- SUBJECT TREES AND STUDY CARRELS
-
- There are other places in Gopherspace that organize Gophers by
- disciplines--usually the information is organized by subject or by
- a combination of names. If only the world was perfect and we all
- used the same naming scheme. Oh well.
-
- If you search Veronica with the word "subject," you'll get an
- enormous amount of information--most of which will be irrelevant.
- I've searched Veronica for you, and found that what we _really_
- want to look for is "subject tree". Here's what you get:

-
- In this Veronica search, there is an implied "and" when I use the
- phrase "subject tree". This means that Veronica will return any
- item with the words "subject" and "tree" in it.
-
- I've also learned from my experience searching on the word
- "discipline" that what I really want are directories, not text
- files or other Gopher items. Thus I limit my search by using
- "-t1", which indicates I want only directories.
-
- Let's look at number five " 5. Subject Tree Internet Resources @
- Other Gophers/ ".

- Selecting number one gives use information about this collection of

-
- **********
-
- These directories contain links to resources organized by subject
-
- matter. The resources themselves are scattered all over the
- Internet. They may be unavailable at any time due to many factors
- beyond our control.
-
-
- The selection of resources you see here is based on several
- similar collections of such links maintained on Gopher servers at
- the following places:
-
- Consortium for International Earth Science Information Network
- (CIESIN, flubber.ciesin.org)
- Mass. General Hospital, Harvard University
- (weeds.mgh.harvard.edu)
- North Carolina State University (dewey.lib.ncsu.edu)
- SLU, Sweden (pinus.slu.se)
- SUNET, Sweden (sunic.sunet.se)
- Texas A&M University (tamuts.tamu.edu)
- The WELL (nkosi.well.sf.ca.ua)
- University of Nevada at Reno (hunter.unr.edu)
- UCSC InfoSlug (scilibx.ucsc.edu)
- ... plus a few specialized collections from other places.
-
- Once a week we merge selected directories of links at these
- institutions into our own collections of links. To see how we do
- this, look in the subdirectory "More about this collection of
- Internet resources".
-
- If you know of other collections of Internet resources organized
- by subject matter which we should merge in a similar fashion,
- please send mail to "riceinfo@rice.edu".
-
- In the future we plan to add our own local resources to these
- menus. If you have information in any of these subject areas
- which you would like to make available, please send mail to
- "riceinfo@rice.edu".

- Weather Server @ Thinking Machines: pittsburgh

-
- **********
-
- Looks like I'm in luck. My search retrieves one file from the
- Weather Server at Thinking Machines, and I'll select this file.
- The ".txt" usually means that it's an acsii text file.
-
- **********
-
- "/tmp/gopheCAAa02270" may be a binary file. Continue?
-
- **********
-
- Argh!!! It isn't a plain text file! A binary file can be a
- graphics file, sound file, data file, word processing file or other
- type of file. In most cases, extensions of "txt" or "doc" mean
- plain ascii text, but that isn't true of this file. As you can
- see, the Internet world, like the real world, is not perfect!
-
- The Gopher client I'm using can't read binary files. There are
- Gopher clients that can, and we'll describe some later. I've found
- that many binary files that have characters in them that my Gopher
- client can't read can be read by my e-mail program. The text of
- these files probably has a few non ascii characters left in it from
- the word processing program that was used to create it. I'll
- gamble and mail this file to myself.
-
- Here's the file from my e-mail program. There are one or two
- characters that weren't ascii.
