  7.     Chanukah (or Hanukkah) is a
  8. holiday that celebrates the revolt of
  9. the Hebrews against the religious
  10. oppression of the Greco/Syrian
  11. empire.
  12.  
  13.     When the oppressors had been
  14. driven out, the Hebrews restored the
  15. Temple, but found that they had only
  16. enough holy oil to burn one night.
  17. But a miracle happened, and the lamps
  18. burned for eight days.
  19.  
  20.     Chanukah is called the Festival of
  21. Lights, because it's customary to
  22. light the lights on the menorah to
  23. recall this miracle. We light candles
  24. on each night for eight nights;
  25. starting with one candle (and the
  26. shammas -- the sexton candle) for the
  27. first night, and add one candle each
  28. following night.

  30.    CHANUKAH simulates the lighting of
  31. the Chanukah lights (right to left
  32. like Hebrew is read) to the
  33. accompaniment of two tunes familiar to
  34. this holiday: "O! Chanukah" and "Mi
  35. Y'Malel". The two songs alternate,
  36. one each night. If you press a key,
  37. the program will move to the next
  38. night. When a song ends, it also goes
  39. to the next night. After the eighth
  40. night you may celebrate Chanukah again
  41. or return to LOADSTAR.
