- LIFE simulates the growth and decay
-
- cycle of organisms. Processes like
-
- this are done to predict the growth
-
- of bacteria and the like in labratory
-
- experiments. The concept was
-
- developed by John Horton Conway at the
-
- University of Cambridge. The rules
-
- of the simulation are very simple:
-
-
- 1. Any organism surrounded by two
- or three neighbors survives.
-
- 2. Four or more neighbors spells
- death for an organism due to
- overpopulation.
-
- 3. No neighbors or only one also
- spells death due to isolation.
-
- 4. An empty 'cell' with exactly
- three neighbors will have an
- organism born into it.
-
- Based upon these rules, very complex
-
- colonies of organisms can be created.
-
- Some patterns repeat while some die
-
- very quickly.
-
- There are two versions of this
-
- program. The first version creates
-
- random starting patterns. This
-
- version, even though it is random, can
-
- create some very complex and beautiful
-
- patterns. The second version allows
-
- you to input your own starting
-
- pattern. After the screen is cleared,
-
- you may move the flashing circle
-
- around on the screen with the cursor
-
- keys. When you want to place a live
-
- organism, press the asterik (*) key.
-
- To erase an organism, press the
-
- space bar while on that 'cell'. To
-
- begin the growth (or death) process,
-
- simply press the return key. To stop
-
- the process, press the RUN/STOP key.
-
- To start over after stopping, simply
-
- type RUN <return>.
-
- As stated, there are two versions of
-
- this program. When you select the
-
- RUN option, you will given a choice to
-
- run either version or return to
-
- LOADSTAR.
-
- ** NOTE **
-
- Because of the nature of these two
-
- programs, they do not connect back to
-
- LOADSTAR. Please be sure you want to
-
- RUN them before you do so.
