- NOTE: TO INSTALL THE COMPUSERVE VERSION OF THE OS/2 PM PCL PRINTER DRIVER

- For best results, create a temporary directory on your hard drive
- and unzip this file in that directory. When installing, indicate
- the temporary directory. After the installation is complete, the
- directory can be deleted. However, there are two subdirectories
- which contain extra support files which you may wish to keep.

- In order to install the driver, it is necessary to join the Extended
- Attributes with the correct files. In order to do this, type the
- following command:

- The driver cannot be installed until this is done.

- The Hewlett-Packard PCL 5 Driver (Version 1.3.342) is supported with
- version 1.21, version 1.3 Standard Edition, version 1.3 Extended Edition,
- version 1.31, and version 2.0 of the OS/2 operating system. This driver
- supports the following Hewlett-Packard printers:

- LaserJet IIID
- LaserJet IIISi
- LaserJet IIIP

- LaserJet 500 Plus
- LaserJet Plus

- This driver also contains support for certain PCLIV clone printers.
- Hewlett-Packard does not support these clone printers. To obtain

- II. PRE-INSTALLATION
- ---------------------
-
- Before installing this new PCL 5 printer driver, check the following:
-
- NOTE:
- It is very important to delete the printer driver if your previous
- version of the PCL 5 printer driver is 1.31B or below. If you have
- this version and you install the new version of the driver, the
- result will be two PCL 5 printer drivers installed.
-
- 1. Have you installed a previous version of the HP PCL 5
- driver? If so, follow Steps A, B, C, and D, below.
-
- 2. Have any other printer drivers been installed that will
- NOT be used in OS/2? If so, follow Steps B, C, and D below.
-
- Note: The IBM 42XX printer driver is automatically
- installed with OS/2. If you do NOT have an IBM printer,
- be sure to delete it. Follow Steps B, C, and D below.
-
- Otherwise, skip to part III. Installation.
-
-
- STEP A. Delete unused or old printers:
-
- OS/2 v 1.21, 1.3X
-
- 1. Select the Print Manager. (printer icon)
- 2. Choose "Setup".
- 3. Choose "Printers".
-
- For each printer not needed: Highlight the printer;
- choose "Delete"; choose "Yes".
-
- 4. Choose "OK". You will be returned to the Print Manager.
-
-
- Delete associated printer queues:
-
- 1. Choose "Setup" at the Print Manager.
- 2. Choose "Queues".
- 3. For each printer deleted in Step B, delete its associated
- queue(s): Highlight the queue; choose "Delete"; choose "Yes".
-
- 4. Choose "OK". You will be returned the Print Manager.
- 5. Minimize the Print Manager.
-
-
- STEP B. Delete unused or old printer drivers
-
- 1. Change to the Group - Utilities.
- 2. Select the Control Panel.
- 3. Select the "Installation" menu.
- 4. Select "Delete printer drivers..."
- 5. For each printer deleted, delete its associated
- printer driver: Highlight the printer driver; choose "Delete";
- choose "Yes", choose "Yes".
-
- At this point, one of the following will happen:
-
- 5a) If the focus is returned to the Control Panel and there
- are no more printer drivers to be deleted, exit the Control
- Panel and proceed to part III. Installation.
-
- 5b) If the focus is returned to the Control Panel and there
- are more printer drivers to be deleted, repeat steps 3,
- 4, and 5 for each printer driver to be deleted.
-
- 5c) If a message appears: "The device driver has been deleted.
- Cannot delete the associated printer driver file because
- you have installed other printer device drivers from it.",
- choose "Cancel" and repeat steps 3, 4, and 5 for each
- printer driver to be deleted. It there are no other
- printer drivers to be deleted, exit the Control Panel,
- and proceed to part III. Installation.

