  3.                        Experience of a Shareware Author

  6.          The following is a message from Frank Bell, author of NEWKEY,
  7.          a shareware keyboard macro program that was awarded "Editor's
  8.          Choice" in a comparative review in PC Magazine against more
  9.          expensive commercial programs.

  12.          Over the years I have tried several different methods to
  13.          encourage user registration and none of them have made any
  14.          substantial difference, so I must admit to feeling that these
  15.          methods probably do not increase sales too much.

  17.          However, I have been using the 5-second delay screen [when
  18.          the user first loads the program] for over a year and have
  19.          received several orders with comments such as "ok, ok, I'll
  20.          register. Send me the version without the delay screen." so I
  21.          do feel that I am getting registrations that I would not have
  22.          gotten otherwise. I have never received any negative feedback
  23.          from someone who has not purchased, but I might have lost
  24.          some sales as a result of the delay too.

  26.          The purpose of the evaluation screen is to make integration
  27.          into daily computer operations annoying, but not so annoying
  28.          as to discourage evaluation. I also feel that it is a strong
  29.          incentive for business and consultants to purchase. I have
  30.          received many next day air orders from consultants and
  31.          businesses who have integrated Newkey into a system they are
  32.          delivering or demoing the next day and don't want the
  33.          evaluation screen coming up. Would these have been purchased
  34.          without the evaluation screen? Some perhaps, but not all.

  36.          I disagree with the statement that "if they're going to steal
  37.          your program, they're going to steal it, and if they're going
  38.          to pay for it, they're going to pay for it." There are lots
  39.          of people who want to do the right thing, but need a little
  40.          encouragement. Since I furnish the full manual and my product
  41.          requires little support, removing the evaluation screen is
  42.          the best practical benefit I can offer. This way the user can
  43.          feel virtuous and still get a practical benefit by
  44.          registering.
