- Rough documentation for TechScan 1.0
-
- LEGAL
-
- TechScan is FreeWare. It may be distributed in unmodified
- form for FREE; no charges may be taken for distribution except
- nominal copying fees. Although it's free, all the files are
- still copyrighted by Lauri Aalto. Permission is hereby granted
- to include TechScan in public domain software collections,
- upload it to bulletin board systems and ftp archives.
-
- WHAT
-
- TechScan is a simple, quick and dirty tool written in
- assembler (took 5 minutes) for all TechnoBBS sysops who have
- files online. It rescans your file tree and updates the global
- list of files thus making those files not added with
- TechCon-aware utilities listable and downloadable. It's exactly
- the same as the update filelist entry in the special menu of
- TechnoBBS. It just doesn't need a node running and it can be
- run from scripts, that's the difference.
-
- INSTALLATION
-
- Simple. Just move the executable to somewhere on your
- command search path (BBS:Bin preferred) and it's done. You're a
- sysop, you should be able to do this without advice.
-
- USAGE
-
- Just run it. TechScan takes no arguments, all it does is
- that it sends a message to TechCon telling it to update the
- global list of files.
- TechScan is pure. It can be run from Workbench also, but
- there will be no output. Icons included (without permission)
- are standard MagicWb icons copyrighted by Martin Huttenloher.
- If they look ugly, you probably aren't using the MagicWb
- screenmode and palette.
-
- MORE ADVANCED USAGE
-
- Having TechScan executed regulary may be a good idea. One
- way to do this is to add it to your User-Startup file or drag
- it's icon to your WbStartup drawer. I personally have it in my
- crontab. A typical crotab entry would look something like this:
-
- # Rescan the file base every night at 0500 hours.
-
- 0 5 * * * TechScan
-
- NOTE
-
- As rescanning and sorting is very CPU consuming, it's
- adviced that you run TechScan on non-rush hours as it locks up
- TechCon and tasks running at lower priorities for a while
- depending on the amount of files and speed of your HD/CPU.
-
- BUGS & FUTURE VERSIONS
-
- As TechScan is as simple as it is, there should be no bugs.
- If you for some reason discover any, don't hesitate to tell me
- so I can fix them. For now I see no reason to create any future
- versions, but if you do, tell me, please!
