- F O R E I G N P A S S P O R T

- by Paul McAleer

-
- Is this the year you take that European vacation? Or is this the year
- that English becomes the secondary language in your community? In either
- case you may want to brush up on your Spanish, French or German. Paul
- McAleer's FOREIGN PASSPORT is a straightforward quiz program that will help
- you understand typical sentences and phrases in these languages.
-
- I seem to have forgotten that you may be a Spanish-, French- or
- German-speaking person who wants to brush up on his English. FOREIGN
- PASSPORT works both ways -- English to French, French to English, for
- example.
-
- A disclaimer is in order. Paul took his data from several books on
- translations for tourists. The books may be wrong, Paul may have made a
- mistake, or I may have made a mistake when I edited his program. In
- addition, there are regional dialects and disagreements over usage. So, if
- you spy a translation that's not exactly correct, write us and tell us about
- it but please don't call our tech support number and ask for a fixed
- program.
-
- I think you'll be surprised as I was when you take the tests. You'll
- probably score much higher than you thought you would. All four languages
- are romance languages (I think) and it's amazing how similar they are,
- especially when written out. This is encouraging. You will find that
- reading signs, pamphlets and other reading materials in a foreign land is
- not difficult at all. If only it were easier to understand vernacular
- speech...
-
- The main menu allows you to choose between eight options: Foreign to
- English, English to Foreign (three each), Tile Style and Quit. A formal
- quiz consists of 35 sentences but you can quit at any time by pressing Q.
- You're shown how well you did and returned to the Main Menu. It's really a
- simple program.
-
- Paul used Jon Mattson's CONTROL 80 (from LOADSTAR 128 #10) and two
- fonts so all of the proper accented letters in the languages are shown.
- There is no provision for entering phrases of your own at this time.
-
- Good luck! Bon fortune! Buenos fortunos! Gudenlucken!
