- Bluegrass music is rooted in the
- traditional music of southern
- Appalachia. It features the same
- instruments used by the old mountain
- dance-groups: mandolin, banjo, and
- fiddle.
-
- Bluegrass first reached a wide
- audience when Bill Monroe and the
- Bluegrass Boys began to play at the
- Grand Ole Opry in 1939. In the 50s
- and early 60s, many of the best known
- bluegrass tunes were performed by
- Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs and
- their Foggy Mountain Boys. Their
- "Ballad of Jed Clampett," the theme of
- the TV series "The Beverly
- Hillbillies," gained national
- attention for the group and most
- importantly for bluegrass music.
- Today, you may hear the bluegrass
- influence behind many soft- and
- country-rock songs.
-
- GRASSROOTS JUKEBOX plays a
- collection of eight bluegrass tunes
- and bluegrass arrangements of
- traditional tunes:
-
- Arkansas Traveller
- Double Eagle
- Rocky Top
- Cripple Creek
- Old Virginny
- Cumberland Gap
- Liza Jane
- Old Dan Tucker
-
- Although it is a relatively new
- form of music, bluegrass has come to
- symbolize an older, unspoiled America.
- We hope GRASSROOTS JUKEBOX shows why.
