  2.           CHANUKAH BLESSING

  8.     All they wanted to do was live in
  9. the land God gave them and worship at
  10. their Temple in Jerusalem. But then
  11. Alexander the Great came a-conquering,
  12. and spreading his marvelous Greek
  13. culture across the known world.
  14.  
  15.     After Alexander's untimely death,
  16. the Empire was divided between his
  17. generals. Judah was under the rule (at
  18. various times) of the Ptolmy Dynasty
  19. of Egypt and the Seleucidic Empire of
  20. Syria. The pressure to give up their
  21. strange, invisible, One God -- and the
  22. customs and commandments that marked
  23. the covenant -- became intolerable.
  24.  
  25.     The low point occured when
  26. Antiochus Epiphanius decreed that
  27. idols of Zeus, in his own esteemed
  28. likeness, would be raised in every
  29. place of worship in his domain. For
  30. polytheists, this was no big deal. But
  31. when a graven image of a god/ruler was
  32. placed in the Holy of Holies of the
  33. Temple, it was called the "desecrating
  34. sacrilege."

  36.     A devout family rose up to lead
  37. the rebellion. The Maccabees (which
  38. means "Hammer") threw off the evil
  39. empire and the Temple was finally
  40. cleansed and restored.
  41.  
  42.     This great event of regaining
  43. their national sovereignty and
  44. religious wholeness would forever be
  45. remembered by the feast of Chanukah.
  46.  
  47.     (The Maccabean rule lasted until
  48. Herod the Great sold out to Rome.
  49. During the last year of his reign, he
  50. is said to have been surprised to hear
  51. about a newborn "King of the Jews."
  52. But that's another story and another
  53. tradition.)

  58.     I have made several improvements
  59. on this program which first appeared
  60. in Gazette in December '96. Now you
  61. can light Chanukah lights and the
  62. program plays Chanukah melodies. These
  63. are the blessings (prayers) that are
  64. said when lighting the candles.
  65.  
  66.     Another change - on the suggestion
  67. of Bernard Sussman - the lights now
  68. light left to right (instead of normal
  69. Hebrew reading right to left) so that
  70. the most recent addition is lighted
  71. first.  Also I've added another melody
  72. - Light One Candle, performed by
  73. Peter, Paul and Mary.
