  1.                                 Mailing Lists

  3.           Mailing Lists are like Usenet Newsgroups in that they are
  4.           automated discussions groups focused on special interests.
  5.           They are different in that they work entirely via email
  6.           and tend to contain less "chatter."

  8.           Sources For Lists of Lists
  9.           --------------------------
  10.           A comprehensive list of available lists (updated every 2
  11.           weeks or so) may be obtained via anonymous ftp at:
  12.           ftp.nisc.sri.com  in the directory: /netinfo.  It is called
  13.           "interest-group.Z."  It is a compressed file and must be
  14.           uncompressed using the Unix uncompress command.  You may
  15.           download it, search it, or print it at your liesure.  (Warning:
  16.           it is HUGE).  Another exhaustive list is available for ftp
  17.           from dartcms1.dartmouth.edu in the directory "siglists."  It
  18.           is broken up into multiple parts, so first get the file 
  19.           "read.me," from this directory and follow the directions.
  20.           Lists of Bitnet only lists are available from any Bitnet
  21.           listserv.  Mail a letter to the listserv and in the body of
  22.           the letter "list global."  If you are interested in a specific
  23.           subject include the message "list global/name of subject."
  24.           An Internet only list of lists is available for ftp from
  25.           rtfm.mit.edu in the directory /pub/usenet/news.answers/mail/
  26.           mailing-lists.  It is broken into various parts.  A list of
  27.           specifically academic lists can be ftped from ksuvxa.kent.edu
  28.           from the "library" directory.  Get the file "acadlist.readme"
  29.           for instructions.
