  1. CHANGING THE WINDOWS 3 OPENING TITLE SCREEN
  2.  
  3. The original title screen supplied with Windows 3 is pretty
  4. dull. That's the screen which has "Microsoft" across the top in
  5. dull blue on a dull blue background.
  6.  
  7. However, there is a way to change this screen to use the one
  8. supplied in this archive or, indeed, any other .RLE file (that
  9. stands for "run length encoded"). Such files are graphics in a
  10. compressed format.
  11.  
  12. Two comments before starting:
  13.  
  14.   a. The .RLE file in this archive is suitable for VGA systems
  15.      only.
  16.  
  17.   b. Do not attempt to change the screen on a network workstation
  18.      without the active support of the network supervisor. The
  19.      method for making the change is slightly different from that
  20.      described here.
  21.  
  22. First make a copy of the WIN.COM file in your WINDOWS directory
  23. (for the rest of this note that will be assumed to be the
  24. default C:\WINDOWS). Make a copy of the file VGALOGO.RLE file in
  25. the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.
  26.  
  27. Copy the .RLE file which is to be used to the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
  28. directory with the filename VGALOGO.RLE.
  29.  
  30. Change directory to C:\WINDOWS and run the SETUP program.
  31.  
  32. When the System Information screen is displayed move the cursor to the
  33. "Display" line (this should read VGA) and press <ENTER>.
  34.  
  35. Now scroll down the list of monitor types until the cursor bar
  36. rests on VGA and press <ENTER> again. (Yes, I know it sounds
  37. ridiculous to select the same monitor type again but that's how
  38. it works!).

  40. Press <ENTER> one more time to complete the setup procedure.

  42. The new .RLE graphic will replace the original one in the
  43. WIN.COM file.
  44.  
  45. This technique can be used as often as desired to change WIN.COM
  46. to display new opening title screens.
