  11.     Just wanted to let everyone know
  12. that the new HD-DOS+ is close to being
  13. ready and is just one more thing to
  14. look forward to at the upcoming EXPO
  15. in May.

  17.     If all goes well over the next two
  18. months, HD-DOS+ should be ready to
  19. ship to those who have pre-ordered it
  20. and also to those who have purchased a
  21. new CMD-HD since August 2001. It will
  22. be installed into all new CMD-HD's
  23. that are built once it's completed.
  24.  
  25.     From the way it looks, the only
  26. way it might not be ready to ship at
  27. EXPO time is if there are any bugs in
  28. the system. And even if that is the
  29. case, I plan to put on a good
  30. presentation of the new system at the
  31. EXPO.

  33.     Here's a brief rundown of the new
  34. features:
  35.  
  36. * Native partitions operate a little
  37.   faster.
  38.  
  39. * Built-in print spooler is
  40.   functional. The HD watches for data
  41.   being sent to device 4 (or 5) and
  42.   captures the data to a PRINTER
  43.   partition and while data is still
  44.   coming in, it gets spooled out to
  45.   the printer or printer interface
  46.   attached to the AUXILIARY port on
  47.   the back of the HD. The HD can
  48.   capture the data much faster than
  49.   most printers can. Even while data
  50.   is still being sent to the printer,
  51.   the HD can be accessed normally for
  52.   loading and saving, etc.

  54. * New features are implemented to aid
  55.   programmers in accessing SCSI
  56.   devices attached to the system.
  57.  
  58. * Two new partition types are added.
  59.   Extended Native partitions and
  60.   Extended Foreign partitions.
  61.   Extended native partitions can be up
  62.   to 4gb in size and include features
  63.   that help new software operate more
  64.   efficiently. Extended foreign
  65.   partitions can be up to 8gb in size
  66.   and are designed mainly for data
  67.   storage that does not require a file
  68.   system.

  70. * As for the maximum size of SCSI
  71.   mechanism allowed, nobody makes one
  72.   that big yet.
  73.  
  74. * There is a reserved 2048 byte
  75.   buffer in memory for future CD-ROM
  76.   usage. Or for software that needs a
  77.   large buffer.

  79. * Disk images are supported. For
  80.   instance, you can copy as many D64
  81.   images into an Extended native
  82.   partition as you like and be able to
  83.   access any of them as though they
  84.   were a real partition. A D64 image
  85.   can be attached to an existing 1541
  86.   partition. It will remain there
  87.   until the drive is reset and then
  88.   the original partition will once
  89.   again be visible there. You can do
  90.   this for as many partitions as you'd
  91.   like up to the maximum of 254. You
  92.   can store thousands of image files
  93.   into an extended native partition.
  94.   Over 23,000 D64 files will fit into
  95.   a 4gb partition. D71, D81, and FD
  96.   disk images are also supported.

  98. * We've always been able to select a
  99.   partition from the front panel
  100.   switches, but there is also a new
  101.   combination you can use. Press and
  102.   hold the SWAP 9 button to move to
  103.   the next partition or press and hold
  104.   the SWAP 8 button to move to the
  105.   previous partition. This feature
  106.   allows you to have two or more disk
  107.   image files visible in adjacent
  108.   partitions and perform the same
  109.   operation as if you were to switch
  110.   disks in a real 1541.

  113.     The new system includes a new rom
  114. module that looks like a 1541 JiffyDOS
  115. rom with a switch. This allows you to
  116. use either the new HD-DOS+ or the last
  117. one that CMD introduced. The
  118. installation utility will install both
  119. software versions onto the hard disk
  120. without losing any existing data in
  121. your partitions. An original HD
  122. Utilities disk is included along with
  123. a new disk with new utilities
  124. specifically for the new HD-DOS+. It
  125. also includes a manual supplement to
  126. go along your existing HD manual.
