  9.  not make it to the printed manual of Ver. 2.00. It also lists the 
  10.  files distributed with Ver 2.00, and explains how to upgrade from 
  11.  previous versions.

  95. Note:  Though the program will run on an XT or a 286 based CPU, with

  100.  GETTING STARTED
  101.  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  102.  The information provided below is to help you start the program for 
  103.  your hardware configuration.  For more details about the operation of 
  104.  the program press the F1 (function) key once you have started the 
  105.  program.

  107.  Once installed (see below for installation procedure) ProtoCAD 3D is 
  108.  started from DOS using the command: 
  109.  
  110.   C:> PC3D /Option1/Option2/Option3/.....     [ENTER]
  111.  
  112.  where Option1, Option2, etc.  are options specifying the type of 
  113.  memory to use, the type of graphics video adaptor, etc.  For a 
  114.  complete description of these options, please print and consult the 
  115.  on-disk user's manual.

  120.  Remember that a shareware copy is an EVALUATION copy that you can use

  147.  Installation on Floppy or Hard Disk:  
  148.  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  149.  The program will work if installed on 3.5" (720K or 1.44Mb) diskettes, 
  150.  or 5.25" HD (1.2 Mb) diskettes.  We recommend that the program is 
  151.  installed either on a hard disk, or a high density floppy diskette, 
  152.  since this will permit the help file, and other auxiliary files, to be 
  153.  available to the user.

  155.      If you Install and run ProtoCAD 3D from a floppy disk, without      
  156.      Expanded memory (EMS), or if the /NE command line switch is        
  157.      used, and you remove the ProtoCAD 3D program disk from  
  158.      the drive while the program is running, you will get an 
  159.      error message and will be instructed to re-insert the disk.
  160.    
  161.  * Place the ProtoCAD 3D original diskette in drive A: (or B:)
  162.  
  163.  * Make sure the current logged drive is A: (Type A:, or B:, and 
  164.    press ENTER, if it is not).

  166.  * Type INSTALL and press [ENTER].  Then, follow the simple on-screen 
  167.    instructions to install your copy of the program on the desired disk(s)

  171. Upgrading from Ver 1.1 or earlier
  172. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  173. If you are upgrading from an earlier version of the program, we 
  174. recommend that you install the program in the directory where the old 
  175. version resides, answering Yes when the installation program asks if 
  176. you want to overwrite the files.  Furthermore, it is recomended that 
  177. you delete the old configuration file (PC3D.CFG), in that directory 
  178. prior to running ProtoCAD 3D v2.00.

  181. Windows Users
  182. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  183. ProtoCAD will work fine under Windows 3.1.  If you are going to run the 
  184. program in a windows environment, you may use the files PC3D.PIF and 
  185. PC3D.ICO which are extracted as part of the installation process.  It 
  186. should be noted that the PC3D.PIF file is setup to run the program in a 
  187. windowed mode.  For better program response, however, we recommend that 
  188. the PIF file is modified (using the Windows PIF Editor), to run in full 
  189. screen mode.

  192.  On-Disk Documentation
  193.  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  194.  The installation process extracts a file called PC3D.MAN.  This is a 
  195.  ready-to-print formatted, User's manual for the program.  
  196.  
  197.  Following the installation, make sure that the PC3D.MAN file is 
  198.  indeed on your default directory.  Then, to print this manual: 
  199.  
  200.  (1)  Make sure that the your printer is ON  and there is enough 
  201.       paper in it (the manual is about 100 pages).
  202.  
  203.  (2)  From the DOS prompt, type
  204.  
  205.       COPY PC3D.MAN PRN and press [ENTER]
  206.  
  207.       Note that if your printer is connected to a SERIAL port,
  208.       then you need to use the command  COPY PC3D.MAN COM1, or
  209.       COPY PC3D.MAN COM2 (depending on which serial port your 
  210.       printer is connected to).

  214. NOTES/ADDITIONS TO THE USER'S MANUAL
  215. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  216.  1. When a new view is selected, an image extents scan is made and the 
  217.     image is placed in the center of the screen (similar to performing 
  218.     an Image, All command), if the Auto Ctr toggle is ON.
  219.     
  220.  2. Identifying reference marks are placed in the center of facets.  This 
  221.     is particularly useful when trying to change the surface normal, since 
  222.     it permits you to select uniquely identified facets. 
  223.  
  224.  3. The limit on the number of points that can be accommodated when 
  225.     importing a WAV file, was increased to 8000.
  226.  
  227.  4. VGA 256-color and VESA color mapping is done using a 3,3,2 model, 
  228.     i.e., 3 bits are used for Green, 3 for Red and 2 for Blue.  Since 
  229.     there is not enough resolution (2 bits) for Blue, you might 
  230.     experience blue patches when rendering an 'almost' gray scale image.  
  231.     If that happens, select the Gray option in the Render sub-menu. 
  232.  
  233.  5. When rendering in 256 colors, the edges are NOT visible regardless of 
  234.     the setting selected in the Render, Edges sub-menu.
  235.  
  236.  6. The trackball employs an effective 'gimbal lock' mechanism.  If the 
  237.     image is rotated/rolled beyond a 90 degree angle, the  Yaw  angle 
  238.     automatically switches by 180 degrees. 
  239.  
  240.  7. As the observer distance (D) is reduced, and you move closer to the 
  241.     center of the image, you will observe some clipping of polygons that 
  242.     are effectively behind the focal length plane.  This normally occurs at 
  243.     about D=0.5.  You might need to render the image to re-orient 
  244.     yourself. 
  245.  
  246.  8. When attempting to print without EMS, the 32k-48k shadow buffer is 
  247.     used by the Z-buffer model to internally render the image in 
  248.     horizontal strips.  Since the buffer size is limited, the longer the 
  249.     strip (specified print width) the narrower the vertical strip size 
  250.     that can be accommodated.  When the calculated vertical size falls 
  251.     below 16 scan lines, the program will not render and will abort the 
  252.     printing process.  This limit will accommodate a 7.5 inch width at 
  253.     120 dots per inch resolution.  Under these conditions, if you want to 
  254.     increase the resolution, you'd have to reduce the specified print 
  255.     width.  For above example, if you wanted to use 240 dpi resolution, 
  256.     the specified width should be approximately 3.75 inches.

  258.  9. When creating TGA output files, the program requires approximately 
  259.     300k of EMS to render the image.  If it's not available, the TGA 
  260.     output menu is disabled and an appropriate error message will be 
  261.     issued.
