  7. - Canon Computer Systems Inc. (CCSI)
  8. has introduced, what the company
  9. describes as, the "the ultimate color
  10. Bubble Jet printer for the small
  11. office/home office (SOHO) customer,"
  12. the BJC-600e.

  14.     The new printer offers high
  15. resolution of 720 dots-per-inch (dpi)
  16. for monochrome and 360 dpi for color
  17. output, and one page-per- minute
  18. color speed. It also comes with
  19. bundled software: Canon's proprietary
  20. Color Advisor; and DogByte's
  21. Stationery Store, which reportedly
  22. allows users to "more easily achieve
  23. professional- looking color." The new
  24. BJC-600e is an upgrade of the BJC-
  25. 600.

  27.     According to Peter Bergman, vice
  28. president of marketing at CCSI, the
  29. marketing techniques, like bundling
  30. exclusive software, will help Canon
  31. gain marketshare in the color ink-jet
  32. business. Canon's current overall
  33. share of the entire ink-jet market is
  34. 25 percent.

  36.     Canon claims that the printer's
  37. individual cartridge system offers a
  38. "no waste" approach to ink cartridge
  39. replacement that helps keeps the
  40. cost-per-page low. Users only need to
  41. replace one ink cartridge as it is
  42. depleted, not the entire three-color
  43. cartridge system.

  46. Snelling said the BJC-600e's cost-
  47. per- page is just over 14 cents.
  48. According to Snelling, while this may
  49. seem like a small issue, it actually
  50. makes a considerable difference over
  51. time.

  53.     The BJC-600e includes Canon's
  54. exclusive Color Advisor software. The
  55. company claims that the essence of
  56. the Color Advisor software is that it
  57. allows users to select their
  58. communications objectives, and then
  59. automatically pick the best colors
  60. for those objectives and instantly
  61. apply the color scheme to the
  62. document. Using the Color Advisor
  63. software and the BJC-600e users can
  64. automatically colorize documents,
  65. even if the application does not
  66. support color. Additionally, if the
  67. software does not support the
  68. complete color palette, the Color
  69. Advisor can print the entire range of
  70. colors anyway.

  72.     The other bundled software, the
  73. Stationery Store adds the capability
  74. to create and print customized
  75. stationery, greeting cards, and
  76. announcements with matching
  77. envelopes.

  79.     Canon says that Stationery Store,
  80. which has a $49 retail value, is an
  81. exclusive bundle with the BJC-600e.
  82. The printer ships with a Microsoft
  83. Window 3.1 driver and 20 scalable
  84. TrueType fonts. For users requiring
  85. PostScript capabilities, the BJC-
  86. 600e is compatible with a variety of
  87. software programs from third-party
  88. vendors such as Zenogrpahics' ZScript
  89. that interprets PostScript output.

  91.     The BJC-600e also includes
  92. Canon's on-line Visual Guide that
  93. assists users on how to hook-up and
  94. operate the printer. The guide also
  95. answers basic questions about color.

  97.     The BJC-600e will be available in
  98. late November through the mass market
  99. channel of more than 5,500
  100. storefronts nationwide. It has a
  101. suggested retail price of $549 with
  102. an estimated street price of $469-
  103. $499. The ink cartridges have a
  104. suggested retail price of $12.25
  105. (high capacity black) and $8 for each
  106. color (cyan, magenta or yellow).

  108.     The BJC-600e includes Canon's
  109. unlimited toll-free technical
  110. assistance, a two-year limited
  111. warranty for parts and labor, and a
  112. 24-hour replacement unit.
