- .GOPHERRC AND MORE BOOKMARKS
-
- About as technical as I'll get on Gopher will be to take a look at
- the .gopherrc file. The .gopherrc file is a hidden file that
- contains information about your Gopher client. The particular
- information I'm concerned about in this session is the bookmark
- information in the .gopherrc file.
-
- On my UNIX machine I can see my .gopherrc file by using "ls" to
- list the file and add the "-a" and "-l" flags to list the hidden
- files in a long version. I'll pipe it through a more command.

-
- Besides some information on my Gopher client there is information
- about the bookmarks I've created. The Type, Name, Path, Host and
- Port are all information on a distant Gopher much of which is
- needed to connect to a distant Gopher. This file is a text file so
- I can go into it with a text editor or wordprocessor and rearrange
- the order of my bookmark.
-
- We cannot have more than one bookmark. However, we can rename the
- .gopherrc file, then create a new .gopherrc file and bookmark when
- we next enter Gopher. I can rename .gopherrc files to gopher1,
- gopher2, gopher3, gophern so that I have an unlimited number of
- gopher files. Then when I want to use a particular gopher file
- I'll replace the .gopherrc with that file.
-
- This past summer I gave an assignment to my class at the University
- of Pittsburgh's School of Library and Information Science to create
- bookmarks in subject areas of their choosing. I thought you might
- get an idea from some of the finished bookmarks on how you might
- use Gopher to help in your information navigating. The only
- aberration in these bookmarks is that I asked the student to try to
- give a variety of Gopher items in their Gopher demonstration.
-
-
- REFERENCE TOOLS
-
- Lora-Lynn Rice decided to create a personal reference bookmark.
- She decided that all good reference sources should have a
- dictionary and Thesauri as well as several indexing and abstracting
- sources. Ready references such as Cia World Fact Book are
- included, and she also includes electronic journals and Gopher
- searching using Veronica. Here is Lora-lynn's Gopher screen with
- the Gopher bookmark technical information.

- The lute files and lute archives comes from a server in
- Dartmouth who is involved with teaching lute. The lute files
- contains much dialog on problems with the accurate performance of
- music on the lute while the lute.archives has several tablatures of
- pieces that haven't been in print. The rest of the files
- pertain to popular aspects of the guitar. Tablature-Chords for
- Guitar is an encyclopedia of different chord forms found on the
- instrument, which would be of great use to a beginner. The two
- bookmarks dealing with Ragtime guitar did not have anything in them
- but a note saying that some tablatures would be included soon. My
- favourite bookmark is the one simply marked "guitar". It has
- several menus after this one and contains many songs by recent
- recording artists in tablature form. It will be invaluable to me as
- a teacher because transcription is a lengthy process. Now if a
- student tells me he wants to learn "Ten Years Gone" by Led
- Zeppelin, all I have to do is pull up the guitar menu, look under
- Led Zeppelin and see if the song has already been transcribed. If
- it has (and it has), print it. I have some tunes that I have
- transcribed that I will post as soon as I have time. Ricky Prado.
