  9.     Just when I had paid about a year
  10. on the high interest consumer loan for
  11. the C-128, the Amiga hit the streets.
  12. I had become accustomed to that sad
  13. sinking feeling one gets about a year
  14. after purchasing a computer. I bought
  15. a TRS-80 Model I in 1979. By 1980, the
  16. Model III was out -- slicker, faster,
  17. lower AND upper case text characters,
  18. built-in disk drive.
  19.  
  20.     But this was worse. The C-128 and
  21. its 64 mode was a tremendous graphics
  22. computer. (Still is!) But the Amiga
  23. had graphics capabilities far beyond
  24. anything on the market. In fact, the
  25. whole PC world is only now beginning
  26. to really compete.

  28.     The store demo for the Amiga
  29. needed to show that LARGE objects
  30. could be moved and manipulated easily.
  31. So the Amiga Ball bounced into being.
  32.  
  33.     To paraphrase a song from [Annie]
  34. [Get Your Gun]: "Anything they can do,
  35. we can do also. We have been doing it
  36. longer than them!"

  38.     And so it was with the big Amiga
  39. Ball. I saw a similar demo from
  40. Computer! Gazette in the late 80's
  41. that bounced the prodiguous red and
  42. white ball around the screen. This
  43. demo goes a step further -- solid or
  44. wire-frame, and a nice shadow effect.

  46.     Back then, we asked, "How did they
  47. [do] that?" You don't hear that
  48. question anymore. Seems kids just
  49. expect dramatic 3-D effects, blazing
  50. sound, and slick quality. In short,
  51. they expect to be entertained and
  52. titillated -- and have no thought of
  53. creating their own effects.

  55.     Are there any programmers left?
  56. Are there any young hackers who get an
  57. idea and diligently work out the
  58. logical necessities? Our commercial
  59. consumer economy hopes not. But every
  60. now and then, a clever person or two
  61. will slip through the cracks in the
  62. formica -- like the Derocher boys and
  63. Johnny Harris or Lee Novak before
  64. them. They come to the C-64 because
  65. here anyone can TRY anything.