- 5d) If a warning message appears: "Cannot delete the printer
- device driver because it is associated with one or more
- printers. Remove the printer associations, then retry.",
- choose "Cancel"; choose "Cancel"; choose "Cancel"; repeat
- steps A and B.
-
- 5e) If a warning message appears: "Cannot delete the printer
- driver because a program may be using the file, the file
- may be read-only or the disk may be write-protected",
- choose "Cancel"; choose "Cancel"; choose "Cancel"; shutdown
- the computer and repeat Step B.
-
- For OS/2 v 2.0
-
- 1. Refer to the Master Help Index. Click on the "Search Topics..." button
- and search for "delete printer driver". Follow the instructions
- under "Deleting (printer or plotter) device drivers" and "Deleting
- printer object".

- III. INSTALLATION
- -----------------
-
- 1. Modify CONFIG.SYS
-
- In your root directory check that the line
-
- IOPL=YES
-
- appears in the CONFIG.SYS file. If it does not, use an
- editor (such as the OS/2 System Editor) to add it anywhere in
- the file. To use the OS/2 System Editor change to Group - Main
- and select the OS/2 System Editor. If CONFIG.SYS is modified,
- it is necessary to reboot the system before continuing.
-
- OS/2 v 1.21, 1.3X - Using the Printer Installer
-
- If you are running OS/2 version 1.21, start the Printer
- Installer by changing to the Group - Utilities, and selecting
- Printer Installer.
-
- If you are running OS/2 version 1.3, start the Printer Installer
- by selecting the Print Manager, then selecting Setup, then
- Printer install...
-
- For more help on the Printer Installer, select the Help button
- or in the "Help Index", select the Printer Installer

- V. FONT INSTALLATION HINTS
- --------------------------
-
- This release of the HP PCL 5 Driver supports all resident printer
- fonts, as well as scalable and bitmapped external cartridge fonts and
- soft fonts.
-
- All HP font cartridges available at the time of this driver
- release (except for the HP A to Y cartridges, see "Cartridges" below)
- were installed by the Printer Installer and do not need to be
- installed with this driver's Font Installer.
-
- All soft fonts and disk-based scalable typefaces must be installed
- through this driver's Font Installer. Additionally the Font
- Installer must be used for any new cartridges that were not available
- when this driver was released.
-
- The LaserJet Font Installer is accessed from the Print Manager in OS/2
- versions 1.21 and 1.3X (Setup...Printers...Change...Printer Properties...
- Fonts...) and through the Print Object in OS/2 version 2.0 (Open the settings
- on the print object, then click with the right mouse button on the default
- driver, and select Open...Settings...Fonts) Use the Font Installer to
- install cartridges, soft fonts, and disk-based scalable typefaces
-
- Note: If you have cartridge fonts that were not included
- with this driver or scalable disk based typefaces
- that need to be installed, you will need the
- corresponding AutoFont Support files that were
- shipped with your HP font/typeface product to tell
- the driver about the specifics of your fonts.

- CARTRIDGES:
-
- To activate a cartridge that was installed by the Printer Installer,
- simply select its name from the "Active Cartridge" list box in the
- Printer Properties dialog box. You may select up to two(2) cartridges
- since there are only two cartridge slots in your printer.
-
- Those users who still require the use of HP's A to Y cartridges will
- find the needed metric information on this driver's diskette. Any of
- these cartridges can be installed by inserting the driver disk into
- drive A. Enter the Font Installer, and select A:\ATOZCART in the
- "New Font Directory". Click on "Open". Select the appropriate
- cartridge(s) and click on "Add". Click on "OK". Then you will need
- to activate the cartridge in the Active Cartridge list box of the
- Printer Properties dialog.
-
- To install a cartridge that was NOT installed by the Printer
- Installer or included on the driver diskette, insert the disk which
- contains the AutoFont Support Files into the disk drive, or run the
- AutoFont Installer ( must be run in a Dos Box ).
-
- Type the directory name containing the AutoFont Support files
- (e.g. C:\AUTOFONT or A:\). in the New Font Directory" box of the
- Font Installer. Select the cartridge name from the
- "New cartridge fonts" list box. Choose "Add".
-
- After you have installed cartridge font(s) using the Font Installer,
- they will appear in the Cartridge list box of the Printer Properties
- dialog box. From this dialog you can select up to two cartridges from
- the list. This tells the printer driver which cartridge(s) you have
- installed in your printer.
-
- Note: Please note that the HP Z1A cartridge is now simply
- called the MICROSOFT cartridge.
-
-
- SYMBOL SET SUPPORT FOR CARTRIDGES:
-
- The following symbol sets, if originally contained in a cartridge,
- are always automatically supported when a cartridge is installed:
-

