- "Dave, take a look at this!", Russ
- said as he put a new cartridge into
- the Atari console. "There's this new
- company called Activision, and they
- are kicking butt!"
-
- Russ was my video game friend, the
- undefeated champion at Space Invaders
- and a collector of everything that
- would plug into an Atari. The game he
- now brought up was PITFALL. As I now
- remember it, we had already done
- dozens of shoot 'em ups, fly 'em ups,
- and a host of maze games. Here was a
- new genre -- the Run and Jump.
-
- As with all things involving a
- joystick, Russ became proficient
- almost immediately. On the other hand,
- it [was] his game, and I would bet he
- stayed up nights perfecting his
- skills.
-
- That was a long, long time ago --
- over 20 years. Video games have come a
- long ways. The whole world of
- computers is completely different. But
- Pitfall is still fun -- if you can get
- that dang fire button pressed in time!
-
- I have asked Robin Harbron
- (Macbeth to Sceners) to share some of
- his considerable knowledge about the
- Atari 2600, which is on this issue
- entitled "Atari 2600". Be sure to read
- it and gasp!
