  15.   When I plugged my new FASTLOAD
  16.  
  17. cartridge in, I was surprised to see
  18.  
  19. that it didn't use any memory. The
  20.  
  21. only visible difference was the
  22.  
  23. appearance of the word FASTLOAD under
  24.  
  25. the READY prompt.
  26.  
  27.   Another nice surprise was having a
  28.  
  29. WEDGE ready at all times. The FASTLOAD
  30.  
  31. wedge supports all of the DOS 5.1
  32.  
  33. commands except for ^prgmname (run
  34.  
  35. program). Holding shift and pressing
  36.  
  37. run/stop automatically does a
  38.  
  39. LOAD"*",8,1:RUN. So far I have not
  40.  
  41. found one program that could not be
  42.  
  43. loaded with FASTLOAD.
  44.  
  45.   Faster? YES! Flight Simulator II
  46.  
  47. normally takes nearly three minutes to
  48.  
  49. load. With FASTLOAD it took less than
  50.  
  51. two minutes. Programs written in BASIC
  52.  
  53. load even faster. Eliza normally took
  54.  
  55. fifty two seconds. FASTLOAD reduced
  56.  
  57. it to twelve seconds.
  58.  
  59.   If the built in wedge and faster
  60.  
  61. loading weren't enough there is also a
  62.  
  63. copy program, file editing program,
  64.  
  65. track and sector editor and machine
  66.  
  67. code monitor built in. These can be
  68.  
  69. accessed by pressing "\" while in
  70.  
  71. basic mode. Having these handy
  72.  
  73. utilities on tap at all times is very
  74.  
  75. handy. By the way, the copy program
  76.  
  77. will not copy protected disks.
  78.  
  79.   I am impressed with the FASTLOAD
  80.  
  81. cartridge. I have found no serious (or
  82.  
  83. even minor) flaws in it. It has made
  84.  
  85. using the 1541 much faster and easier
  86.  
  87. for me. I give it five stars.

  90. >We at LOADSTAR do indeed use FASTLOAD
  91.  a great deal.  We agree with Roy in
  92.  that FASTLOAD is a fantastic product,
  93.  but we have found what can be a
  94.  problem.  It does not allow you to
  95.  change the default device number.
  96.  Therefore, if you have two drives,
  97.  you can not access your second drive
  98.  with FASTLOAD. The DOS WEDGE allows
  99.  you to chage device numbers with a
  100.  @#X where X is the new device number.
  101.  We have also found that FASTLOAD does
  102.  not work with a few programs.  Among
  103.  these are BLITZ! BASIC COMPILER, and
  104.  a utility program called TINY AID.
  105.  We have also found that FASTLOAD does
  106.  NOT work with an MSD-SD2.  We do not
  107.  know if it will work with a single
  108.  drive MSD.
