- 3-D BREAKOUT is a 3-Dimensional
- version of the original game, with the
- wall in the distance and with the ball
- apparently moving in and out of the
- screen at you. The player is required
- to hit the ball back towards the wall
- with the joystick controlled bat (Port
- 2) in order to knock the wall down and
- score points.
-
- The game differs from the original
- in two ways. First, at high scores,
- the bat does NOT reduce in size and
- secondly, when the ball is hit through
- a gap in the wall it does bounce back
- and forth BEHIND the wall and breaks
- through the wall at random. The game
- gradually speeds up as you score more
- points until it plays at twice the
- starting speed.
-
- The speed increases occur at 400,
- 800, 1200, 2000, 4000, and 10000
- points, and if you can get to that
- stage, you must have faster reflexes
- than the author!
-
- The game starts with three balls,
- and adds a ball for every 1000 points
- scored. Also, when you succeed in
- clearing the screen, you get a bonus
- of another three balls -- up to a
- maximum of nine.
-
- The game can be paused by pressing
- any key, and restarted by pressing the
- space-bar. To start or restart a game
- (if you should happen to miss a ball)
- simply press FIRE on the joystick.

- [DAVE'S AFTERSHOT:] I have always been
- fascinated with the illusion of
- perspective. 3-D on a flat, 2-D screen
- (or paper or canvas or whatever) is
- always an illusion.
-
- In computational terms, it is an
- "expensive" illusion -- especially for
- ray casting as performed with MOOD and
- PC/Game Box virtual realities. Here,
- carefully designed sprites create the
- effect -- and a sweet effect it is!
-
- A big thanks to Chris Ryan and
- Commodore Gazette for finding this
- nice little PD game. The Gazette is a
- great source of Public Domain
- software, collected on 5.25 or 3.5
- disks. To get in touch with Chris,
