- Canon Intros Color Bubble-Jet
- Printer 11/10/94 COSTA MESA,
- CALIFORNIA, U.S.A. 1994 NOV 10 (NB) -
- - Canon Computer Systems Inc. (CCSI)
- has introduced, what the company
- describes as, the "the ultimate color
- Bubble Jet printer for the small
- office/home office (SOHO) customer,"
- the BJC-600e.
-
- The new printer offers high
- resolution of 720 dots-per-inch (dpi)
- for monochrome and 360 dpi for color
- output, and one page-per- minute
- color speed. It also comes with
- bundled software: Canon's proprietary
- Color Advisor; and DogByte's
- Stationery Store, which reportedly
- allows users to "more easily achieve
- professional- looking color." The new
- BJC-600e is an upgrade of the BJC-
- 600.
-
- According to Peter Bergman, vice
- president of marketing at CCSI, the
- marketing techniques, like bundling
- exclusive software, will help Canon
- gain marketshare in the color ink-jet
- business. Canon's current overall
- share of the entire ink-jet market is
- 25 percent.
-
- Canon claims that the printer's
- individual cartridge system offers a
- "no waste" approach to ink cartridge
- replacement that helps keeps the
- cost-per-page low. Users only need to
- replace one ink cartridge as it is
- depleted, not the entire three-color
- cartridge system.
-
- Canon spokesperson Sherri
- Snelling said the BJC-600e's cost-
- per- page is just over 14 cents.
- According to Snelling, while this may
- seem like a small issue, it actually
- makes a considerable difference over
- time.
-
- The BJC-600e includes Canon's
- exclusive Color Advisor software. The
- company claims that the essence of
- the Color Advisor software is that it
- allows users to select their
- communications objectives, and then
- automatically pick the best colors
- for those objectives and instantly
- apply the color scheme to the
- document. Using the Color Advisor
- software and the BJC-600e users can
- automatically colorize documents,
- even if the application does not
- support color. Additionally, if the
- software does not support the
- complete color palette, the Color
- Advisor can print the entire range of
- colors anyway.
-
- The other bundled software, the
- Stationery Store adds the capability
- to create and print customized
- stationery, greeting cards, and
- announcements with matching
- envelopes.
-
- Canon says that Stationery Store,
- which has a $49 retail value, is an
- exclusive bundle with the BJC-600e.
- The printer ships with a Microsoft
- Window 3.1 driver and 20 scalable
- TrueType fonts. For users requiring
- PostScript capabilities, the BJC-
- 600e is compatible with a variety of
- software programs from third-party
- vendors such as Zenogrpahics' ZScript
- that interprets PostScript output.
-
- The BJC-600e also includes
- Canon's on-line Visual Guide that
- assists users on how to hook-up and
- operate the printer. The guide also
- answers basic questions about color.
-
- The BJC-600e will be available in
- late November through the mass market
- channel of more than 5,500
- storefronts nationwide. It has a
- suggested retail price of $549 with
- an estimated street price of $469-
- $499. The ink cartridges have a
- suggested retail price of $12.25
- (high capacity black) and $8 for each
- color (cyan, magenta or yellow).
-
- The BJC-600e includes Canon's
- unlimited toll-free technical
- assistance, a two-year limited
- warranty for parts and labor, and a
- 24-hour replacement unit.
