- Imagine, if you will, the Old West
- of 1880. Communities are springing up
- every hundred miles or so, wherever
- there's a water hole, gold strike, or
- bordello. There are fortunes to be
- made in these little burgs but the big
- bucks won't roll in until each town is
- linked to the others by a well-kept
- trail. The country is waiting for you
- to become a trail baron and TRAIL WEST
- is the program that can propel you
- into that enviable position. Of course
- there will be competitors, but that
- won't stop someone as ruthless as you.
-
- TRAIL WEST is your chance to
- challenge one, two or three of your
- friends to a not-necessarily-friendly
- game that will tax your strategic and
- tactical powers. Money is the
- object, and progress is the product.
- There's a whole new empire to be
- built and you've always liked the
- title of emperor. Or empress.
-
- Richard and Sally Daley have done
- a bangup job with this economic
- simulation. There are detailed
- instructions that you can print out
- for future reference and a very
- attractive and easy-to-use interface.
-
- [NOTE:] You MUST have a joystick
- plugged into port 2 to play this
- game.
-
- Everything is menu-driven with
- windows that respond to the joystick
- so that after entering the names of
- the players, there's no need to use
- the keyboard. Just pass the joystick
- from player to player and please
- refrain from bouncing it off anyone's
- skull, although that might be
- tempting. The Old West is a
- dog-eat-dog world and there is a
- definite shortage of dogs.
-
- All of the features are explained
- in the instructions as well as some
- of the better strategies, so gather
- up a friend or three and start
- building those trails. Your empire
- is waiting.
-
-
- Because of the intricacies of
- this program, once you enter the game
- you cannot return to the LOADSTAR
- menu unless you power down and
- re-boot LOADSTAR.

- [Dave's Note:] Trail West is based
- loosely on a 3-M Bookshelf game called
- "Aquire." The metaphor is different,
- and certain rules have been changed.
- The result is better in some ways.
-
- I mention this because Aquire has
- been a family favorite for over 30
- years and played religiously whenever
- the clan congregates. And from the
- many battles to control and prosper,
- I can give you one important piece of
- advice:
-
- Pay attention to what your opponents
- own! Holding a majority of stock will
- be the key. Getting that majority will
- strain your resources.
-
- And remember -- after the game is
- over, that SOB who snookered you out
- of your rightful empire is once again
- your friend and/or relative. We do
- things while playing games that we
- would never attempt in real life.
-
- That's why it is called "Play."
