  21.    This diskette contains drivers and programs for Windows 3.1 users who
  22.    have a Sound Blaster Pro or Sound Blaster Pro Basic.

  24.    If you obtained the drivers and programs mentioned in this file as a ZIP
  25.    file from a bulletin board, please unzip the contents into a diskette

  51. III. Installing the drivers
  52. ---------------------------
  53.  
  54.    1. Start Windows v3.1.
  55.  
  56.    2. Open the Control Panel and select the Drivers icon.
  57.  
  58.    3. You should have the following driver names in the Installed Drivers
  59.       list:
  60.  
  61.             MIDI Mapper
  62.             Timer
  63.             [MCI] CD Audio          ;this is only for owners of CD-ROM drives
  64.             [MCI] MIDI Sequencer
  65.             [MCI] Sound
  66.  
  67.       If you have other drivers installed, please remove them with the
  68.       REMOVE button and restart Windows before continuing.  If any of these
  69.       drivers are not listed, please add them before continuing.  (See your
  70.       Windows manual for details on adding these drivers.)  Make sure you
  71.       restart Windows after making changes to the driver list.
  72.    
  73.    4. Click on the ADD button.
  74.  
  75.    5. Select Unlisted or Updated driver and click on OK.
  76.  
  77.    6. Insert the floppy containing the drivers.
  78.  
  79.    7. Type in the drive letter of the floppy drive containing the driver disk.
  80.  
  81.    8. Select Sound Blaster Pro Auxiliary Audio and click on OK.
  82.  
  83.    9. Windows will prompt you for the Sound Blaster I/O address.  The default
  84.       I/O address is 220H.  If you have changed the jumper on your card to
  85.       240H, then select 240H.
  86.  
  87.   10. Windows will ask if you want to restart your system.  Click on
  88.       DON'T RESTART, then repeat steps 4, 5, 6, and 7.
  89.  
  90.   WARNING! - Steps 11 and 12 will OVERWRITE your existing MIDIMAP.CFG
  91.              configuration.  If you want to keep your existing configuration,
  92.              click on CANCEL and make a copy of MIDIMAP.CFG before continuing
  93.              the installation process.
  94.  
  95.   11. Select Sound Blaster Pro MIDI Synthesizer and click on OK.
  96.  
  97.   12. Windows will ask if you want to use the current MIDIMAP.CFG
  98.       or install the new MIDIMAP.CFG - Select NEW and continue on.
  99.  
  100.   13. Windows will prompt you for the Sound Blaster I/O address.
  101.       Repeat the instructions in step 9.
  102.  
  103.   14. Windows will ask if you want to restart your system.  Click on
  104.       DO NOT RESTART, then repeat steps 4, 5, 6, and 7.
  105.  
  106.   15. Select Sound Blaster Pro Wave and MIDI and click on OK.
  107.  
  108.   16. Windows will prompt you for the Sound Blaster I/O address, Interrupt, and
  109.       DMA channel. Choose the settings your card is set to and continue on.
  110.  
  111.   17. Windows will ask if you want to restart your system.  Click on
  112.       RESTART.  Windows will then restart.
  113.  
  114.   18. Two additional Windows applications are provided.  They are MMJBOX.EXE and
  115.       MMCBOX.EXE, please copy them into your Windows directory.
  116.  
  117. IV. What to do if the drivers don't install correctly
  118. -----------------------------------------------------
  119.  
  120.    If you are having problems installing the drivers, here are some things to
  121.    check before you call Technical Support.  Also, be sure to read the
  122.    "Important Notes" section below.
  123.  
  124. ** 1. If you installed Windows 3.1 using the "Express Installation,"  Windows
  125.       scanned your hard disk for programs to be installed.  As a result, older
  126.  
  127.       versions of the Chatterbox, Jukebox, and Mixer were installed if they
  128.       were on your hard disk at the time of installation.  Please remove these
  129.       icons.  To do this, click on the icon once to select it, then press the
  130.       delete key.  Windows will ask you for confirmation.  Repeat for each icon.
  131.  
  132.    2. Check the size and date of all the driver files in the Windows SYSTEM
  133.       directory against the listing in the section "Diskette Contents".  Make
  134.       sure that the correct drivers have been copied to your hard disk.
  135.  
  136.    3. Open the Driver applet in Control panel.  You should at least have the
  137.       following driver names in the Installed Drivers list:
  138.  
  139.             Creative Sound Blaster Pro Auxiliary Audio
  140.             Creative Sound Blaster Pro MIDI Synthesizer
  141.             Creative Sound Blaster Pro Wave and MIDI
  142.             MIDI Mapper
  143.             Timer
  144.             [MCI] CD Audio          ;this is only for owners of CD-ROM drives
  145.             [MCI] MIDI Sequencer
  146.             [MCI] Sound
  147.  
  148.       If one or more of these drivers do not exist, you must install the
  149.       driver(s) using the Driver applet in Control Panel (See the Windows
  150.       manual for more details).
  151.  
  152.    4. Check your SYSTEM.INI by choosing RUN from the File menu of the Program
  153.       Manager, and typing SYSEDIT in the command line box.  Examine the
  154.       [drivers] and [sndblst.drv] sections.  They should look something like
  155.       this:

  170.    5. If Windows refuses to install a device driver or you get the error
  171.       message "Device not found" when playing a Wave or MIDI file or a
  172.       CD, be sure you have the following settings in the [mci] section of
  173.       SYSTEM.INI
  174.  
  175.               [mci]
  176.               WaveAudio=mciwave.drv
  177.               Sequencer=mciseq.drv
  178.               CDAudio=mcicda.drv    ;this is only for owners of CD-ROM drives
  179.  
  180.       If one or more of these do not exist, you must install the driver(s)
  181.       using the Driver applet in Control Panel (See the Windows manual for
  182.       instructions).  Do not type in the entries into the SYSTEM.INI because
  183.       the files have to be installed into your SYSTEM directory by Windows.

  186. V. If you upgraded from Windows 3.0 to Windows 3.1
  187. --------------------------------------------------
  188.  
  189.    If you upgraded an existing copy of Windows 3.0 or Windows 3.0 with
  190.    Multimedia Extensions to Windows 3.1, here are some special notes to
  191.    consider.
  192.  
  193.    1. If you have a line which reads "device=vsbd.386" in the [386Enh] section
  194.       of SYSTEM.INI, please delete it.  This is an old driver which has been
  195.       replaced by VSBPD.386.  The new driver will not work correctly until this
  196.       line is removed.
  197.  
  198.    2. Delete the file SBPMIXER.CPL in the Windows SYSTEM directory.  It is no
  199.       longer being supported.  The new SBPMIXER.EXE is now used instead and is
  200.       loaded automatically when you install the Sound Blaster drivers.
  201.  
  202.    3. After installing Windows 3.1, verify that the latest SBPMIXER.EXE,
  203.       MMCBOX.EXE, MMJBOX.EXE, SBP2FM.DRV, SBPAUX.DRV and SBPSND.DRV have been
  204.       copied to your hard disk.  Check the size and date of these files against
  205.       the listing in the section "Diskette Contents".  You can delete any older
  206.       versions that you find in your system.

  209. VI. Important notes
  210. -------------------

  215.    1. The drivers found in the file CREATE.EXE on Microsoft's BBS and in the
  216.       Microsoft Forum on CompuServe are not the latest drivers for Windows 3.1
  217.       and may not work properly.  Please do not use them.
  218.  
  219.    2. The drivers that are included with the Windows 3.1 Resource Kit are not
  220.       the lastest drivers and may not work properly.  Please do not use them.
  221.  
  222.    3. We are including drivers that make use of Device Virtualization.  These
  223.       drivers will allow DOS Apps that use the Sound Blaster to run in Enhanced
  224.       Mode.
  225.  
  226.       Please make sure that a line reading "device=vsbpd.386" exists under the
  227.       [386Enh] section in your SYSTEM.INI.  If you have a line which reads
  228.       "device=vsbd.386", please delete it.  Also, make sure the file VSBPD.386
  229.       is in your Windows SYSTEM directory.  If it is not, copy it from the
  230.       Drivers Disk.
  231.  
  232.    4. The Windows 3.1 drivers can now be used in both Windows 3.0 with
  233.       Multimedia extensions as well as Windows 3.1.  They will check the
  234.       Windows version and use the correct Sound Blaster section name to access
  235.       the settings in the SYSTEM.INI.
  236.  
  237.    5. A MIDI-MAP has been created to make use of the SBP2FM.DRV, please use the
  238.       MIDI MAPPER icon under Control Panel to customize it to your requirements.
  239.  
  240.       Under Windows 3.1, MIDI channel 10 is referenced as the drum channel.
  241.       If you are having problems with the FM synth not sounding "right", try
  242.       modifying the configuration with the MIDI Mapper.
  243.