- PC-8 (equivalent to code page 437)
- PC-8 D/N (equivalent to code page 437N)
- PC-850 (equivalent to code page 850)

- However, additional "extended" symbol sets, if originally
- contained in a cartridge, can be obtained. Symbol sets
- are considered "extended" if they are not contained in
- the list above. If "extended" symbols sets are desired,
- the corresponding AutoFont Support files that were shipped
- with your HP cartridge will be needed.
-
- To get "extended" symbol set support, follow these steps:
-
- 1. If you have not already done so, you must first run the
- AutoFont Support utility that was included with your HP
- cartridge. (This may be done in the DOS compatibility box,
- but if problems occur; boot your system with DOS and then
- try again.)
-
- 2. Enter the Font Installer.
-
- 3. Delete the cartridge (if previously installed) and type
- in the correct directory containing the AutoFont Support
- files (e.g. C:\AUTOFONT) in the "New Font Directory" box.
-
- 4. Click on "Open".
-
- 5. Check the "Extended symbol sets for cartridges" check box,
- and click on "Add".
-
- If the cartridge has symbol sets other than those listed
- above, a new dialog box will appear which allows you to
- select which typefaces and "extended" symbol sets should be
- installed.
-
- These fonts will be installed in addition to any fonts with
- the above automatically supported symbol sets.
-
- 6. After all desired typefaces and "extended" symbol sets have
- been selected, click on "OK".
-
-
- Note: Refer to your LaserJet printer user's manual for
- tables showing the exact location of characters
- within symbol sets. To print characters within
- "extended" symbol sets, locate the character code
- number of the symbol you want using the symbol set
- charts in your manual, hold down the [Alt] key,
- type in the ASCII character code using your computer's
- NUMERIC keypad, then release the [Alt] key (the screen
- character displayed will not necessarily match the
- printed character). It may be necessary to set the
- [NumLock] key in some applications.

- BITMAPPED SOFT FONTS:
-
- To install bitmapped soft fonts, simply type in the name of the
- directory containing the soft fonts (.SFP or .SFL files). Select the soft
- font names. Choose "Add".
-
-
- DISK-BASED SCALABLE TYPEFACES:
-
- All disk-based scalable typefaces are sold with corresponding
- AutoFont Support files. If you have not already done so, you must
- run the AutoFont Support Installation program (or Type Director 2.0)
- prior to installing the typefaces into this driver. (This may be
- done from the DOS compatibility box, but if problems occur; boot your
- computer in DOS and try again.)
-
- To install these typefaces, type the name of the directory containing
- the ready to download disk based scalable typefaces (.SFS files
- usually in the \TD\FONTS directory) in "New font directory". Select
- the typefaces under "New Soft Fonts". Choose "Add".
-
-
-
- SYMBOL SET SUPPORT FOR BITMAPPED SOFT FONTS AND SCALABLE TYPEFACES:
-
- Bitmapped soft fonts and disk-based scalable typefaces may be supported
- in ALL symbol sets. However, only one symbol set is supported per soft
- font or scalable typeface at any one time. For instance, if you needed
- the soft font, CG Century Schoolbook in both the Math-8 and PC 850 symbol
- sets, in would be necessary to install both fonts, therefore, creating
- two separate entries in the font installer.
-
- The one exception to the previous rule are unbound scalable typefaces.
- Unbound scalable typefaces are installed through the font installer
- the same as regular scalable typefaces, however, they are not bound to
- a particular symbol set. For instance, an entry for an unbound scalable
- typeface would appear as follows:
-
- CG Century Schoolbook Scalable (Unbound - P&L)

- Once unbound scalable typefaces have been installed through the
- font installer, the following symbol sets are automatically supported:
-
- Roman-8
- PC-850
- PC-8
- PC-8 Danish/Norwegian
- ECMA-94 Latin 1
- Desktop
- Windows
- Ventura International
- Ventura US
-
- Note that unbound scalable typefaces are only supported on the
- LaserJet IIIP. For more information regarding unbound scalable
- typefaces, refer to your HP Laserjet IIIP manual.

