- HUGGY BEAR'S FIRST CHRISTMAS
-
- by William O. Nelson
-
- One of the big mysteries here at
- SOFTDISK has been the popularity of
- Alfredo, the pint-sized (and
- masochistic) hero of dozens of
- misadventures. Perhaps it's because he
- represented "everyman" in his struggle
- against the unfair forces of nature.
-
- Well, Alfredo now has a little
- companion, the lovable yet stuffed,
- Huggy Bear. He comes to you just in
- time for Christmas.
-
- Alfredo and Huggy Bear haven't
- met, really, I just consider them
- companions because they are both stars
- of their own animations on LOADSTAR.
- There's no interactivity in these
- stories -- you can't control the hero
- -- but you can enjoy the scenery and
- the plot as it unfolds.
-
- Huggy Bear is several steps above
- Alfredo because he lives in a colorful
- world of solid objects and creatures.
- He's a sprite, not a stick character.
-
- DAVE'S NOTE: Alfredo may have been a
- sprite also in his C-64 incarnations,
- but his heritage is Apple II -- and it
- shows. :)
-
- Huggie also a lonely little bear at
- the beginning of the story, sitting on
- the top shelf of the toy store where
- no loving child can reach him.
-
- This story is one that the younger
- kids can enjoy, even if they haven't
- learned to read. Of course, it will be
- better if you read the text pages to
- your youngsters.
-
- It's too bad that sprite animation
- and graphic design requires so many
- POKEs in BASIC 2.0, or there might be
- a lot more programs like this for
- kids.
-
- DAVE AGAIN: But now we have Sprite
- editors and bload commands!
-
- It's not easy to coordinate everything
- that's happening on screen. If you
- don't believe me, try it. Then send me
- the program and we'll have another
- program for our youngest LOADSTAR
- fans.
-
- Our thanks to William Nelson for
- sending us this story in time for
- Christmas, when adults and children
- alike will be nestled in their homes,
- doing things together. LOADSTAR
- doesn't always aim for the beautiful
- innocence of the very young, but when
- we do, it's great having stories like
- HUGGY BEAR'S FIRST CHRISTMAS to do it
- with.
