60.     e.  AUTOMATIC ALBUM SCANNING.
  61.         Have PowerAlbum flip through it's pages and display the
  62.         entire album contents for you without touching a single
  63.         key.  You can select the types of albums items to display
  64.         (i.e. pictures, videos) and for the number of seconds.

  66.     f.  EXPORT PICTURES TO NEW FORMATS.
  67.         You can now convert your pictures to other file formats.
  68.         See the Picture Export Restrictions section for a list of
  69.         restrictions.

  71.     g.  IMPROVED THUMBNAILS.
  72.         Select Options|Preferences to change the number of colors
  73.         used.  PowerAlbum will support video cards which can 
  74.         display 16, 256, 65536, and 16 million colors.  If you
  75.         have existing albums, you must rebuild the thumbnails in
  76.         order to get the improved thumbnails.

  78.     h.  CREATE CATEGORIES AUTOMATICALLY.
  79.         You can now have PowerAlbum scan your hard disk and create
  80.         category names for you.  The category names can be based
  81.         on the type of file or the path it originated from.

  83.     i.  COPY PATHS TO CLIPBOARD.
  84.         You can now copy a picture or sound file path (or the
  85.         picture) to the clipboard as text for pasting into another
  86.         application's edit control.

  90. 3. Information for Calendar Creator Users
  91. -----------------------------------------
  92.   PowerAlbum is fully compatible with versions 2.00 and above of
  93.   Calendar Creator for Windows.  However, in order to access many
  94.   of the new features.  You must run PowerAlbum as a standalone
  95.   product.  This is because the menu bar is not available while
  96.   being run from within Calendar Creator.
  97.  
  98.   For example, if you wish to use a new notebook style, load your
  99.   album from the standalone version of PowerAlbum, change the
  100.   style and then save the album.  The next time you access it
  101.   from Calendar Creator, your album will be displayed in the new 
  102.   notebook style.

  105.   PowerAlbum 2.0 can also work with albums from Calendar Creator
  106.   for Windows, version 1.00.  However, to use these albums, it
  107.   is necessary to open a New album in PowerAlbum 2.0 and Merge
  108.   the old album into the new one.

  111. 4.  Picture Export Restrictions
  112. -------------------------------
  113.   The following limitations apply to Exporting Pictures in
  114.   PowerAlbum:
  115.  
  116.     1)  No vector image can be exported to a JPG.
  117.     2)  No JPG can be exported to a vector.           
  118.     3)  No PCD can be exported to another raster format. 
  119.  
  120.   We anticipate that these restrictions will not exist in a
  121.   future release.

  125. 5.  Video Import and Playing Problems
  126. -------------------------------------
  127.   If you cannot add or play video files, try the following:
  128.  
  129.   a) Make sure you have installed the Video For Windows Runtime
  130.      drivers as described in the Installation section above.
  131.  
  132.   b) If you are recieving error message #675, select File|Run
  133.      from the Program Manager and enter "REGEDIT".  Once REGEDIT
  134.      is running, select File|Merge Registration File... menu item
  135.      and select the VFW.REG file in your program directory.

  137.      Exit Windows, and try again.

  141. 6.  STB Pegasus VLB Board Problem
  142. ----------------------------------
  143.   If you experience problems changing Preferences and immediately
  144.   changing the Style to Large thumbnails, try the following:
  145.  
  146.   a) Change Preferences.
  147.  
  148.   b) Change Style to either Small or Medium thumbnails.  (This is
  149.      an interim step.)

  151.   c) Change Style to Large thumbnails.

  155. 7.  Changing CD-ROM Drive Letter
  156. --------------------------------
  157.   If your hardware configuration changes, resulting in a new ID
  158.   letter for your CD-ROM drive, you will have to reinstall the
  159.   multimedia albums.  Use the Custom Install option on the 
  160.   CD-ROM provided with this software.  Select the Multimedia File
  161.   option and reslect the albums to be installed.  This will reset
  162.   the CD-ROM drive ID letter; the first time you open PowerAlbum,
  163.   the albums will be processed and changed to point to the new 
  164.   drive letter to access your multimedia picture files.