- LANDSCAPE FONTS:
-
- The LaserJet III, IIID, IIISi and IIIP printers have the ability to
- automatically rotate all fonts available to the printer (internal &
- external). For this reason, fonts are not differentiated with
- respect to orientation and are only displayed once in the Font
- Installer, even though they may be available in both portrait AND
- landscape versions.
-

- VI. TROUBLE-SHOOTING
- ---------------
-
- Listed below are some trouble-shooting tips which may be applicable to
- any problems encountered with version 1.3.342 of the Hewlett-Packard
- PCL 5 printer driver:
-
- 1. If during installation, it appears to have read the disk for
- only a moment and then returns to the Printer Installer or Install
- New Printer Driver screen, there are two probable causes:
-
- a) The Extended Attributes on your driver file have been corrupted.
- These attributes give information to the installer about
- other files which are needed by the .DRV file.
- If the disk you are installing from is a copy, try
- the originial. Otherwise, obtain a new driver and try again.
-
- b) The statement IOPL=YES cannot be found in the Config.sys file.
- Enter this line into your Config.Sys file and re-boot the system.
-
- 2. Serial Interface:
-
- This driver is only supported on serial ports 1 (COM1:)
- and port 2 (COM2:). You must have the com driver loaded after
- any mouse drivers in your config.sys file. For ISA or EISA computers,
- use DEVICE=C:\OS2\COM01.SYS, for microchannel use
- DEVICE=C:\OS2\COM02.SYS, or for OS/2 v 2.0 use DEVICE=C:\OS2\COM.SYS.
- (If you had to add this line, you will need to reboot before printing.)
- You must set the communication settings for your COM port in the OS/2
- Control Panel (on the utilities menu). Start the Control Panel.
- Select "Options". Select "Communications Port..." Select the port
- your printer is connected to. For "Baud rate" enter "9600". For
- "Word length" select "8". For "Parity" select "none". For "Stop
- bits" select "1". For "Handshake" select "Hardware". Choose "Set".
- Close the Control Panel. You must also select the serial interface
- setting on the control panel of your LaserJet. See your User's Guide
- for information on setting the interface.
-
- NOTE: The following ports are supported: LPT1, LPT2, LPT3,
- COM1, COM2, COM3
- 3. User Defined Forms:
-
- This item is very useful when printing with the Automatic Mixed
- option in the Job Properties.
-
- When printing with different sized papers (Letter, Legal, A4, ...)
- the form name must be selected in the Printer Properties dialog box
- or the print job will wait in the queue. This will give you the
- ability to queue up jobs for which you do not have the form in the
- printer yet.
-
- The User-defined Forms option allows a pre-defined paper size to be
- associated with a user-defined name. For instance, Letter size paper
- with a company logo could be named "Letter Head" and associated with
- Letter size paper. In this case, when printing with "Letter Head",
- the job will wait in the queue until "Letter Head" is selected in the
- Printer Properties dialog box.
-
- Therefore if you are printing over a network and using user-defined
- forms, it is nescessary to define the form name on both the client
- and server sides.
-
-
-
- 4. Novell NetWare printing
-
- Note: For OS/2 v 2.0 there is a new version of NetWare available.
- It is recommended to use this new version of Netware.
-
- Using the HP LaserJet III Family Presentations Manager
- Printer Driver version 1.3.342 on Novell NetWare Networks
-
- HP LaserJet III printer driver testing has been conducted
- from an OS/2 workstation to a shared printer on a Novell NetWare
- 386 version 3.10 network.
-
- Details about the testing workstation configuration are:
- HP Vectra RS/20C
- VGA Adapter, Microsoft serial Mouse
- 8 Mbytes RAM
- Hewlett-Packard OS/2 version 1.21
- Hewlett-Packard Ethertwist 16 network adapter (10BaseT)
- Novell NetWare OS/2 requester for OS/2 1.2
-
- Details about the testing server configuration are:
- HP Vectra 486 dedicated file/print server
- 10 Mbytes RAM
- Large hard disk
- Hewlett-Packard Ethertwist network adapter (10BaseT)
- Novell NetWare 386 version 3.10
- HP LaserJet IIIP connected to LPT1 on the server

