Katherine Pettit is a mixed media artist born in Philadelphia in 1974. She studied Fine Arts and Psychology at Simon Fraser University, receiving her undergraduate degree in 1997.
Scope and content
The collection consists of 224 colour photoprints, representing the subject matter of tourist snapshots of African wildlife; the photographs were used as research for Pettit's graduation project as an artist entitled "The Cultural Politics of Photographic Representation." The photoprints were taken in 1996, by the artist on a trip to Kenya.
Note
Much of my work has addressed the anthropological colonialist oppressive practices that implicate the photograph as archive. My intention for Artropolis '97 is to archive my process, a moment in time, rather than a finished work with a defined, and thus limited meaning.
