  6.    The technology of the combine
  7. changed the ways of harvest. In the
  8. days of separate reaping and
  9. thrashing, the shocks of wheat were
  10. left to dry and "cure" for several
  11. weeks. But with the combine, the wheat
  12. must be cut during a narrow window of
  13. opportunity.

  15.    The weeks before harvest are tense
  16. with the stress of preparation and
  17. anticipation.

  27.    The farmer must be a technical jack
  28. of all trades, able to repair and
  29. maintain complex equipment. Once the
  30. cutting starts, he won't really have
  31. time to stop for the inevitale
  32. breakdowns.

  34.    Recently, impliment dealers are
  35. supplying farmers with a "repair
  36. pack," a kit filled with all the spare
  37. parts one might need. During harvest,
  38. the farmer does not need to rush to
  39. town to buy a part -- just get it out
  40. of the kit. After the cutting, the
  41. pack is returned to the dealership and
  42. parts used are paid for.

  50.    As The Day approaches, nervous
  51. farmers watch the sky for storms. Hail
  52. is called "The Big White Harvester in
  53. the Sky." So many things can go wrong
  54. before the grain is in the bin.

  56.    The elevators reduce the price paid
  57. if the wheat includes too much dirt
  58. and foreign matter, or if the kernals
  59. contain too much moisture. One farmer
  60. around here will repeatedly cut short
  61. swaths, scoop up a coffee can full of
  62. grain, and rush to the elevator for a
  63. moisture check. After four or five
  64. trips, he knows his field is ready to
  65. cut.

  76.    Then the rush is on. The combine
  77. can collect a small amount of grain in
  78. its bin. So with every pass or two
  79. around the field, the operator must
  80. stop to unload into a truck or grain
  81. hauling trailer.

  83.    Crews work to achieve the greatest
  84. effeciency. Grain haulers may travel
  85. along side the combine while being
  86. filled. Here, one truck collects seed
  87. from two combines at once.
