Gusti Lina is an interdisciplinary artist born in Amsterdam in 1943. She studied at the West Surrey College of Art and Design, Farnham, England, where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree with Honors in 1988.
Scope and content
The work consists of a silver gelatin print from 1995, 1 x 2 cm, matted, and circa 1 L of sand from Vancouver Bay in a document box. The photograph is from a series of photo based work, titled "...and she borrowed her shadow, then gave it back to the sea" which took as its subject shadow and an area of beach and tidal flats along southern shore of Vancouver Bay for a series produced during 1994-1996.

The artist stated that "Photography and sand have played an important part in my work, but photography was initially only used to record work that because of its nature was very ephemeral. Shooting my shadow on the beach and tidal flats on the southern shore of Vancouver Bay was a natural progression resulting from a longstanding fascination with pattern and the ambiguous way in which it multiplies and diversifies, but also with the Zen idea of emptiness, of 'mu,' the void or vacuum .... These ideas have shaped my shadows. They owe more to the pots of Japan, a weaver in the far north of Nigeria, and a snippet of archaic language in Sweden than to any technical know-how of photography."
