- CHANGING THE WINDOWS 3 OPENING TITLE SCREEN
-
- The original title screen supplied with Windows 3 is pretty
- dull. That's the screen which has "Microsoft" across the top in
- dull blue on a dull blue background.
-
- However, there is a way to change this screen to use the one
- supplied in this archive or, indeed, any other .RLE file (that
- stands for "run length encoded"). Such files are graphics in a
- compressed format.
-
- Two comments before starting:
-
- a. The .RLE file in this archive is suitable for VGA systems
- only.
-
- b. Do not attempt to change the screen on a network workstation
- without the active support of the network supervisor. The
- method for making the change is slightly different from that
- described here.
-
- First make a copy of the WIN.COM file in your WINDOWS directory
- (for the rest of this note that will be assumed to be the
- default C:\WINDOWS). Make a copy of the file VGALOGO.RLE file in
- the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.
-
- Copy the .RLE file which is to be used to the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
- directory with the filename VGALOGO.RLE.
-
- Change directory to C:\WINDOWS and run the SETUP program.
-
- When the System Information screen is displayed move the cursor to the
- "Display" line (this should read VGA) and press <ENTER>.
-
- Now scroll down the list of monitor types until the cursor bar
- rests on VGA and press <ENTER> again. (Yes, I know it sounds
- ridiculous to select the same monitor type again but that's how
- it works!).
-
- Press <ENTER> one more time to complete the setup procedure.
-
- The new .RLE graphic will replace the original one in the
- WIN.COM file.
-
- This technique can be used as often as desired to change WIN.COM
- to display new opening title screens.
