- │ 2. INTRODUCTION │
- ╘═════════════════╛
-
- This program will append directories to your system PATH, hence the
- name ApPATH.
-
- Normally, the only way to append to an existing PATH was to make a
- batch file which said:
-
- PATH %PATH%;%1 ...
-
- But when that batch file was executed, DOS fills in the original
- PATH and you would get a 'Bad command or filename' error when the
- total number of characters would exceed 128 characters.
-
- ApPATH does allow you to create a system PATH of more than 128
- characters, but you will have to watch out that you stay within the
- size of your current environment. See section 3 - USAGE for more
- details on how to use ApPATH.
-
- Notes about the environment.
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- DOS will choke if you try to expand your path beyond the current
- environment size.
- Normally, the environment is 160 bytes by default, which is not
- enough for most applications using environment variables.
- It will most certainly not be enough if you plan to expand your
- path extensively.
- This can be remedied by specifying the environment size desired in
- the system's CONFIG.SYS as follows:
-
- SHELL=C:\COMMAND.COM /E:# /P
-
- Make this the first line in your CONFIG.SYS and fill in the desired
- number of bytes for '#', i.e. /E:4096 will yield an enviroment size
- of 4 K-bytes. The absolute maximum you can specify is 32768 bytes,
- while the minimum is the default size of 160 bytes.
-
- ATTENTION: DOS versions 3.10 will require the number of paragraphs
- instead of the number of bytes for '#'. A paragraph is 16 bytes
- long, so one should specify /E:256 for a 4K environment when using
- DOS 3.10. In this case, the minimum would be 10 paragraphs
- (default), and the maximum 2048 paragraphs.
-
- An environment size of 1024 bytes (64 paragraphs) should be more
- than sufficient for most purposes.
-
- IMPORTANT: DOS versions 3.00 and below do NOT support the /E
- switch. See your DOS manual for more details.
- If your DOS version does not support the /E switch, you can either
- change to a DOS version which does, or use one of the many patches
- available for increasing the DOS default environment size.
- Using such a patch with a DOS version which does support the /E
- switch is obsolete and therefore not recommended.
-
- Last remark: if you have set your environment size big enough, it
- is possible to include every directory in your path and thus
- create a path which would take about half your screen to display.
-
- REMEMBER, HOWEVER, THAT LARGER PATHS TAKE MORE TIME FOR DOS TO
- SEARCH THROUGH! So don't make your path longer than you have to.
-
-
-
- ╒══════════╕
- │ 3. USAGE │
- ╘══════════╛
-
- Command line syntax is:
-
- APPATH [;][dir][;dir][;dir][...]
-
- where [dir] designates a directory to be appended to the PATH.
- The square brackets indicate that the parameter is optional and
- should themselves not be typed.
-
- If no parameters at all are specified, the program will show you
- the current system PATH, as typing PATH without parameters would
- also do.
-
- ApPATH assumes you already have typed in a PATH. It will append
- the path specification you type after the 'ApPATH' program name to
- the existing PATH. There's no need to begin with a ';'.
- If it's not there, ApPATH will insert it for you.
-
- Remember, that DOS does not allow you to type more than 128
- characters a time! So, if you want to append a lot to the existing
- PATH, you can use multiple ApPATH commands.
-
- Example: PATH C:\;C:\DOS
- ApPATH C:\UTILS;C:\PASCAL
- ApPATH C:\TEST
-
- Typing PATH «Enter» will now show you:
-
- PATH=C:\;C:\DOS;C:\UTILS;C:\PASCAL;C:\TEST
-
- That's all there is to it.

- Ver. Comment
- ~~~~ ~~~~~~~
- 1.10 - ApPATH had problems detecting the end of the enviroment space
- under generic MS-DOS 3.30. I wonder why it took so long
- before someone reported this to me?
- Thanks to Gary Gordon of 1:343/65@fidonet.org for reporting
- this bug.
- ApPATH will now also work correctly with MS-DOS 5.00.
- 1.00.01 - ApPATH was recompiled with Turbo Pascal v5.5 and
- compressed with the Japanese DIET program.
- 1.00 - Base version (Turbo Pascal v4.0).
