- Program by Kenneth Barsky

- Chanukah (or Hanukkah) is a
- holiday that celebrates the revolt of
- the Hebrews against the religious
- oppression of the Greco/Syrian
- empire.
-
- When the oppressors had been
- driven out, the Hebrews restored the
- Temple, but found that they had only
- enough holy oil to burn one night.
- But a miracle happened, and the lamps
- burned for eight days.
-
- Chanukah is called the Festival of
- Lights, because it's customary to
- light the lights on the menorah to
- recall this miracle. We light candles
- on each night for eight nights;
- starting with one candle (and the
- shammas -- the sexton candle) for the
- first night, and add one candle each
- following night.
-
- CHANUKAH simulates the lighting of
- the Chanukah lights (right to left
- like Hebrew is read) to the
- accompaniment of two tunes familiar to
- this holiday: "O! Chanukah" and "Mi
- Y'Malel". The two songs alternate,
- one each night. If you press a key,
- the program will move to the next
- night. When a song ends, it also goes
- to the next night. After the eighth
- night you may celebrate Chanukah again
- or return to LOADSTAR.
-
- Enjoy, and Mazel Tov! (Good luck!)
