  6.     3-D BREAKOUT is a 3-Dimensional
  7. version of the original game, with the
  8. wall in the distance and with the ball
  9. apparently moving in and out of the
  10. screen at you. The player is required
  11. to hit the ball back towards the wall
  12. with the joystick controlled bat (Port
  13. 2) in order to knock the wall down and
  14. score points.
  15.  
  16.     The game differs from the original
  17. in two ways. First, at high scores,
  18. the bat does NOT reduce in size and
  19. secondly, when the ball is hit through
  20. a gap in the wall it does bounce back
  21. and forth BEHIND the wall and breaks
  22. through the wall at random. The game
  23. gradually speeds up as you score more
  24. points until it plays at twice the
  25. starting speed.

  27.     The speed increases occur at 400,
  28. 800, 1200, 2000, 4000, and 10000
  29. points, and if you can get to that
  30. stage, you must have faster reflexes
  31. than the author!

  33.     The game starts with three balls,
  34. and adds a ball for every 1000 points
  35. scored. Also, when you succeed in
  36. clearing the screen, you get a bonus
  37. of another three balls -- up to a
  38. maximum of nine.

  40.     The game can be paused by pressing
  41. any key, and restarted by pressing the
  42. space-bar. To start or restart a game
  43. (if you should happen to miss a ball)
  44. simply press FIRE on the joystick.

  49. fascinated with the illusion of
  50. perspective. 3-D on a flat, 2-D screen
  51. (or paper or canvas or whatever) is
  52. always an illusion.

  54. In computational terms, it is an
  55. "expensive" illusion -- especially for
  56. ray casting as performed with MOOD and
  57. PC/Game Box virtual realities. Here,
  58. carefully designed sprites create the
  59. effect -- and a sweet effect it is!
