  5. INTRODUCTION
  6. ------------

  8. PICTURES ABC is a children's education program running under Microsoft 
  9. Windows 3.0.  It is designed for children from 2 to 6.  The purpose of 
  10. the program is to teach children the association between alphabets and 
  11. words through the usage of pictures and voice.
  12.  
  13. This distribution version of PICTURES ABC is functionally identical to the
  14. registered version of PICTURES ABC.  However, it only contains a small 
  15. sample of the pictures available in the registered version.  All of the
  16. sample pictures are in the default animal category, and they should give
  17. you a taste of how you can teach and enjoy this program with your children.
  18. If you find this program to be a fun and effective teaching tool, please
  19. register to obtain the remaining 91 pictures for your children.

  21. You are welcome to share this distribution version of PICTURES ABC with
  22. your friends provided you do not alter the contents of this program.  Only
  23. the distribution version of PICTURES ABC can be treated as public domain
  24. software.  You may not distribute the registered version of PICTURES ABC.

  29. The distribution version of PICTURES ABC contains the following files

  31.         PICABC.EXE  -  the main executable
  32.         PICABC.TXT  -  this readme file
  33.         DOVOICE.DLL -  PC speaker sound DLL
  34.         A.SPK       -  PC speaker voice file
  35.  
  36. All of the above files should be located in the same sub-directory for 
  37. the program to operate properly.

  39. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  40. -------------------

  42. Since PICTURES ABC operates under Microsoft Windows 3.0 environment,
  43. the following system configuration is recommended for PICTURES ABC
  44. to run effectively.
  45.  
  46.     - PC/AT 286, 386, 486, or better computer operating
  47.       at speed greater than 10 MHz
  48.  
  49.     - Microsoft Windows 3.0 or later operating environment
  50.  
  51.     - Mouse pointing device
  52.  
  53.     - EGA, VGA, and XGA display system
  54.  
  55. INSTALLATION
  56. ------------
  57.  
  58. To install PICTURES ABC, just copy the files stated in the FILE LIST 
  59. paragraph above into a sub-directory of your choice.  Then, you should
  60. activate the Microsoft Windows 3.0 environment.  Next, select the 
  61. "RUN" option under the "file" menu item of your Windows 3.0 Program 
  62. Manager.  This will result a dialog box appears on your screen.  Under
  63. the "Command Line" input, type in the directory path of PICTURES ABC 
  64. and PICABC.EXE to execute the program.
  65.  
  66. If you want to permanently install PICTURES ABC in your Program 
  67. Manager, please refer to Windows 3.0 User's manual for the procedures
  68. to adding icons within Program Manager.
  69.  
  70. PROGRAM OPERATION
  71. -----------------

  73. Upon activating PICTURES ABC,  it will undergo an initialization process 
  74. for a period of 15 seconds.  During this time, a message box will be 
  75. displayed on the screen, and the mouse will be disabled.  When the mouse 
  76. is re-enabled, you may click on the "OK" bottom to enter the main program.
  77.  
  78. After initialization, PICTURES ABC displays the twenty six alphabets with 
  79. four selection categories.  The categories are:  animals, foods, people, 
  80. and things.  Each category is identified by a graphic symbol displayed in 
  81. the blue rectangular area.  The default category is animals.  You may 
  82. select the category by clicking the mouse on the category symbol, or use 
  83. the left and right arrow keys to high-lite the desired category symbol.  
  84. However, only the animals category contains pictures and voice in the
  85. distribution version.

  87. After the selection has been made, you may start to enter any one of the
  88. twenty six alphabets.  This can be done by either pressing the letters on 
  89. the keyboard or using the mouse to click on the alphabet button displayed 
  90. on the screen.  When an alphabet is entered, a picture will come up with 
  91. the word associated with the alphabet written on top of the picture.  As
  92. the picture appears on the screen, the PC speaker will generate the voice 
  93. to pronounce the word.  Entering any other alphabet will cause a new picture
  94. to appear and the old picture to disappear.  Clicking on the picture or 
  95. pressing any non alphabetic key will make the current picture disappear.   
  96. This process may be repeated until you wish to terminate the program.

  98. For the ABC PICTURES distribution version, only the first thirteen 
  99. alphabets of the animal category generate pictures and voice.  All 
  100. other will generate registration messages.
  101.  
  102. FUTURE FEATURES
  103. ---------------
  104.  
  105. PICTURES ABC is capable of incorporating additional categories to the
  106. basic four categories on the current version.  If you like to have 
  107. your child learning a particular category of words, we welcome your
  108. suggestion.  Just put the category name and words associate with 
  109. the category in the registration form, we will consider it in the
  110. expansion kit of PICTURES ABC.

  112. Also, if you have other ideas and suggestion to PICTURES ABC, we also
  113. like to hear it.  Again, please write them down in the registration
  114. form, and we will consider it as future enhancement of PICTURES ABC.

  119. The distribution version of PICTURES ABC is a freeware.  It serves as 
  120. a demonstration for the registered version of PICTURES ABC.  However, 
  121. it is copyrighted material, and it is protected by the copyright laws
  122. of the United States.  You may not alter, decompile, nor disassemble
  123. the program for any purpose.
