- Breakup.exe

- Users guide
-
-
- What is it?
-
- Well, it's a utility that will take any size text file, formatted or
- not, and break the file into smaller parts that you can view with your
- favorite text editor.
-
- Since most text editors now days will only load 64k files at the
- largest, Breakup.exe will allow you to take those big .DOC files and
- make several smaller files out of them.
-
-
- What will it do?
-
- It will create several (user selectable) files called out1, out2,
- out3, etc. up to out65535. These files each contain the number of
- pages that you specified when the program was run. It ALWAYS uses the
- same filenames, so you will need to rename or copy the out* files to a
- different filename before you run Breakup again. Otherwise Breakup
- will over write the existing files each time it runs.
-
- What won't it do?
-
- It won't do windows, make coffee, provide hours of fun, or improve
- mental capacity. It also won't work with .EXE, .COM files, or most
- data files. It is intended for TEXT files only.
-
- Does it have a warranty?
-
- NO! Absolutely NOT! I don't warrant this thing to do anything except
- eat up disk space on your system. Use it at your own risk. If
- Breakup.exe blows up ANY files or equipment, remember that you were
- warned. Breakup.exe was severely tested for about ten minutes before I
- shipped it out. Don't expect sympathy if it goes south.
-
-
- Using Breakup.Exe:
-
- Place Breakup in one of the directories in your path, so that DOS can
- find it from whatever drive or directory you're in.
-
- Any time you want to break up a big text file just type in breakup at
- the DOS prompt.
-
- You'll be prompted for the filename to break apart. You can type in
- the path and filename, BUT the out* files will be created in the CURRENT
- logged directory, not in the path that you typed. For this reason, I
- suggest that you use Breakup from the same directory as the file is found.
-
- If Breakup can't find the file you typed, it will issue an error
- message and let you re-type the filename.
-
- Next you need to tell Breakup how many pages per file that you want in
- the OUT* files. This is kind of tricky, because of the different line
- lengths in different files. Breakup defaults to 100 pages if you just
- press enter, but that's to big for most editors. A close way to calculate
- the file sizes is listed below.
-
- Pages Average File Size
- ===============================
- 25 55 - 63k
- 50 102 - 130k
- 100 230 - 293k
-
- As you can see, the sizes vary greatly depending on the line lengths
- in the text file. Most files have an average line length of about 53
- characters, but that's not a rule to follow.
-
- Breakup will look for Form Feed characters as it works, so if you are
- running it on a formatted ASCII text file, it should work fine. It will
- break each page at line 60 if no form feed is found before that. Since
- most word processors use 55 to 58 lines per page, 60 lines is a pretty
- safe bet. If form feeds come after the 60th line per page, you'll get a
- really strange looking file.
-
- That's all there is to running the thing, no secrets, no magic, and
- no on-line help.
-
- System requirements:
-
- 1> You need a computer to use this program.
- 2> It needs to be IBM compatible.
- 3> It needs to be running IBM PCDOS or MsDOS 1.1 or higher.
- 4> It needs at least 14k free.
