  7.     Imagine, if you will, the Old West
  8. of 1880. Communities are springing up
  9. every hundred miles or so, wherever
  10. there's a water hole, gold strike, or
  11. bordello. There are fortunes to be
  12. made in these little burgs but the big
  13. bucks won't roll in until each town is
  14. linked to the others by a well-kept
  15. trail. The country is waiting for you
  16. to become a trail baron and TRAIL WEST
  17. is the program that can propel you
  18. into that enviable position. Of course
  19. there will be competitors, but that
  20. won't stop someone as ruthless as you.
  21.  
  22.     TRAIL WEST is your chance to
  23. challenge one, two or three of your
  24. friends to a not-necessarily-friendly
  25. game that will tax your strategic and
  26. tactical powers. Money is the
  27. object, and progress is the product.
  28. There's a whole new empire to be
  29. built and you've always liked the
  30. title of emperor. Or empress.

  32.     Richard and Sally Daley have done
  33. a bangup job with this economic
  34. simulation. There are detailed
  35. instructions that you can print out
  36. for future reference and a very
  37. attractive and easy-to-use interface.

  39.  [NOTE:] You MUST have a joystick
  40. plugged into port 2 to play this
  41. game.
  42.  
  43.     Everything is menu-driven with
  44. windows that respond to the joystick
  45. so that after entering the names of
  46. the players, there's no need to use
  47. the keyboard. Just pass the joystick
  48. from player to player and please
  49. refrain from bouncing it off anyone's
  50. skull, although that might be
  51. tempting. The Old West is a
  52. dog-eat-dog world and there is a
  53. definite shortage of dogs.

  55.     All of the features are explained
  56. in the instructions as well as some
  57. of the better strategies, so gather
  58. up a friend or three and start
  59. building those trails. Your empire
  60. is waiting.

  63.     Because of the intricacies of
  64. this program, once you enter the game
  65. you cannot return to the LOADSTAR
  66. menu unless you power down and
  67. re-boot LOADSTAR.

  71.  [Dave's Note:] Trail West is based
  72. loosely on a 3-M Bookshelf game called
  73. "Aquire." The metaphor is different,
  74. and certain rules have been changed.
  75. The result is better in some ways.

  77.  I mention this because Aquire has
  78. been a family favorite for over 30
  79. years and played religiously whenever
  80. the clan congregates. And from the
  81. many battles to control and prosper,
  82. I can give you one important piece of
  83. advice:

  85.  Pay attention to what your opponents
  86. own! Holding a majority of stock will
  87. be the key. Getting that majority will
  88. strain your resources.
  89.  
  90.  And remember -- after the game is
  91. over, that SOB who snookered you out
  92. of your rightful empire is once again
  93. your friend and/or relative. We do
  94. things while playing games that we
  95. would never attempt in real life.
