- LOADSTAR 128 #10 was the memorable Utilities issue and one of the more
- useful systems was Robert Rockefeller's 128 SHELL. It was a small, fast
- program that made your 128 act like a CP/M or MS-DOS system in that you had
- access to machine language tools and programs merely by typing the name of
- the tool. It was a great programmer's and user's system and we are happy to
- announce that Robert has added another fantastic program, a fast and
- friendly file copier for the SHELL.
-
- You won't need LOADSTAR 128 #10 to use this program. Everything is on
- this disk, but if you want to enjoy the full power and utility of Robert's
- SHELL system, I recommend you get #10 and its collection of utilities. But
- enough marketing hype, here's Robert to tell you about his new baby.
-
-
- COM.CPY is a menu-driven copy program for the C128 SHELL which can run
- in either 40-column or 80-column mode. To use CPY just type CPY then
- RETURN, but only after the SHELL has been loaded. If you choose Run It (or
- press R while reading this text) the SHELL will be loaded and you can just
- type CPY to go straight to COM.CPY.
-
- At the top of the screen is a horizontal menu strip with these entries:
- DISK, FILE, SETUP, and QUIT. To select an entry from a menu just position
- the cursor on a menu item using the CRSR keys, then press RETURN. Below the
- menu is the program title. Below the title are instructions for using the
- menu system. Below the instructions is a box which lists the current source
- and destination devices used when copying.
-
- Selecting DISK causes a sub-menu to drop down with five entries:
-
- ERASE - erases a disk without re-formatting. You will be required to enter
- the device number and a new disk name at a prompt. This is often known as a
- short format.
-
- FORMAT - formats a disk. Again, enter the device number and a new disk name
- and ID.
-
- COMMAND - allows you to issue a DOS command to a disk device. Typical DOS
- commands are RENAME, SCRATCH, INITIALIZE and COPY. For RENAMEing and
- SCRATCHING files it's easier to use the SCRATCH and RENAME features found in
- the FILE menu, described below.
-
- COLLECT - validates a disk. COLLECT is equivalent to the BASIC 7.0 COLLECT
- command.
-
- DIRECTORY - displays the disk's directory.
-
- Selecting FILE causes a sub-menu to drop down with three entries:
-
- COPY - copies files from one diskette to another diskette. Files will be
- copied from the diskette in the source device to the destination device
- diskette. The source and destination devices may be the same device, in
- which case you will be notified via prompts when diskettes must be switched.
- The SOURCE DISK is the diskette being copied from while the DESTINATION disk
- is the diskette being copied to.
-
- After selecting COPY a box will appear in which all the filenames on the
- source diskette are listed. Using the CRSR keys, position the cursor on a
- file you wish to copy, then type the SPACE bar to mark the file for copying.
- Marked files have an asterisk beside their filenames. You may mark as many
- files as you wish. If you type the BACK ARROW key all marked files will be
- unmarked, and all unmarked files will be marked. If you wish to copy an
- entire disk just type the BACK ARROW key. If you wish to copy all the files
- on a disk except for a few, just mark the files you don't want then type
- BACK ARROW.
-
- SCRATCH - scratches files. First you must enter the device number of the
- disk you wish to use after which the files on that disk will be displayed.
- From here on it works just like the COPY command.
-
- RENAME - renames a file. It works the same way, too. Just follow the
- prompts.
-
- Selecting SETUP causes a sub-menu to drop down with two entries:
-
- SOURCE DEVICE - sets the device from which files will copied from.
-
- DESTINATION DEVICE - sets the device to which files will copied to.
-
- Select QUIT when you are finished using CPY. You will be returned to
- the 128 SHELL system, which will still be active. To get back to LOADSTAR
- 128, if it's in drive 8, just reset the computer.

- FENDER HERE AGAIN: In this issue's FORUM, P.J. Devine asks why we can't put
- out a 1571-formatted LOADSTAR 128. Well, we can't, but with COM.CPY all you
- need to do is format the destination disk as a two-sided 1571 disk and copy
- all of Side One onto it. Then copy just the programs below the second
- divider file from Side Two. The format command senses which type of drive
- you're using and formats accordingly.
