  4.     The Impossible Happened.
  5.     The United States of America
  6.     was attacked on the mainland.

  8.   For the first time since the War
  9.   of 1812, American soil was left
  10.   smoldering -- Hate daring us to
  11.   crumble in fear.

  14.   Some say the airliner downed in
  15.   Pennsylvania was targeted for the
  16.   White House. The terrorists could
  17.   not have known that the
  18.   Presidential Mansion is white
  19.   because it was painted after
  20.   being set afire in that earlier
  21.   attempt nearly 200 years ago,
  22.   when America was small and weak.

  26.   During the War of 1812, the most
  27.   powerful navy in the world tried
  28.   to enter the harbor at Baltimore.
  29.   During the night, they battered
  30.   Ft. McHenry mercilessly. But with
  31.   the dawn's early light, that star
  32.   spangled banner yet waved.

  36.   This is a vast and blessed land.
  37.   During our 225 years peoples of
  38.   every ethnic group and race have
  39.   struggled to find freedom and
  40.   destroy tyrrany. Freedom is not
  41.   a gift -- and no one will easily
  42.   take it away.

  46.   This is the country that has been
  47.   present whenever the world was in
  48.   need. This is the country that
  49.   extended help in rebuilding the
  50.   nations the Allies defeated. This
  51.   is the country that reaches out to
  52.   the out-stretched hands of the
  53.   poor of the world.

  57.     During times of peace, we are
  58.     prone to quibble about small
  59.     things. We were divided
  60.     politically a year before the
  61.     terrorist strike. Our debates
  62.     over peace and might, God and
  63.     rights, morals and freedom,
  64.     can be divisive.

  68.     But woe to ignorant evil who
  69.     confuses free discourse for
  70.     weakness. For in a minute, we
  71.     can unite under a common cause.
  72.     And when we are assured that
  73.     our path is right, we cannot be
  74.     stopped.

  78.    There is nothing romantic about
  79.    war. We do not enter into
  80.    conflict lightly. As in the past
  81.    we will muster the force needed
  82.    to root out and destroy this
  83.    evil.

  87.    For 5000 people gave their
  88.    lives, willy-nilly, as a down
  89.    payment on Freedom from terror.
  90.    Theirs is the first offering --
  91.    and shall not be in vain.
