  6. [DAVE'S PREFACE]: Oh, the weather
  7. outside is colder. Friends just aren't
  8. interested in a Pool Party or Backyard
  9. Barbeque. It's time to drag out "Old
  10. Brown Betty" (the early C-64 you never
  11. had the heart to throw away) and plug
  12. it to the TV set. Call your friends
  13. and invite them to a "JEAPORDY Party!"
  14.  
  15. The "moderator" sits at the keyboard,
  16. with the two players at either side,
  17. fingers poised over their "response
  18. buttons." The rest is better than TV
  19. -- because it's live!

  23.     So....you're pretty good at trivia
  24. games are you? Your pies are always
  25. filled to overflowing during TRIVIAL
  26. PURSUIT? You always have the answers
  27. ---but what about the questions?
  28.  
  29. QUICK---
  30.  
  31.     The category is "SIT-COMS", and a
  32. correct response is worth $300. The
  33. answer is ---- 'The character played
  34. by Gleason in the HONEYMOONERS'. But
  35. what is the question?
  36.  
  37.     If you answered, 'Who is Ralph
  38. Kramden', CATEGORY SHOWDOWN might
  39. become your favorite trivia game. If
  40. you haven't guessed yet, CATEGORY
  41. SHOWDOWN is like a home computer
  42. version of JEPORADY(tm), and has over
  43. 60 categories of mind teasing
  44. questions.
  45.  
  46.     When the game starts, you will be
  47. asked for the name of Player 1 and
  48. Player 2. If, for some reason you want
  49. to play by yourself, just press RETURN
  50. for the name of Player 2. Next, the
  51. computer will ask you for a response
  52. key for both Player 1 and 2. The
  53. response key is that key on the
  54. keyboard that you will press when you
  55. think you know the answer to a
  56. question. If you can press your key
  57. before your opponent presses his when
  58. the computer asks the question, you
  59. get first crack at answering it.
  60.  
  61.     After the first few formalities,
  62. the computer will select 6 categories
  63. from which to choose. The complete
  64. names of the categories will be listed
  65. and the computer will tell who has
  66. control of the board.

  68.   After this, a screen with 6 columns
  69. and 5 rows will be displayed. This is
  70. the actual screen from which you will
  71. pick a category and a money amount.
  72. Towards the bottom of the screen you
  73. will see a statement telling you who
  74. gets to choose a question. The
  75. columns are numbered and you simply
  76. enter the number of the category you
  77. want. Next you enter the money amount
  78. you want to play for.  You cannot
  79. choose a category that has no
  80. remaining questions.

  82.   During the game, entering a "c"
  83. when choosing a category displays a
  84. list of the current categories and
  85. scores. Entering a "q" at this point
  86. quits the game. You receive the
  87. option of beginning a new game or
  88. game or returning to LOADSTAR.

  90.   After you have chosen a category and
  91. a money amount, the computer will
  92. display your question. At this point,
  93. whoever thinks he knows the correct
  94. answer should press his response key.
  95. If no one presses a key after a
  96. certain amount of time, a timer will
  97. sound, the answer will be shown and
  98. you will return to the main game
  99. board to try another question.
  100.  
  101.   If someone presses a response key,
  102. that player will be asked to answer
  103. the question. If it is answered
  104. correctly, that player will be awarded
  105. the chosen money amount. If the
  106. question is answered incorrectly, then
  107. the other player will have a chance to
  108. answer the question. If neither
  109. player correctly answers the question,
  110. then play returns to the main game
  111. board.

  113.   It is important to note that every
  114. time you attempt to answer a question
  115. and are incorrect, the money amount is
  116. deducted from your account. This
  117. keeps the game interesting. In fact,
  118. you can wind up with a negative score.
  119.  
  120.   When all questions have been chosen,
  121. if either player has a positive amount
  122. of money, a new category will be
  123. chosen. If a player has any money, he
  124. can place a wager on one final
  125. question. If both players have some
  126. money, then both players will attempt
  127. to answer the same question. As
  128. before, if you answer the question
  129. correctly, you are awarded the amount
  130. you wagered. If your answer is
  131. incorrect, you lose the amount you
  132. wagered.

  134.   After the final scoring, the
  135. computer will decide the winner. This
  136. is, of course, based upon which player
  137. has the most money. At this point,
  138. you will be asked if you want to test
  139. your trivia knowledge again with
  140. CATAGORY SHOWDOWN.

  146. with this program a bit -- using Lee
  147. Novak's QuickSmith music processor to
  148. write a little ditty you all will
  149. recognize. And though I did not have
  150. time to create any new categories, I
  151. have a answer/question writer. Send me
