- BASIC GAME PLAY
- {SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}
-
- You play the game by rolling an
- 8-sided die and progessing from
- January 1st to December 31st.
-
- You start the game with $1000. If
- that amount falls to $0 then you are
- broke and the game is over.
-
- The game is played on 12 calendar
- pages ("boards"). Each month page
- starts on Sunday the 1st (Rent Day).
- Each Monday is Expense Day, each
- Saturday is Grocery Day, and each
- Friday is Payday. The debit/credit
- for a particular day is only
- effective if you land on that day.
-
- There are also 8 special days per
- month, some GOOD (you win
- cash/goods), some BAD (you lose
- cash/goods), and some DOUBTFUL (you
- win or lose cash/goods). Also,
- every time you roll the die Willy
- picks a secret number and if your
- roll equals that number you activate
- a time transporter that can move you
- backward or forward up to 4 months.
-
- There are two levels of play, CHICKEN
- and GAMBLER. In the CHICKEN mode you
- decide whether to risk a DOUBTFUL day
- or to use the transporter. On GOOD
- and BAD days you MUST roll the die to
- continue.
-
- When you get within 8 days of
- December 31st you are given ten tries
- (rolls) to reach EXACTLY the 31st.
- If you fail you are assessed a
- penalty and passed to the Winners'
- Box. If you go past the 31st four
- times, all your assets are seized (you
- are broke) and the game is over. At
- any time during the ten rolls you may
- choose to concede (F6), in which case
- you must pay a healthy penalty -- but
- that's still better than going broke.
-
- The completed game is saved to disk
- and you can use it to Challenge the
- Champions and maybe make the CHICKEN
- or GAMBLER Hall Of Fame.
-
- During play there are several hot
- keys that permit you to:
-
- _ - Abort, which usually takes you
- back to the introductory menu,
-
- ^ - Help, which calls up a general
- or specific Help Screen,
-
- F1 - Quit, which returns you to
- LOADSTAR or BASIC, as applicable,
-
- F3 - Save, which saves the game to
- the present month/day,
-
- F5 - Redo, which takes you back to
- the last Save position,
-
- F7 - Roll, which rolls the die,
-
- F2 - Assets review, lists cash and
- goods owned by you,
-
- \ - Special Day Data, available
- whenever you land on a Special Day,
- reveals information regarding the
- day.
-
- Note that Abort, and Quit, permit a
- change-of-mind and a "Save game to
- present" option.

- On exiting these instructions, and
- choosing to continue at the query, or
- upon refusing instructions on bootup,
- you are asked for your name and PIN
- (Personal Identification Number).
- The PIN will be discussed later. You
- are then presented with the Option
- screen. Above the 9-item Options
- menu are two status lines. The top
- one identifies the PROGram and GAME
- (data files) drive device numbers.
- The second shows the Security
- (ON/OFF) and Player (CHICKEN/GAMBLER)
- status. Both lines are discussed
- relative to the associated menu
- items.

-
- Upon initial bootup, no setup file
- exists. The setup file would contain
- the drive device numbers for the boot
- (PROGram) and Game Data (GAME) files,
- and the Security Status.
-
- The default setup is as follows:
-
- SINGLE DRIVE: Both drive numbers
- the same and a common PROG/GAME disk.
- Security OFF.
-
- MULTI-DRIVE: The lowest active
- device number is the PROGram drive
- and the next higher is the GAME drive.
- (i.e., different PROG and GAME
- disks). Security OFF.
-
- If the set of defaults is acceptable
- then there is no need for a Setup
- File. If menu options 6 or 7 are
- invoked then a Setup File is created.
- The action of the Security option is
- explained later.
-
- Upon bootup, the boot device number
- becomes the temporary PROG device
- number for loading the BASIC game
- files. The program then looks for a
- Setup File. If one is found then the
- listed device numbers are checked and
- if active (ON) are assigned as per
- Setup File data. Note that if either
- assigned drive is not active the
- program behaves as if there was no
- Setup File. With no setup file, all
- possible devices (8 to 24) are
- scanned and the first one found
- active is assigned as PROG drive, and
- the second the GAME drive. If only
- one is active then it is used for
- both.
-
- If you wish to change the drive
- assignments as shown on the Options
- Screen, select Option 6. You are
- asked to enter the PROG device number
- (8 to 24) and the device is checked
- for availability (if it is not ON you
- are given the opportunity to activate
- it), you then go through the same
- procedure for the GAME device number.
-
- If both device numbers are the same
- you are asked if both sets of files
- (PROG/GAME) are on the same disk. If
- you say NO then a "disk reminder"
- feature is flagged (as indicated by
- "/D" after GAME drive number). When
- you have approved all your entries,
- the Setup File is created and you are
- returned to the menu choices.

-
- Willy's paranoia caused him to add a
- security system to his game. If only
- one player ever uses the game, or
- there is no possibility of
- mischievious misuse of Game Data
- files then security is not required.
- In that case the PIN is unimportant
- and the default PIN (RETURN) can be
- used. However, if it is later
- decided to secure the files (i.e.,
- Security ON), any files with the
- default PIN will be unprotected. (If
- there is a possibility of future
- Security requirements it is wise to
- use a valid 4-digit PIN at the
- start.)
-
- If you activate Option 7 you will be
- notified of the status of Security
- and asked if you wish to change. If
- it was OFF you will be asked for a
- Master Code and the status will be
- changed. You are then told the
- status of Security and asked if you
- want to change it. Note that if you
- wish to switch OFF security you must
- first enter the Master Code. Also
- note that Security ON locks out the
- STOP and RUN/RESTORE features so make
- sure you remember your Master Code.
-
- When you accept the security status
- the Setup File is updated/created.

- There are 5 levels of High Score per
- player status. The lowest number
- level is the highest rating. The
- highest score in any level is 65500.
- this means the highest score for the
- game is 375500 (65500 in level 1).
-
- There are no partial scores assigned
- during the game so only if a
- completed game is loaded can you
- access item #1 of the Records
- Office menu. A completed game not
- only activates item #1 but also shows
- your score for the High Score level
- shown in items #2 and #3 (below).
-
-
- ***** RECORDS OFFICE *****
-
- 1. Challenge Champions.
-
- 2. Review PLAYER ? List.
-
- 3. Delete PLAYER ? List.
-
- 4. Check other PLAYER levels.
-
- 5. Check (PLAYER) Lists.
-
- 6. Return to Menu.
-
- If Security is ON then Option 3 can
- only be activated by the Master Code.
-
- Option 3 has several opportunities
- for mind changing.
-
- If Option 1 is accessed then the
- score is checked against the list
- and, if it is one of the top ten, you
- are asked to enter your name in the
- appropriate place on the list. The
- high score file is then updated.
-
- If, when you first access the
- Records Office, the appropriate High
- Score file does not exist, you are
- given the opportunity to create it.
