  1.       JERRY POURNELLE INSTALLS OS/2 (or Jerry's Big Adventure)

  4. Jerry will test the hell out of OS/2! First he'll back up his entire
  5. system - "Big Cat", his Cheetah 486/33 which has served as his Main
  6. Machine and Faithful Servent since the *dawn* of 486/33's, in his
  7. own words "it runs fast and clean" (it must have an Adaptec catalytic
  8. drive converter) - onto his Maximum Storage WORM (write once, read
  9. many) drive. Unfortunately, (uh-oh!) he will somewhere along the line
  10. become confused and lose access to his hard drive! He will call his
  11. son Alex (who has a data recovery business, he may not be the best,
  12. but he's "good eough") Alex will throw up his hands in confusion,
  13. he can't figure it out either (that Alex, what a chip off the old
  14. block!) Time to call Perceptive Solutions and have them send someone
  15. over to tweak the Perceptive Solutions HyperStore disk controller,
  16. that must be the problem! The Perceptive Solutions guy shows up and
  17. reseats the controller into its mother board slot, BINGO! Jerry has 
  18. his drive back! Drat! He forgot, Big Cat isn't connected to the
  19. Maximum Storage WORM (write once, read many) drive! Time for
  20. LapLink III! There's lots of transfer utilities out there, but he
  21. sure does like LapLink III, its "good enough". He LapLinks his entire
  22. drive from the 486/33 (Big Cat) to his 386/33 (Ingrown Toenail),
  23. and from there he sends it across his Lantastic network (from
  24. Artisoft, he sure does like it! It "Does The Job") onto his wife's
  25. 386/25, and from there squirts the data onto the Maximum Storage WORM
  26. (write once, read many) drive. Well, now that "Big Cat" is backed up,
  27. time to install OS/2! He runs the install, and what do you know?
  28. IT WORKS THE FIRST TIME! It's the first time Jerry has *EVER* gotten
  29. though an install in one column!!! He tries to crash it by running 12
  30. concurrent copies of Mrs. Pournelle's Reading Program, and
  31. IT MULTITASKS THEM ALL WITHOUT A PROBLEM!!! Jerry is beside himself
  32. with joy and declares OS/2 *GOOD ENOUGH*!!!
