  2.                    TALKING ABC's

  4.        Registering you copy of Talking ABC's:

  6.          Send $23 to:

  14.                Phone number (in case of questions),
  15.                Disk size  (5¼ Double Density, 5¼ High Density, 3½ or 3½HD)
  16.                Where you got your evaluation copy (and the company 
  17.                name on the package if you bought it in a store.)
  18.  
  19.          We will send you the latest version of Talking 
  20.          ABC's plus the FREE games, plus the technical support
  21.          phone number.  Disk space permitting, we will send you 
  22.          other shareware games to try. (So if you can use high
  23.          density disks be sure and tell me so I can put more on
  24.          the disk.)

  26.        Installing Talking ABC's from a distribution disk:
  27.        ------------------------------------------------- 
  28.           1.  Put disk #1 in drive A  (or B).
  29.               (3½ disks only have 1 disk)
  30.  
  31.           2.  Type A:INSTALL  (or B:INSTALL)
  32.  
  33.           3. Answer the questions.  The program  
  34.              will create a directory called      
  35.              ABC and will copy all the files     
  36.              to it. When it is finished you      
  37.              will be able to run the program     
  38.              from your hard disk.                
  39.                                                  
  40.           4. Put away your disks in a safe        
  41.              place.                               
  42.                                                  
  43.           5. You should have about 60 *.tsx files,
  44.              ABC.EXE, BEACH, BEACH.ABC, RMN40.CGA and
  45.              RMN40.GFT in your directory now.

  47.        Starting Talking ABC's:                   
  48.        -----------------------                   
  49.          1.  Be sure you are on the hard disk. 
  50.              type:  C: (or whatever drive) and press the 
  51.              enter key.                                  
  52.                                                          
  53.          2.  Change to the ABC directory by typing:  
  54.                   CD \ABC  
  55.              and press the Enter key.                    
  56.                                                          
  57.          3.  Type:   ABC  
  58.              and press the enter key.

  62.        Stopping Talking ABC's:                           
  63.        -----------------------                           
  64.          1. Press the <Esc> key to get the               
  65.             menu.                                        
  66.                                                          
  67.          2. Press the <Esc> key again to                 
  68.             stop the program.

  71.      TROUBLE SHOOTING                                                    
  72.      ----------------

  74.         1. Garbled sound:  Remove programs like Windows Enhanced mode, 
  75.            Deskview and others that multitask.  Note: You can run 
  76.            Windows in standard mode and Talking ABC's will work fine.  
  77.            To start Windows in standard mode type: 
  78.                Win /s
  79.            Windows may be started automatically by your AUTOEXEC.BAT 
  80.            file.  You can go into that file and add the /S to the WIN 
  81.            statement to cause Windows to run in standard mode.  If you 
  82.            do things like receive faxes in the background this might 
  83.            not be a good thing to do.  For most people it will be 
  84.            fine. 
  85.                                                          
  86.         2. Insufficient memory message: Remove TSR's.  Reboot.  
  87.                           
  88.         3. No sound at all.  You may have forgotten the second 
  89.            distribution file called ABCZIP2.EXE.  You need to unzip it 
  90.            to your hard disk.  Follow the installation instructions. 
  91.            If you have files called A.tsx, airplane.tsx etc then you 
  92.            have already done this.  Also, sound does not work if you 
  93.            start the program while running WINDOWS on a 386 (enhanced 
  94.            mode).

  96.         4. You have an EGA but the program will only run in CGA:
  97.            Try starting ABC's like this:
  98.                   ABC  E   <enter>
  99.            This will force it into EGA mode.  This happens a lot on
  100.            Tandy 1000's.
  101.  
  102.         5. You type ABC, nothing happens and you have to reboot your
  103.            computer.
  104.              You probably have a program already loaded in memory that 
  105.            is conflicting with Talking ABC's.  One program that does 
  106.            this is the Ultrasound TSR that emulates the SoundBlaster.  
  107.            There may be others. Try this: 
  108.  
  109.              Create a plain DOS boot disk with the following steps:
  110.                  Put a blank diskette in Drive A:
  111.                  Type: FORMAT A: /S
  112.                  Type: SYS A:
  113.              Now reboot with your disk in the A: drive.
  114.                   Type: C:             (or whatever drive ABC's is on)
  115.                   Type: CD \ABC        (or whatever directory ABC's is in)
  116.                   Type: ABC
  117.            
  118.              If this fixes the problem then there is something in your 
  119.              AUTOEXEC.BAT file that is conflicting with Talking ABC's.

  123.       ABOUT TALKING ABC's

  126.          I (Karen Crowther) support my kids by writing programs.  In 
  127.          fact, my 5 year old, Chris, is the voice on Talking ABC's.
  128.          After I wrote Talking ABC's I learned that retail stores do 
  129.          not want anything on their shelves with a list-price under 
  130.          $50. (Those "under $15" programs are usually give-aways that 
  131.          the publisher is dumping - although we shareware authors may 
  132.          change this.)   It seemed to me that parents of young 
  133.          children are the ones least able to afford these high prices.  
  134.          Then I looked into the costs of publishing and found that in 
  135.          many cases the BOXES cost more than the publisher paid for 
  136.          the program!  I have purchased several children's games from 
  137.          stores.  One was great, but the rest were disappointing.  My 
  138.          kids played them for an hour and never looked at them again.  
  139.          What a waste of $50!  (But what a great looking box!) 
  140.  
  141.          That's when I decided to distribute Talking ABC's via 
  142.          shareware.  It seemed the fairest way for both my customers 
  143.          and for me.  My customers get to try the program first so 
  144.          they don't get stuck paying for something their children 
  145.          don't like, and they get a commercial quality program at a 
  146.          low price.  I don't have to pay the artist yet more money to 
  147.          design a box, and I get my program out on the market in the 
  148.          shortest possible time.
