- How to Use Internet Gopher
- Updated by OARnet 4/94
-
-
- Internet Gopher, written "gopher" in this document, provides access to
- documents and data from servers at educational and government sites located
- all over the world.
-
- If you plan to use gopher often, you will want to install the user
- interface, or client software, on your local computer. (If not, see below.)
- Client software is available for many types of computers by anonymous ftp
- to boombox.micro.umn.edu in the directory /pub/gopher. When you set up your
- client, point it by default to the server on gopher.oar.net. Then, to use
- gopher, just type:
-
- gopher
-
- The client interfaces are menu driven and easy to use. Here we talk about
- the "curses" client for UNIX. An appended slash indicates that a menu item
- is a directory; an appended period means that the item is a data or text
- file. Telnet connections have an appended "<tel>". Use your arrow keys to
- select items and press Return to view them. While viewing a document or
- data set, you may type m to mail an electronic copy to yourself or s to
- save the file locally. At any time, press u to go to the previous menu. To
- see a help screen, press ?. To quit, type q while you are viewing a menu.
-
- To explore the information resources offered via gopher, you will want to
- choose the menu item Other Gopher and Information Servers. From there, you
- can navigate through the menus and select the server you would like to
- access. The Gopher-Jewels submenu contains the best servers on what is
- called "gopherspace". You can search for information at gopher sites around
- the world by keyword and retrieve relevant documents or data using
- Veronica. Veronica searches the names of gopher menu items, not the
- contents of the files. On the OARnet gopher server, Veronica searches are
- on the Search Gopherspace Using Veronica submenu, which is accessed from
- the Other Gopher and Information Servers menu.
-
- If you know the Internet address of a particular gopher server, you can
- directly "gopher to" the server. For example, if you want to gopher to the
- OARnet gopher, you might type:
-
- gopher gopher.oar.net
-
- If you would like to try gopher but don't want to install a client on your
- local computer yet, you can access the OARnet gopher by Telnet. Your
- computer may have a completely different Telnet program than then
- one used below. Here is a sample session coming from a UNIX computer. You
- type what is in bold.
-
- $ telnet gopher.oar.net
- Trying 131.187.1.131...
- Connected to ns.oar.net.
- malgudi SunOS4.1 (ttyp5)
- login: gopher
- Last login: Fri Feb 12 08:41:51 from bigvax.alfred.edu
- SunOS Release 4.1.2 (FUBAR) #1: Tue May 19 14:55:22 EDT 1992
- < gopher menu appears here>
-
- Accessed via Telnet, the OARnet gopher will not save files for you on your
- computer. Instead, if you want to retrieve a file you are viewing, type m
- to e-mail it to yourself.
-
- Several gopher clients are available via anonymous ftp from ftp.oar.net in
- the directory /pub/dialup.