- Setup
-
- The printer setup should be established using NetWare's
- utility called PCONSOLE. This can be verified by printing from
- a command line or DOS workstation. Once the print server
- setup is complete the workstation setup should be done.
-
- Workstation setup
- The setup and network file server connection should already be
- established. These steps also assume that no network printer
- connection to HP LaserJet III family printers from the workstation
- exists.
-
- You must use the Printer Installer (PMPRINST.EXE) to installer the
- HP LaserJet III family printer driver. Follow the instructions in
- this file to install the printer driver. Once the driver installation
- is complete, you must remove your local print queue to print to a
- NetWare shared printer. This is done by going into the
- Print Manager, select the Setup menu bar option, and click on Queues.
- Highlight the newly installed print queue for your LaserJet III model,
- then click the Delete key. Answer Yes to the question which appears on
- your screen.
-
- The local print queue is now removed. You can verify that the printer
- is still installed by selecting Setup on the Print Manager menu bar
- and clicking on printer. Your newly installed printer should show
- up here. If you need to check the settings or install fonts you
- can do so at this time.
-
- Now you are ready to associate your workstation to the shared NetWare
- printer. This is done with the NetWare Capture command. Capture is
- provided as part of the NetWare OS/2 Requester. To "capture" the
- correct NetWare print queue, please consult your NetWare documentation
- or ask your lan administrator. Once Capture has been successfully run
- to connect your HP LaserJet III printer you are now ready to print.

- Presentations Manager Application Printing
-
- Most Presentation Manager(PM) applications will print to a NetWare
- connected printer. Many PM applications will not print to an HP
- LaserJet III printer unless there is a local print queue. As a result,
- they also will not print to a NetWare printer that is shared. Some
- applications in this catagory include: AutoDesk's AutoCad for OS/2
- and Xerox Ventura Publisher for PM.
-
- 5. Presentation Application Driver
-
- The Hewlett-Packard OS/2 PM PCL printer driver is only a Presentation
- Manager application driver. Applications which support the PM windowing
- and PM API's have direct access to the Job Properties dialog box. If
- the application does not provide access to this dialog, then it is most
- likely not a PM app, and therefore will not use any special
- characteristics of the printer such as fonts or orientation.

- 6. "Printer Jammed" error
-
- This generally indicates a communication problem. Causes can include:
- timing out, using a non-PM application which has a problem, a problem
- with the cable, problems with other PM drivers installed, or
- a problem with the network ( if applicable ).
-
- 7. Job stays in Q or disappears
-
- Possible Causes:
- a) Not enough storage on the swapping drive. There should be
- at least 5 megabytes of contiguous space available.
-
- b) Mis-match of form types. The form size which is selected in
- the Job Properties dialog must match a form size selected in
- a particular tray in the Printer Properties dialog.
-
- c) Old PM drivers. Delete all drivers and re-install. See the
- Installation procedure at the top of this document
-
- d) Having one printer selected on a client (or workstation ) and
- a different printer selected on the server. The model of the
- printers ( i.e. LaserJet IIISi ) must be the same on the
- workstation and the server. If you have a need for more than
- one printer, install multiple printers with different queues.
-
- 8. To improve the speed of printing
-
- Ensure that device fonts are in use. A device font is much faster
- than an ATM font. If it is necessary to use ATM fonts, ensure that
- the "Fast System Fonts" in the Job Properties is enabled. This will
- allow ATM fonts to be printed much faster.
